Wolves gallop in Granite

It’s becoming a familiar trip.

Traveling back to Granite Falls for the second time in five days, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad ran in the Granite Gallop Wednesday afternoon.

The trek followed on the heels of a jaunt Saturday to the same area for the Mountain Loop Invitational.

This time out, the Wolves were one of seven schools vying on a 1.7-mile course, seeking glory and PRs.

Coupeville’s boys finished second in the team standings, piling up 55 points to South Whidbey’s meet-best 31.

That put both Whidbey schools well ahead of King’s, which was third with 83 points.

Lakewood (118), Granite Falls (119), Sultan (155), and Northshore Christian Academy (156) rounded out the standings.

On the girl’s side of things, South Whidbey and Granite finished in a tie with 52 points, followed by Northshore (66), Coupeville (88), Lakewood (125), and Sultan (131).

Adeline Stevens and Jude Stadler of South Whidbey claimed individual crowns, while Wolf 8th grader Anna Powers continued her torrid fall, hitting the tape in second place.

Coupeville returns to action next Wednesday, Oct. 22, traveling to Langley for the season-concluding Cascade League Championships.

CHS harriers overcome weather, big school rivals

The Wolves ran with the big dogs.

Repping a small 2B school, the Coupeville High School cross country squad acquitted itself quite nicely Saturday in Granite Falls at the rain-soaked Mountain Loop Invitational, even with a field filled with large school rivals.

Paced by top finishers Mikayla Wagner, who set a “lifetime PR,” and George Spear, who “ran so fast I’m still dry,” the Wolves finished fifth in both team competitions at an event which drew runners from 20 high schools.

Oak Harbor, a 3A school, and Lake Stevens, a 4A one, captured team crowns in girls and boys, respectively, while competing on a 5,000-meter course.

On the boy’s side of things, the Wolves made a huge statement, finishing ahead of both their next-door neighbors from O-Town and Northwest 2B/1B League archrival Mount Vernon Christian.

Fresh off its top-notch performance in Granite, Coupeville next heads to Bellingham Thursday, Oct 16 for the Lake Lap Invite at Lake Padden.

Young guns, runnin’ through the rain

A little rain won’t slow them down.

Or even a lot of rain.

Running through the liquid sunshine in Granite Falls Saturday, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad put up a stellar team-wide performance at the 5th annual Mountain Loop Invitational.

The scrappy Wolves notched third place in both of the team competitions, with Cavelero Mid-High, out of Lake Stevens, claiming top honors.

In the individual standings, Coupeville collected four top 10 performances, with Anna Powers and Sarai Dangerfield finishing second and third, respectively, in the girls rumble.

While the weather made navigating the 1.7-mile course a bit difficult at times, the Wolves held up well.

“It has been raining the whole time!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman. “The runners did great! The hill was muddy and wet, so a few fell on it, but they pushed through and finished strong!”

Coupeville is headed back to Granite next week, slated to appear at the Granite Gallop Wednesday, Oct. 15. The weather forecast for that day calls for sun.

Harriers notch top times far from home

They spiced things up with a mid-week run.

Competing Wednesday at the San Juan Golf & Tennis Club on Friday Harbor, five high schools combined to send 63 cross country harriers across a 5,000-meter course, with some close races to boot.

Coupeville, the team you’re likely reading this story for, placed second in the boys’ team competition, narrowly edged out 34-37 by Mount Vernon Christian, while the Wolf girls earned a third-place finish behind MVC and Friday Harbor.

Overall, CHS placed six runners in the top 10, with four boys and two girls earning the distinction.

Not bad, considering the Wolves hopped off the ferry, had a brief warmup, then almost immediately hit the trail.

Senior George Spear and freshman Mikayla Wagner paced the Wolves, hitting the tape in second and third, respectively, while Mount Vernon’s Peyton Smith and Evangeline Fikkert claimed individual crowns.

For Spear, it was a milestone day as he broke the 18-minute barrier, something he’s been chasing.

“I am so happy for him!!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting. “He has worked so hard for this!”

It’s a two-event kind of week for Coupeville, which returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 11 at the 5th annual Mountain Loop Invitational in Granite Falls.
