The Wolves ran with the big dogs.

Repping a small 2B school, the Coupeville High School cross country squad acquitted itself quite nicely Saturday in Granite Falls at the rain-soaked Mountain Loop Invitational, even with a field filled with large school rivals.

Paced by top finishers Mikayla Wagner, who set a “lifetime PR,” and George Spear, who “ran so fast I’m still dry,” the Wolves finished fifth in both team competitions at an event which drew runners from 20 high schools.

Oak Harbor, a 3A school, and Lake Stevens, a 4A one, captured team crowns in girls and boys, respectively, while competing on a 5,000-meter course.

On the boy’s side of things, the Wolves made a huge statement, finishing ahead of both their next-door neighbors from O-Town and Northwest 2B/1B League archrival Mount Vernon Christian.

Fresh off its top-notch performance in Granite, Coupeville next heads to Bellingham Thursday, Oct 16 for the Lake Lap Invite at Lake Padden.

George Spear earns some more hardware.

It’s an all-day kind of thing.

Running with the big boys (and girls), Coupeville High School cross country runners spent Saturday immersed in their favorite fall sport.

The Wolf harriers hit the road at 5:30 AM and were just beginning to work their way back to Whidbey come dinner time after surviving the massive John Payne XC Invitational.

The mega-event attracted somewhere around 150 teams to University Place, with high school, middle school, and club runners mixing.

It made for a challenging experience, but that’s just the way CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting likes it.

“What a long day! But they all ran amazing!! Everyone got a PR!!” she said as the bus wheeled away from the meet site and headed in search of dinner.

Having thrived on the 5,000-meter course at the Payne Invitational, the Wolves will hit the trail hard next week, competing twice.

Coupeville travels to Friday Harbor on Wednesday, Oct. 8 for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet, then follows that up with a visit to Granite Falls three days later for the Mountain Loop Invitational.

The best-dressed cross country team in the land.

Also looking rather natty with their matching shorts.

They ran so fast the raindrops never hit them.

Dodging Mother Nature’s liquid assault Wednesday, the Coupeville High School cross country squad hosted its lone home meet of the season at picturesque Fort Casey State Park.

The Wolves and rivals from five other schools covered a 5,000-meter course, with Mount Vernon Christian and Evangel Christian snagging team titles in girls and boys, respectively.

Evangeline Fikkert of MVC and Joshua Sarr of Evangel earned top individual honors, with senior George Spear and freshman Mikayla Wagner pacing CHS.

While the weather got a bit wet ‘n wild, Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting was beaming like the sun afterwards.

“Beautiful day to set up; as soon as they started the race the skies opened up!” she said with a laugh. “IT POURED!!

“They all ran amazing! Such a beautiful course! Great PR’s! A memorable race for sure!”

The Wolves get right back at it this Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to University Place to take part in the John Payne XC Invitational.

It was a wild day.

Competing along with 40+ other schools at the Carl Westling Invitational Saturday in Langley, the Coupeville High School cross country team made some memories.

From George Spear becoming the first Wolf in recent memory to make it to the awards podium at the prestigious meet to Cyrus Sparacio completing the race minus a shoe, the trip down-Island was a memorable one.

Overall, CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting sent 17 runners to the line against prime competition.

Cyrus Sparacio cools down his tootsies after running most of a 3-mile race without a shoe.

Those harriers in action covered 5,000 meters across “a varied surface including forest trail, grass, gravel, and track surface.”

And Sparacio, a speedy freshman, covered most of that distance with a shoe on one foot, and just a sock on the other.

He lost his foot covering within the first half mile, but never slowed down.

“He tried quickly tying it, kept running, did not do a good job and it flew off but he kept on going,” Bitting said with a laugh. “He ran a decent time on top of it!!”

Coupeville’s runners (and their shoes, hopefully) will get back at it this coming Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Orcas Island for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet.

Coupeville’s girls move out as a pack.

They outran the dying light.

Competing in one of the few cross country events to take place in the late afternoon and evening, Coupeville High School harriers recorded strong times Saturday in Marysville.

The event was the 16th annual Twilight XC Invitational, which drew 90 teams from four states, and a bunch of unattached runners, to the Cedarcrest Golf Course.

“It was a great invite,” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “So glad we were finally able to make it!

“In the past Homecoming has conflicted with it, but not this year!”

There were 10 races, with the first one starting at 2:45 PM and the final one not sending runners flying until 7:00.

Hence, the name of the meet.

Coupeville sent 17 runners to the line, with all six varsity boys cracking 20 minutes on the 5,000-meter course.

The sub-20 minute club.

Sophomore Noelle Western had the top Wolf finish, claiming 53rd in a field of 267 in her royal rumble.

“They all ran amazing!” Bitting said.

“I know I always say I am proud of them, but I really, really am.

“All their hard work they are putting in is coming to fruition.”

The Wolves head back to practice with the start of the school week, returning to competition next Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Arlington for the Hole in the Wall XC Invitational.
