Julia Myers

July 23, 1997 everything changed.

A legend entered the world that day, one which couldn’t be fully appreciated at the moment.

It was only as Julia Myers, AKA Judy, or “Elbows” as I like to think of her, grew up, that the world began to fully realize what a hunk of pure, unfiltered awesomeness had popped out that day.

In my 25 years of covering sports on Whidbey Island, there have been a fair amount of dynamic athletes and a few transcendent ones.

Julia is one of the transcendent ones.

I’m not saying she’s the single most talented athlete I’ve ever seen, but she is resilient beyond belief, as tough as they come (while fiercely loyal and caring to her teammates) and has a spark, a light, that is hard to match.

It is not fair that her momma can’t be here to see the woman Julia has become, both as an athlete and a human being, but her heart would burst with pride.

Miss Myers, as much as any high school athlete I have covered on the beat, exudes a warmth and calmness of spirit that is unmatched.

If she reminds me of anyone, it is of former Wolf basketball star Jodi (Christensen) Crimmins, because both were supremely gentle, deeply caring friends to all off the court, and utter beasts on the hardwood.

Her left leg encased in a brace and all sorts of support gear — victim to horrifying soccer injuries that might have forever derailed a lesser athlete — Julia, like Jodi, played basketball with a beautiful, king-sized chip on her shoulder.

Myers eyes, so full of life and joy off the court, would flip over like a shark’s as she stepped on the court and go cold, black and deadly.

And it was freakin’ awesome to behold.

So often, young girls are told to be nice, to act like a lady, and on and on, and it sometimes stunts their growth as an athlete.

I hope every little girl in Coupeville had the chance to see Julia play, and is allowed to embrace her philosophy.

You can be supremely nice, considerate of others, a blessing to your family, friends and community. But you can also be proud of yourself, have confidence, play with passion and a rock-solid belief you deserve to win.

Julia, like Jodi, was not a dirty player. Ever.

But she never, ever, backed down. She attacked. She committed.

When she came off the floor, dropping subtle side-eye daggers at the ref who fouled her out, there was not an ounce of sweat or spirit left, because Julia never held back.

She was a player every young athlete, girl or boy, should emulate.

As she celebrates her birthday and prepares for the transition to college, all I really want to say to Julia is two words.

Thank you.

It has been a genuine pleasure to write about you, Miss Myers, and, since you’re wise beyond your youth, I hope you realize now, and not just down the road, what high regard we all have for you.

You’re a winner, Judy. Every day, in every way.

"And where do you think YOU'RE going?!?!?" Julia Myers prepares to disembowel

“Do my elbows taste minty fresh? Hope so, cause you’re gonna suck on ’em all game!!”

yep

“My work here is done.”

When Julia Myers goes off to college, her life is going to seem so quiet.

No photographers dogging her every camera-ready move.

No idiot sports writers writing essays about her legendary elbows and the way the skies crack with thunder ‘n lightning when she unleashes them on the basketball court.

Yep, it’ll be quiet.

Until then, enjoy the ride, Judy.

You are legend. And very, very entertaining.

Some people are star athletes. Others are good at taking photos. Only a few can do both. Kacie Kiel, American Badass, ladies and gentlemen. (John Fisken photos)

Now, one game into a season may be a little early to plan on hanging any new league championship banners in the Coupeville High School gym.

That being said, there are eight varsity teams playing basketball in the 1A Olympic League this winter, and only one still has a chance to go undefeated.

The Wolf girls’ hoops squad, courtesy of their 47-23 demolition of Island rival South Whidbey, are a shiny 1-0 heading into a home duel Friday night with Darrington.

The other seven squads? A combined 0-10.

The Coupeville boys as well as the Klahowya boys and girls are all 0-2, while the Chimacum and Port Townsend boys and girls are all 0-1.

The non-conference losses have ranged from a two-point defeat to a 30-point blowout, and they all are, as we said, non-conference.

League title banners will be decided when the four schools tussle with each other. Coupeville will play its new league mates three times apiece this season.

So, you can take the measured, calm, sage-like route and say, what will be, will be.

Or you can point to the CHS girls — rampaging force of nature Makana Stone, explosive dynamo Maddie Big Time, Kacie “Killer” Kiel, Julia “Elbows” Myers and Co. — and scream, “BEST IN THE FREAKIN’ LEAGUE, BABY!!”

Calm. Composed. Always…

Julia Myers, crackin' heads and takin' names.

Julia Myers, crackin’ heads and takin’ names.

OK, if you lean in real close and listen carefully, I’m going to tell you a secret.

You ready? Made peace with the universe and prepared to have your world rocked? Holding on tightly to the edge of the couch, in case the shock knocks you off the cushions?

Here we go…

Julia Myers is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Oh, I know, I know. Your brain just went poof and turned into liquid and ran out of your ear and is puddling down there on the carpet.

Your mom is gonna be so PISSED.

But now you’re saying to yourself, how can this be?

Cause you’ve seen Julia play basketball for Coupeville High School, elbows slicin’ and dicin’ like Ginsu as she hauled in boards, leaving people from King’s screaming and crying and blubbering.

And that’s just their whiny lil’ coach…

You’ve seen her drop epic stink eye on South Whidbey with just a glance. A glance that coated the court in ice and froze the Falcons in mid-stride.

Of course, if you were watching closely, you also saw Ms. Myers follow up those actions with a small, secret grin, content in the knowledge that she had just blown up the joint and thoroughly wrecked the concentration of any opponent hapless enough to cross her path.

Cause really, that’s the true Julia — one giant smile boppin’ through life to her own tune.

With her large, blended family at her back (OG cool cat and big sis Taylor Herreman taught her everything she needed to know about droppin’ the stink eye on morons), Myers is having fun when she plays, whether it’s soccer, basketball or tennis.

The fact she’s able to have fun is great, because she’s a tough lil’ bugger who refused to let a shredded knee slow her down. She had to sit out sports during her sophomore year, but she came roaring right back as a junior last year.

I hope her senior year is as awesome as she is, and plays out exactly to her hopes and dreams. Julia deserves that much.

Oh, and her birthday, which just happens to be today? May that be splendiferous as well.

Just don’t get between her and any birthday cake. Cause she’s not afraid to swing an elbow or two.
