Ward, Allen wow ’em at track finale

One, a coronation. The other, a most pleasant surprise.

The Coupeville Middle School track and field team put a stamp on the 2024 season Wednesday at day two of the Cascade League Championships in Lakewood, winning two individual titles.

The first, a triumph in the 100 from Tamsin Ward, was a thunderous uppercut.

It gave the Wolf 7th grader her second league title of the season, following a win in the shot-put last week, and her 12th victory of this campaign.

That pushes Ward one win ahead of the 11 she nailed down as a 6th grader and ties her with future high school state champ Alex Murdy for the second-best performance by a CMS athlete since 2008.

Only Lindsey Roberts, with 18 wins in 2015, tops the duo, and both she and Murdy did their winning work as 8th graders.

And why 2008? That’s as far back as athletic.net has CMS track marks recorded.

Wednesday’s second title was a bit more of a surprise, as 6th grader Zariyah Allen made them bow down in the discus.

Chucking the implement a stunning 15 feet further than her previous PR, she captured her second-ever win as a CMS track supernova and did it on the season’s biggest stage.

“Zariyah’s second throw was perfect,” said Wolf coach Jon Gabelein.

“While I knew it was much farther than she has ever thrown before, she was surprised that the official confirmed the measurement.

“Passing her previous record by 15 feet is amazing.”

Wednesday’s rumble, a seven-team showdown, finished with South Whidbey winning both girls team crowns, while King’s (6th/7th) and Lakewood (8th) split the boys titles.

Coupeville might not have had the depth to topple their bigger-school rivals in the team standings, but, to an athlete, they impressed their coaches.

“Throughout our season, students were able to see how strong efforts turn into even stronger abilities,” Gabelein said.

Wolves push hard for finish line

The odyssey begins.

The middle school track and field meet that’s too big for just one day began Wednesday in Lakewood, as seven schools clashed in the opening round of the Cascade League Championships.

Day one featured a mix of prelims and finals, with Wolf 7th grader Tamsin Ward crowned as league shot put champ.

The victory was her 11th of the season, tying her with her performance as a 6th grader.

Ward and associates will have another chance to capture glory next Wednesday, May 29, when Cascade League competitors return to Lakewood to finish off the two-day season-closer.

With Coupeville halfway to the finish line, coaches Jon Gabelein and Amber Wyman are feeling good about what the Wolves have accomplished, and what’s still ahead.

“We had 63 students here today,” Gabelein said. “I am very proud of the work so many of our athletes have been doing throughout our season.

“The results of their hard work really showed up tonight!”

It’s been a season-long quest, and the young Wolves have made a solid commitment to growth and improvement.

“Students often hear me say that their great accomplishments are not because of luck or magic,” Gabelein said. “They are proof of their continued hard work and being willing to push themselves to be even better.”

Weak weather, strong performances

Back in double digits.

Coupeville 7th grader Tamsin Ward claimed three more wins Thursday during a three-team middle school track and field meet in Langley.

Coming out on top in the 100 and shot put, while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 200 relay squad, the young Wolf reached 10 victories on the season.

That leaves Ward one off her pace from last season, when she debuted with 11 wins.

The two CMS teammates closest to her in claiming gold medals are 8th grader Beckett Green and 7th grader Brooklyn Pope, who both have won seven times this season.

Pope joined Ward, Elizabeth Marshall, and Emma Cushman on that 4 x 2 team Thursday, while also claiming an individual title in the high jump.

Green seized the day in the 200, with fellow Wolf 8th graders Johnathan Jacobsen (High Jump) and Roger Merino-Martinez (Long Jump) rounding out Coupeville’s winners.

Host South Whidbey won the girls team titles, while King’s claimed the boys’ crowns.

The day played out in less-than-spectacular conditions, but the Wolves held up well.

“Despite some rainy and cold weather, the middle school athletes had a successful last regular season meet!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman.

“Our athletes gave it their all! We are very proud of their accomplishments and are looking forward to seeing what they can do in their final two meets at Lakewood.”

Those meets comprise the Cascade League Championships, with prelims set for May 22 and finals for May 29.

The sun was shining, the PRs were popping, and the rivalry was raging.

Coupeville Middle School welcomed next-door neighbor South Whidbey to Cow Town Wednesday, with athletes from the two schools lighting up the oval.

While the Falcons finished atop the team standings, the Wolves held up well against the powerhouse Falcons, claiming 11 wins.

Eighth grader Beckett Green topped CMS, claiming victory in the 100 and 200, while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 100 relay squad.

Joining him as dual winners were 7th grade supernovas Brooklyn Pope (High Jump, Long Jump) and Tamsin Ward (100, Shot Put).

Ward, who claimed 11 victories in her middle school track debut a year ago, has a team-high seven wins through the first three meets this season, all in individual events.

With two relay wins and four individual titles so far this time around, Green is hot on her heels, while Pope has racked up five wins in her first season of track.

Along with the wins, Coupeville collected 88 PRs Wednesday.

“Our athletes have been working hard to sharpen their skills and reach even higher speeds,” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“Extra efforts allowed many of them to enjoy earning impressive PR’s tonight!

“With our season already at the halfway point, we look forward to helping them stay focused and moving forward so they can achieve even more during the coming weeks.”

The Wolves get back at it next Thursday, May 16, when they travel to Langley for a rematch with South Whidbey.
