Twin brothers DeAndre (left) and Dante Mitchell finished in a tie atop the poll to decide the Coupeville Sports “Winter Coach of the Season.”

Back in their younger days.

Well, there’s a first time for everything.

I’ve run 21 polls in the history of Coupeville Sports, and never had this happen.

But here we are, 48 hours and 25 minutes later (yes, I overslept…) and 2,248 votes down the road, and we have a TIE for the “Winter Sports Coach of the Season.”

Which is kind of appropriate, because the winners are twin brothers.

Just as mom Avis can’t pick a favorite (at least in public), the voters decided to honor both of her sons, Coupeville Middle School 8th grade basketball coaches Dante and DeAndre Mitchell.

The former Wolf players each picked up exactly 634 votes, putting them comfortably ahead of third-place finisher Scott Fox, who strolled in with 422 votes to claim third.

The Coupeville High School boys C-Team coach was followed by CMS coach Mikayla Elfrank (145) and CHS JV guru Chris Smith (113) in a field of 14 basketball coaches.

And they were all basketball coaches in this poll, as I accidentally left out CHS cheer coach BreAnna Boon and her husband Tyson, who is providing coaching for Coupeville’s lone wrestler, Alex Turner.

Thankfully, that duo have already won state and national titles back in their own high school days, so, missing out on a chance to vie for my totally made up, but totally amazing, non-trophy, probably won’t destroy their lives.

We hope.

For the rest of the coaches, and their various fan clubs, thanks for playing along and congrats to the Mitchell brothers.

If they want to break the tie, may I suggest a brisk game of HORSE down at the CHS gym?

The road came to an end Thursday for eight Wolves.

A playoff loss to visiting Bellevue Christian sent a senior-heavy Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad to the exit.

But not before they provided travelin’ photo man John Fisken one more chance to capture some snappy pics of them in action.

Coupeville had a rough go of it Tuesday night, running into a Port Townsend squad that played as close to flawless as you could imagine.

But that didn’t stop wanderin’ photo clicker John Fisken from snagging some epic shots of the Wolves hard at work.

Defense, first, last and always.

The first day of basketball practice brought a huge chunk of Wolf boys to the CHS gym Monday, and, once they were there, the early emphasis was on getting ready to defend.

The Wolves used pool noodles to work on posture, running through a defensive technique under the watchful eye of the Coupeville coaching staff and wanderin’ photo man John Fisken.

Looking to continue their upward climb — the Wolves won seven games last season, their best mark in four years — Coupeville has one sure thing in senior Wiley Hesselgrave.

After him, it’s a wide-open battle for positions, with a mix of returning players and promising newcomers, all dead set on being on the varsity roster come opening night.

Let the battle begin.

Avis Mitchell produces superstars.

Whether she’s working the sidelines as a coach, or raising her own children, the nicest hoops guru I know has a stellar track record.

And today marks one of her greatest accomplishments, the day she delivered twin titans into the world.

Coupeville High School seniors Dante and DeAndre Mitchell, who are a mere seven days away from returning for another run on the hardwood, are celebrating a joint birthday today.

Like a lot of twins, I can’t always tell them apart without basketball uniforms and a roster at my disposal.

Probably because I’m an idiot.

When we’re talking Coupeville twins and being able to tell who’s who, you range from stunningly easy (Joey/Skyy Lippo, for obvious reasons) to fairly easy (Lauren/Kayla Rose) to take a guess (Dante/DeAndre and Jake/Josh Lord) to no-way-in-heck (Ana/Ivy Luvera … four years and I never got it right).

But whether or not I always know which twin I’m looking at, they both score big in many ways.

Talented athletes, certainly, with the kind of free-flowing, air-walking game that big bro Anthony Bergeron brought to Wolf hoops before them.

But, also like Anthony, and like their mama, Dante and DeAndre class the joint up with their presence.

Smart, outgoing, well-liked by teammates, coaches and fans, they should make their mom proud.

As we head into a new hoops season, I hope they get a chance to have a big break-out in their final go-around, just like Anthony did as a Wolf senior.

It would be fitting for a duo who play with passion and a pedal-through-the-metal style.

Happy birthday, Dante and DeAndre, and all the best as you start dropping jumpers, and, perhaps, dunking like your brother.

The future is bright for both of you, and the present ain’t too bad, either.
