Cassidy Kendall

A fundraiser is underway to help an Oak Harbor woman badly injured in a car/pedestrian accident New Year’s Eve.

Cassidy Kendall, 23, was struck by a car while crossing the street in Oregon December 31, and suffered life-threatening injuries.

She broke her ribs, femur, pelvis, and spine, and was put in a medically-induced coma.

In an update Wednesday, her sister, Bailey Pace, detailed what Kendall has faced in the first week of 2021.

The young woman has had multiple surgeries, with a rod inserted to brace her femur, which was broken at the hip joint.

Kendall also had screws, rods, and pins inserted into her neck during spinal surgery, which will limit her mobility in her neck.

After a third surgery to piece her pelvis back together, with plates, screws, and bolts inserted, she is on a ventilation machine.

One huge positive is Kendall is out of the coma, and is able to understand and respond to commands to do things such as wiggle her toes and squeeze hands.

It’s expected she will be in a wheelchair for a minimum of three months, and will need therapy to recover the ability to swallow and walk.

Her sister has started a GoFundMe to aid Kendall and her husband, Oak Wendler, during this time.

“Thank you for all your prayers, love, and help through all of this. We are so grateful for all your support,” Pace said. “Cassidy truly has touched the lives of so many!”

Former South Whidbey High School football coach Mark Hodson.

A Whidbey Island gridiron legend and his family are in need.

Mark Hodson, a South Whidbey High School social studies teacher, led the Falcon football program to great success through two tours of duty.

Sunday, he and his family returned from a day at the lake to find their Freeland home a complete loss after a fire.

The Hodson home on Spinnaker Drive was fully involved when firefighters from multiple departments arrived on scene.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS reported neighbors “were actively using garden hoses to help as much as possible.”

Firefighters from South and Central Whidbey stations used interior and exterior extinguishment tactics to keep the fire from spreading to nearby houses, but the Hodson home was a complete loss.

With the family gone, no one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Friends of the Hodson’s have set up a GoFundMe to help the family of six, which has been left with little more than the clothes on their backs.

Nevin (left) and Taylor Daniels.

A two-vehicle T-bone crash Monday right outside of Freeland claimed the life of a member of the South Whidbey High School Class of 2021.

Taylor Daniels, who played for the Falcon soccer team, was airlifted to Harborview, where he passed away.

Older brother Nevin Daniels was transported to Providence, where he is recovering. A pregnant passenger was taken to Whidbey Health for a precautionary evaluation.

The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 525 and Bush Point Road just after 5 PM.

Friends of the Daniels family have set up a GoFundMe to aid them.

“We know we can’t take this unimaginable pain away, but we can help take some of the financial burden away,” wrote organizer Holly Sharp-Hezel.

“This is a time when family and friends make the difference. Let’s come together and show these wonderful people how much we love them, how much we care and support them.

“Funeral costs should not be on their mind right now, especially when they have another son to take care of during his recovery.”

Coupeville’s lil’ miracle guy, Baby Owen, has grown from 1.5 to 4.5 pounds since birth. (Photo courtesy Leslie Improta)

One of Coupeville’s littlest heroes continues to fight, and we can help his progress.

Former CMS counselor Leslie Improta has been leading the charge to help out the Camatti family, whose son Owen was just 1.5 pounds at birth.

The lil’ guy is at the University of Washington’s Medical Hospital, and has packed on three more pounds thanks to great care.

Owen’s mother Carrie, who is staying with her son, has MS, and she and Owen’s father Charles can use all the support they can get during this time.

If you can help, checks made out to Charles Camatti can be mailed to Leslie Improta at 683 Power Road, Coupeville, WA 98239.

There is also a GoFundMe set up:

Central Whidbey softball sluggers (l to r) Madison McMillan, Allison Nastali, Chloe Marzocca, and Savina Wells celebrate another win.

Marzocca is a strikeout machine in the pitcher’s circle.

District championship in hand, it’s off to state. But first, confetti.

They are a hard-hittin’, slick-fieldin’, high-hard-cheddar-tossin’, league-title-winnin’ band of sluggers.

Thumping foes left and right, the Central Whidbey Little League Majors softball team has rolled to a 17-2 record, a District 11 title, and a berth at the state tourney.

Ranging in ages from 10-12, the 12 young women who make up the squad are both the present and the future of youth athletics in Coupeville.

And now we can help them achieve a piece of their dream.

The state tourney is held in Poulsbo from June 29 to July 7, and team moms have launched a GoFundMe to help raise money for food, travel, and lodgings.

All donations will be split evenly between the 12 families, with any extra going back to support Central Whidbey Little League.

If you’re wondering who you would be supporting, here’s an alphabetic look at the Hammerheads roster:

Brionna Blouin
Taylor Brotemarkle
Teagan Calkins
Mia Farris
Jada Heaton
Aleksia Jump
Katie Marti
Chloe Marzocca
Madison McMillan
Allison Nastali
Mayleen Weatherford
Savina Wells

Remember those names, because you’ll be seeing them many, many more times over the years.

So, whether you’ve got some loose change rattling around your couch cushions or some Bill Gates-style money just beggin’ to be used, consider helping a band of strong, smart, goal-orientated young women who are strong athletes, and better people.

It would be money well spent.
