Mollie Bailey, the future of Wolf sports, would like to know someone out there will be ordering all the varsity letters she’s going to earn in the coming years.

Who’s gonna step up?

We’ve just rolled out of one school year, and are several months away from a new one, but that doesn’t mean things are totally quiet behind the scenes.

As Wolf athletes graduate, some parents fall off and others with younger kids rise to take their place, and now is a good time to think about helping make Coupeville High School athletics a success.

The school’s Booster Club, which keeps things humming year-round, has begun looking for people to fill a list of small, but important jobs.

In recent weeks they have used their Facebook page to put out the call for people interested in:

**Running the 50/50 raffles at home CHS football and basketball games

**Taking photos at games

**Ordering varsity letters and bars for teams at the end of seasons

**Ordering roses for Senior Night festivities

**Working as a membership coordinator for the club

**Helping with the scholarship committee, which hands out awards to Wolf senior student/athletes

Whether you have a son or daughter at CHS, or are just in the mood to help out cause you’re nice like that, now is the ideal time to get in touch with the booster club.

Yes, right now.

You have six days to get your affairs in order.

When Wednesday, Jan. 21 rolls around, you’ll need to get off of work early — or just take the whole day off.

Chimacum is headed over to Whidbey for a basketball doubleheader that afternoon (boys’ varsity tips at 3:30, girls at 5:15, while JV goes in reverse order in the middle school gym across the hallway).

It’s the first time the Cowboys will travel to Coupeville for basketball, and both games will figure heavily in the battle for an Olympic League title.

The Coupeville Booster Club is trying to whip up an additional layer of intrigue by calling for a Black Out that night.

To see more about that, just scroll back up to the top photo. No point in me rehashing all that a second time.

I’ve got things to do. Like getting the day off.

Bob Martin, at work and rest.

Bob Martin, at work and rest.

Bob Martin is the unsung backbone of Coupeville sports.

Whether coaching football and basketball, working with the high school boosters or the Boys and Girls Club, volunteering for Race the Reserve road crew work or simply making sure the lights stay on and the PA system works in the CHS gym during games, he’s everywhere at once.

In a small town, you need people like Bob, who are willing to put a lot of time and work in for very little pay, to make things work.

He may not always be in the spotlight, which he seems quite happy about, but he is indispensable.

Plus, he upholds a proud tradition honored by myself and Wolf football coach Tony Maggio, among others, of wearing shorts almost 24-7-365, rain and/or snow be danged.

Good man.

So, on this, his birthday, take a moment to give a hand to the quiet man of Coupeville sports, the guy who helps keep everything running while building for the next generation.

There is a landmark that sits in front of the CHS gym — a rock that is spray painted every time someone has something to get off their chest.

When it comes to Wolf sports, from the pee wees to the big kids, Bob Martin is the real-life embodiment of that rock.

Just don’t go spray painting him any time soon…
