The Coupeville High School freshman tallied her first bucket as a high school hoops star Saturday, providing the biggest bright spot during a long, somewhat rough afternoon for the JV girls basketball squad.

Stung by a slow start, the Wolves fell 38-16 at Forks, dropping their record to 2-3 in non-conference play.

Coupeville’s young guns get some time to work on things, not playing again until the new year.

Next up for the JV girls is a home game Jan. 4 against Granite Falls.

Until then, Wolf coach Kassie O’Neil and her squad will try and rediscover their groove.

“We did not play our game (today),” O’Neil said. “Got a lot of work to do.

“But hopefully we can use these failures to propel us forward and learn from,” she added. “That’s really all we can do right now.”

Forks took control of the game early, jumping on Coupeville to the tune of 17-4 in the first quarter.

Things got better after that, with the Wolves battling their hosts to a 6-6 tie in the second frame and putting up a close fight in the fourth quarter.

But CHS also went scoreless in the third, and that eight-minute drought didn’t help matters.

Madison McMillan and Kierra Thayer paced the Wolves with six points apiece, with Zustiak and Kayla Arnold each adding a bucket.

Brynn Parker, Teagan Calkins, Bryley Gilbert, Skylar Parker, Reese Wilkinson, Jada Heaton, and Desi Ramirez-Vasquez also saw floor time for Coupeville.

The Spartans made a good stand, but still got chomped by the Wolves.

Riding a hot streak at the service stripe Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad polished off host Forks in straight sets, running its winning streak to three matches.

With the 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 non-conference victory, the Wolves improve to 5-1 heading into a major showdown next Thursday, Sept. 29 at La Conner.

Saturday’s rumble, coming after a long bus trip out to bat country, was a battle between two fairly evenly matched squads.

“Forks was good!” said Coupeville coach Ashley Menges. “We focused a lot on what we could control, and it worked out well for us.”

The spiker guru praised her entire team, offering a few extra props for a couple of standouts.

“We had a lot of service runs, especially from Grier (Mooney) and Teagan (Calkins), which we’ve been working hard on becoming a consistent service team,” Menges said.

Issabel (Johnson) did great working hard and filling in in the middle position, which we’re all so appreciative of.”

As the Wolves prep for the upcoming showdown with their biggest Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, Menges, like varsity coach Cory Whitmore, is working on making sure her players talk to each other while on the court.

“Our focus moving on is upping our communication throughout the entirety of the play,” she said. “As well as all the way through the game.”

Saturday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 12 digs, 2 aces
Teagan Calkins — 4 kills, 3 digs, 3 aces
Jada Heaton — 3 kills, 3 aces
Issabel Johnson — 2 kills
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 1 dig, 14 assists, 8 aces
Madison McMillan — 8 kills, 2 digs, 4 aces

This time, things broke their way.

Playing in a one-goal game for the third time in five tilts this season, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team came out on top Saturday at Forks.

Sparked by sophomore Ayden Wyman’s third goal of the year, and strong work in net by goalie Anna Myles, the Wolves edged the host Spartans 1-0.

The non-conference victory lifts Coupeville to 1-4 on the season.

Wyman, the lone Wolf to score this season, punched in her third goal of the campaign, and the seventh of her prep career, to make the difference.

She was set up by teammate Bryley Gilbert, who notched the assist.

Myles and her defenders clamped down from there, frustrating Forks in their efforts to find an equalizer.

“Lots of shots the second half,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “Thankfully we got one of them in to take the game.”

Coupeville returns home to face Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, Sept. 27.

It’s the first of three straight Northwest 2B/1B League contests for the Wolves and the nightcap in a pitch doubleheader.

Coupeville’s boys host defending state champ Orcas Island at 4 PM that day, followed by the girls game at 6 PM.

They went a long way to collect a milestone victory.

Enduring an all-day trek to the wilds of Forks Saturday, then surviving an epic first set, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad earned Cory Whitmore his 70th win as Wolf coach.

By the time they were done, the road-weary Wolves had a 30-28, 18-25, 25-13, 25-14 non-conference victory in hand, lifting their record to 4-2 on the season.

Now on a three-match winning streak, Coupeville gets some rest before travelling to La Conner Thursday, Sept. 29 to face off with the three-time defending 2B state champs.

That showdown is still in the future, though.

For now, Whitmore (70-32 at CHS) and Co. can marinate in the moment, and dream of taking a long nap when they get home.

“If you’re going to go out to Forks, you better leave with a win,” Whitmore said. “Very proud of the girls’ return to practice on Friday that then carried over to Saturday’s match.

“Our focus today was simply on communication and consistency of that communication,” he added. “This was a team win because everyone bought into that concept.”

Coupeville, which was coming off an epic five-set thriller against Orcas Island, where it had to rally from a deep deficit to grab the victory, played strongly in all facets at Forks.

“We served tough throughout; that allowed our defense to be on top of their offense,” Whitmore said.

“But our back row was especially scrappy today, digging up some hard driven balls but also chasing down digs to reset our offense.”

Three players came up with double-digit digs, paced by Alita Blouin going low for 25.

Lyla Stuurmans (12) and Ryanne Knoblich (11) chipped in as well, while Maddie Georges tallied eight, missing a triple-double by just two digs.

The senior setter filled up the stat sheet all day, doling out 26 assists and zinging 11 service aces.

Most of all, Whitmore came away pleased with the way his players talked on the floor, something which was missing at times against Orcas.

“They showed tenacity in each aspect of the team,” he said. “But even more so toward the goal of communicating with each other through the ups and down, and that was fun to watch.”

Saturday stats:

Alita Blouin — 25 digs, 1 assist, 5 aces
Mia Farris — 4 kills, 1 dig
Maddie Georges — 8 digs, 26 assists, 11 aces
Taygin Jump — 2 digs, 1 ace
Ryanne Knoblich — 5 kills, 11 digs, 1 assist, 2 aces
Madison McMillan — 1 dig, 3 aces
Grey Peabody — 10 kills, 1 block assist
Jill Prince — 5 kills
Lyla Stuurmans — 7 kills, 12 digs, 3 aces, 1 block assist

They’re a second-half team.

The Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team struggled putting points on the board early Saturday, before closing on a hot streak.

The Wolves outscored visiting Forks 10-6 in the fourth quarter, with four different players putting the ball in the net, during a 31-18 loss.

The non-conference defeat drops the JV to 0-2 on the season, and marks the final time the young Wolves will play in front of their home fans until 2022.

Coupeville’s varsity has a home game against Darrington next week, but the Loggers don’t have a JV.

After that, the Wolves hit the road for games at Orcas Island, Mount Vernon Christian, and South Whidbey, not playing in their own gym again until a Jan. 4 tilt with La Conner.

Coupeville had the fan support Saturday, but Forks, after a long trip, came out on fire, jumping to a quick 12-3 lead after one quarter of play.

The Wolves clamped down on defense after that, but the rim was unforgiving to CHS, as the deficit slowly crept out to 17-5 at the half, and 25-8 through three quarters.

The final frame was different, however, with Madison McMillan, Katie Marti, Edie Bittner, and Skylar Parker all making the net pop for Coupeville.

McMillan finished with a game-high eight points, with six of those coming after halftime, while Marti banked in four points.

Parker (2), Bittner (2), Bryley Gilbert (1), and Mia Farris (1) also scored for Coupeville, with Jada Heaton, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, and Kayla Arnold also seeing floor time.
