Angie Ireland

One of Coupeville’s best and brightest young business owners is in need of support from her community.

Angie Ireland, who owns and operates Prairie Perks in the parking lot next to the former bowling alley in Coupeville, suffered a broken leg and had to have surgery.

This has knocked her out of commission and made it hard to keep her business operating.

She’s missed three weeks of work, and doctors recommend another 3-6 weeks of down time.

Having hurt her other foot because of returning to work too soon before, and intestinal surgery in October, it has created great strain on Ireland.

“These last few weeks have been extremely difficult on my mental health, especially,” Ireland wrote on a GoFundMe she has recently launched.

“I hate having to ask for help, but I’ve learned that sometimes I just have to.

“Luckily my recovery is going well, bones are healing, pain is low, but I am absolutely struggling.”

Ireland, who began as an employee at Prairie Perks before becoming the owner, is held in high esteem by her regular customers.

“She is one of the kindest business owners,” said Michelle Cernick, who owns Whidbey Pest Control with husband Reese.

Angie has worked really hard to keep some of the best staff around. Everyone that works there is very nice.”

While the Cernicks are big fans of the coffee, smoothies, and frozen lemonade Ireland serves up, it’s her personal touch which resonates the most.

Angie always smiles and asks how my family is doing,” Michelle Cernick said. “Of course she loves our dog, Zoey. They have spoiled her rotten.”

On her GoFundMe, Ireland is very appreciative of all who have reached out to help keep her and Prairie Perks going.

“Thank you to the friends and customers who have dropped cards or gifts off at the coffee stand,” she said. “I appreciate you thinking of me and trying to keep me entertained while I’m stuck sitting.

“This money would help me pay my bills for the next month, keep food on the table, and give me a chance to rest without as much stress. If you’re able to donate, I appreciate it so much, I know times are tough on everyone.

“And if you want to think some positive thoughts and send them my way, I could sure use that too. I’m just ready to be back with my community, slinging some joe.”

The warrior of the wrestling mat needs our help.

Izzy LeVine, who grew up in Coupeville and now is an award-winning grappler in Arizona, has qualified for the world’s largest youth national tournament, which goes down this summer in Fargo, North Dakota.

It would be the second-straight trip to nationals for the Casteel High School sophomore.

LeVine is deeply committed to perfecting the dark arts of the wrestling mat, competing year-round in both folkstyle and freestyle.

A member of the Arizona National Team, she’s a state meet veteran and an All-American.

To get to Fargo, LeVine is currently raising money to cover the costs of training camps, travel, and team expenses.

She’s set up a GoFundMe, and for every donation of $20 or more, she’ll send you a WARRIOR bracelet, which “symbolizes the mindset needed to compete at a high level and reflects my Native heritage.”

Scott Dudley

Former Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley is currently in a life-or-death health battle.

According to a GoFundMe launched Friday by his family, he was “rushed to the hospital with a severe health crisis” three weeks ago.

“His condition was critical, and he was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, where he has been receiving round-the-clock medical care ever since.”

The family states that “doctors are cautiously optimistic about his progress, but the road ahead is long and complex.”

“As he battles through these difficult phases, we are faced with mounting medical bills and expenses that have added great financial strain to our family.”

The GoFundMe, which is set at $50,000, has generated $2,490 in the first three hours.

Dudley, a US veteran who was always staunchly pro-Navy, was elected as Oak Harbor’s mayor in 2011 and served one term.

A former city councilman, he garnered 57% of the vote, defeating incumbent Jim Slowik.

His time in the big office was marked by many clashes with city council members and other leaders, guaranteeing big headlines and plenty of buzz.

Garth Batchelor (far left) was deeply committed to helping both his own children and their friends play sports. (Photos courtesy Jenny Dill)

There are Wolves, Falcons, and Wildcats, but ultimately, it’s one Whidbey for those involved in sports.

The unexpected death of Garth Batchelor Tuesday leaves a huge hole for the South Whidbey community, and I’m asking Wolf Nation, if possible, to join in helping them.

Batchelor, who along with his wife Olivia, grew up on the south end of the island, was an avid little league coach and athletic supporter.

All three of the couple’s children — Brent, Morgan, and Levi — are strong multi-sport athletes who provided great competition for Coupeville.

Even as I gently harassed Olivia during her own coaching days, imploring her to transfer her children to the middle part of Whidbey, they remained steadfast Falcons — something I respect.

Garth, Olivia, and their children.

This will be a very tough time for the family, beginning with the fact Garth was the primary source of income for the Batchelor’s.

If you have the ability to financially help, please consider doing so. If not, pass on info to others.

Together, we can help keep alive the idea of “One Whidbey,” a band of small-town folk standing together regardless of what school colors we wear.

Attacking each day with a winning attitude.

The kid is a righteous lil’ dude.

Samantha Wanek, who I used to work with, and Devin Prescott, who attended Coupeville schools like his siblings, are in need of our support.

I would ask Wolf Nation to consider helping out.

Samantha’s nine-year-old son, Ezra, who I met a couple of times when he was younger, is about to undergo open heart surgery.

He was a bright, outgoing kid, who reflected a lot of his mom’s best qualities, and recent photos show his winning personality shining through.

Open heart surgery is a tough journey for anyone, much less a young guy who is still in single digits.

As they go through the surgery, and the recovery period, Samantha, Devin, Ezra, and his siblings will need help with financial matters.
