1A. 2A. It matters not.

Crushing everyone from the other 10 Olympic League schools, Coupeville High School juniors Makana Stone and Dalton Martin emerged as league track and field champs Saturday.

Stone roared to a victory in the 400, and I do mean roared.

Coming down the backstretch she was in a battle with a runner from 2A Sequim, then put on the jets.

Photo man John Fisken, who was on the scene snapping pics, described it as the other girl vanishing from the photos as Stone flipped on the afterburners.

“It was a fun race to watch,” Fisken said. “She just left the other girl in the dust!”

Martin made a huge jump himself, launching his personal best throw in the discus by a good five feet to claim the top spot on the medal podium.

The league meet, held at North Kitsap High School, united the four 1A schools with their counterparts from 2A.

While the bigger schools, with their much deeper rosters, dominated the team scoring, Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, held its own against its closest rivals.

The Wolf girls finished ahead of 1A foes Chimacum, Port Townsend and Klahowya, while the boys tied with Klahowya and edged out Chimacum.

That strength should come into play next weekend when Coupeville travels to Bremerton for sub-districts.

That meet will feature just the four 1A schools, with the top three finishers in each event advancing to districts May 22-23.

A fourth-place finisher will also advance if their time/throw proves to better than the fifth place athlete at the Nisqually League meet.

“Nearly everyone on the team should qualify,” said Coupeville coach Randy King. “We hope for a big contingent!”

The top two in each event at districts goes to the state meet in Cheney May 29-30.

While Stone and Martin captured the spotlight Saturday, the girls relay teams and sophomore thrower Skyler Lawrence also made huge strides.

Both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay units (featuring quicksilver Sylvia Hurlburt, Lauren Grove, Marisa Etzell and Stone) posted season-best times and came dangerously close to busting school records.

All that, and Grove spent much of the day being seriously ill. Get her healthy and records will likely topple.

Lawrence launched her best discus throw of the year and “is on her way to reaching quite a bit further.”

It was a day for dominance, in many different ways.

Makana Stone and Dalton Martin were all about the wins, while Alexxis Otto carried the banner when it came to setting PRs Thursday as the Coupeville High School track squad competed at a five-team meet in Port Townsend.

Stone zipped to victories in the 200 and 400, then made it three-for-three by running a leg on a winning 4 x 200 relay squad that included Marisa Etzell, Lauren Grove and Kirsten Pelroy.

While she was running wild, Martin was throwin’ like a boss, taking top honors in both the shot put (where he set a PR) and discus.

While the five wins were the big story on the day, the 17 PR’s set by the Wolves (10 for the girls, seven for the boys) were just as impressive.

Otto paced Coupeville, smashing her own records in all three of her events (shot put, discus, javelin).

Lauren Bayne, Delaney Armstrong and Kenny Johnson set PRs in two events apiece.

The meet, the next-to-last of the regular season, brought league rivals Coupeville and Port Townsend together with 2A schools Olympic and North Mason and 1B Crescent.

Back up.

If you’re going to try and record Dalton Martin’s throws this season, you might want to get a little bit further out, as the Coupeville High School junior is starting to unleash his full power.

Nailing PRs in both the shot put and discus at a six-team meet at Kingston Thursday — he won the discus and finished second in the shot — Martin was the biggest Wolf star on the day.

He wasn’t the only winner, however, as the girls 4 x 200 relay team (Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt, Lauren Grove and Makana Stone) zipped to victory.

The same unit also finished second in the 4 x 100, while freshman Lauren Bayne finished second in the 1600.

Continuing his life-long trend of picking something up and immediately being a success at it, CHS junior Lathom Kelley hefted the javelin for the first time in competition, claiming second.

With their thin roster, the Wolves, reppin’ the smallest 1A school in the state, had little chance in the team competition, as 2A North Kitsap strolled to dual wins.

Kingston, also a 2A school, Coupeville’s 1A Olympic League rival, Port Townsend, and 1B Clallam Bay and Neah Bay rounded out the field.

It wasn’t his longest throw ever, but it had the biggest impact.

Launching the discus a season-best 114 feet, two inches Saturday at the Port Angeles Invitational, Wolf junior Dalton Martin captured the first win of his three-year CHS track career.

His exploits, besting an 11-man field at the 13-team meet, earned him the spotlight along side the girls’ 4 x 200 relay unit (Kirsten Pelroy, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone), which destroyed all foes in claiming their own title.

Led by the relay win, and several third-place finishes, the Coupeville girls finished sixth in the team standings.

They beat 2A Kingston, outpaced Olympic League rivals Klahowya and Port Townsend and had the best finish of any 1A school.

The Wolf boys, who have a thinner roster, finished ninth.

The meet drew six 2A schools, four 1A schools and three 1B schools for an afternoon of competition.
