Soccer and science have become the best combo since chocolate and peanut butter.

Putting the student part squarely in student/athlete, four Coupeville High School soccer players captured gold at last weekend’s state Science Olympiad competition.

Guided by teacher Terry Welch, the quartet of Nick Dion, Connor McCormick, Sebastian Davis and Garrett Woody brought home the “Au.”

Dion and McCormick won for their work with the Scrambler, while Davis and Woody topped the field in the “Write It. Do It.” competition.

All four have also excelled on the field for the Wolves this season and return to action this afternoon, when the Wolves host Chimacum in an Olympic League showdown.

Play starts at 3:30.

It’s been a brutal start.

Three games into the season and the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad has faced a pair of 2A schools and a 1A state title contender.

Combined, their three foes went 45-13-2 last year and seem primed to make similar runs this season.

Toss in a handful of injuries — starting Wolf goalie Joel Walstad missed Saturday’s game, a 4-0 non-conference loss at Kingston — and the team’s 0-3 start is not terribly surprising.

But, there are bright spots, and promise that the season can turn around.

Backup goalie Connor McCormick played strongly in place of Walstad, limiting Kingston to just a goal in the first half.

Connor was AMAZING! The score may not reflect it, but holy cow!!!,” said exuberant Wolf soccer mom Janine Bundy. “Connor had Ninja reflexes!”

CHS coach Kyle Nelson, a bit more, shall we say, low-key, also felt his squad played well for at least part of the game.

“We had a pretty good first half, being down only 1-0,” Nelson said. “Our injuries and being short-handed because of guys not being able to make this game caught up to us in the second half.

“Hopefully we are through our toughest games of the season,” he added. “Though I really have very little info on our next opponent, Cascade Christian. So, we will see.”

It was a busy day Saturday.

Two Coupeville High School teams kicked off the spring sports season under surprisingly sunny skies, just a stone’s throw from each other.

While the Wolf baseball squad was dismantling visiting Blaine 10-0, the CHS boys’ soccer squad rumbled in a three-team jamboree with South Whidbey and Lake Stevens.

Camera in hand, proud mom Wendy McCormick documented the happenings on the pitch, and the photos above are courtesy her.

McCormick, rulin' the waves.

McCormick, rulin’ the waves.

Connor McCormick is a man of many sports.

The Coupeville High School junior, who played first doubles with teammate Loren Nelson in his team’s season-opening match at Archbishop Thomas Murphy, has tried his hand at many athletic endeavors.

He’s a goaltender for the Wolf boys’ soccer squad, has played little league baseball and middle school football and is an avid paintballer.

Tennis first drew his attention back in his days as a freshman because it offered a new challenge.

“This is my third year playing,” McCormick said. “I started because it was a different sport that I wanted to try.”

As he’s developed his game over the past three seasons, he’s found the sweet spot (“hitting a great shot that my opponent can’t return”), while continuing to work on his skills.

“I’m good volleying at the net, but my ground strokes need more top spin and my serve needs a little work,” McCormick said.

A member of Honor Society, he plans to join the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and take a stab at Science Club this year. He’s also a past veteran of History Day.

Whether he’s whacking backhands past opponents or excelling in the academic world, McCormick benefits from having a strong support crew.

Buoyed by their confidence, the world is his to conquer.

“My family and teammates have been very helpful and supportive on the court and off,” McCormick said. “I plan to do my best and win as many matches as I can.”

They’ve been athletic their entire lives.

Soccer sensation Erin Rosenkranz and her cousins, multi-talented Jake and Connor McCormick, have been involved in sports from the start.

In the early days, it was swim lessons together, as shown in the rare photo above.

These days Rosenkranz, who will be a senior at Coupeville High School in the fall, is a distance runner on the track team and a year-round star on the soccer pitch.

Her cousins play tennis, soccer, football, track and paintball and have made their own splashes in the world of Wolf athletics.

The family that plays together stays together — it applies not just to brothers and sisters, but cousins as well.
