The team of destiny is seizing its moment.

Sparked by a game-high 18 points from Makana Stone, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team drilled host Chimacum 46-22 Tuesday night, moving within sight of its first league title since 2002.

The victory, the team’s seventh in its last nine games, lifted the Wolves to 11-5 overall, 5-0 in Olympic League play.

Combined with Klahowya’s 44-43 loss to previously winless Port Townsend, it gives Coupeville a two-game lead with four to play.

Win Friday at home against Klahowya (3-2) and the Wolves clinch the title.

They would have a three-game lead with three to play and having already beaten the Eagles once, would own the tiebreaker.

Chimacum and Port Townsend are 1-4 and both have already lost twice to Coupeville.

The aggressive Wolves jumped all over their hosts Tuesday, rattling the Cowboys with pressure on their ball-handlers. Speeding up the game, Coupeville bolted out to a 15-2 lead after one quarter.

“Took control from the beginning,” Wolf coach David King said. “Solid defense and getting some easy buckets put us out front.”

Stone roared with a quick seven points in the first eight minutes, while three other teammates chipped in on the offensive explosion.

Madeline Strasburg arced in a dagger of a three-point bomb, while Julia Myers banged home another three points and Monica Vidoni dropped in a bucket of her own.

While Coupeville was hitting its shots, it was the defense that broke Chimacum’s spirit in the early going.

The Cowboys went the entire first half without a field goal, managing just a pair of free throws, as the Wolves rolled into the locker room up 25-2.

Stone dropped in another four points in the second quarter, while freshman point guard Mia Littlejohn broke off the best play in her team’s second run.

Mia had a steal midway through the period, took the ball up the middle and scored on a runner in the key,” King said. “Mia had a productive game. She had other opportunities to score, but didn’t get the ball to drop.

“She had a good defensive game, finished with three steals and a very nice block on a jump shot.”

With a large lead, the Wolves started to coast a bit in the second half, a trait which King would like to see them lose.

“Coming out of halftime, we seemed to be going through the motions and struggled,” he said. “We just didn’t play solid on both ends. Turnovers, and not making the basic play hurt us. We also stopped moving the ball on the offensive end.”

Coupeville picked it back up in the fourth, led by Hailey Hammer, who went for all eight of her points in the quarter.

While he was happy with the win, King would like to see his squad maintain its focus for 32 minutes.

“We need to tighten things up on both ends of the court,” he said. “We can’t continue to have these lapses during the game when we aren’t playing good defense, or our offense becomes predictable.

“I was pleased with our effort in the first half, but would have liked to see us bring that same energy in the second half.”

Coupeville controlled the boards to a 30-15 tune, with Stone snatching seven and Hammer hauling in six.

Myers (eight points), Strasburg (five points, four rebounds, two steals), Littlejohn (three points, three steals), Kacie Kiel (two points, two steals) and Wynter Thorne (four rebounds) all filled up the stat sheet, while Stone tossed in seven steals and two blocks to go with her team highs in points and rebounds.

It's always Hammer Time.

The many faces (and smiles) of Hailey Hammer.

At first, it seemed like Hailey Hammer would be living in a large shadow.

Not only was older brother Hunter six-foot-seven, but he combined basketball and track excellence with a camera-lovin’ personality few could hope to match.

But it was never quite as it seemed.

Because, when we look back at the last four years, it becomes very clear.

Hailey has projected a pretty dang big shadow of her own.

The female Wolf athletes who follow in her footsteps — many of whom she has taken a personal hand in mentoring — have an ideal to live up to now.

In Hailey Hammer they have that rarity, an athlete who was not merely a varsity player in three sports (volleyball, basketball and softball) from the first moments of her freshman year, but a player who was at the heart and core of every one of those teams.

The very definition of rock solid, Hammer has earned her keep every step of the way.

She is where she is today, and has been there for the past four years, not because of nepotism or favoritism, but because she works as hard as anyone who reps the red and black.

Whether she loves the sport (softball) or plays it to help her friends (basketball), Hailey puts a capitol E in effort. She sells out on every play but never sells out on her teammates.

She reminds me so much at times of Bessie Walstad, which is natural since the duo played two years together and have always been close friends.

Hailey, like Bessie, is so solid, so reliable, so matter-of-fact about how she goes about her work, that she may never fully be appreciated until she’s gone.

Others soar high for a second. Hammer flies along at the top day in, day out.

And, through it all, she has come to be almost as much of a natural ham as her brother.

While she has always been quieter than Hunter was, Hailey comes alive in front of the cameras these days. It’s so nice to see her allow her sunny personality to reach out not just to her close friends but also to everyone in the cheap seats.

In 24 years of covering high school sports, I have seen talented athletes waste their potential. I have seen marginal athletes play above their pay grade, achieving on pure grit and guts.

When you stumble across one like Hailey, who has talent and doesn’t shy away from embracing it, it’s a beautiful thing.

As she celebrates her birthday Wednesday, I just want to say “Thank you, Miss Hammer.”

Thank you for being yourself, a talented athlete and better person. Thank you for allowing us to go on this ride with you as you grew from a shy 9th grader into a confident senior.

There is more out there for you. I have no doubt we will see you play college softball.

But wherever you go, whatever you end up doing in the years ahead, in sports or life, thank you from a nation of your fans for these years.

Keep making that shadow bigger and bigger, Hailey.

We will always be behind you, cheering you on. Always.

McKenzie Bailey (John Fisken photos)

McKenzie Bailey is among the returning CHS players excited about a new season. (John Fisken photo)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

If you like basketball, that is. Cause if you’re more of a wrestler, swimmer or gymnast, Coupeville High School is not the school for you.

The Wolves spring from the smallest 1A school in the state and when it comes to winter sports, it’s hoops or start planning for spring.

Thankfully, a lot of CHS students do like basketball. Of course, we’ll see how many when the first day of practice kicks off Monday.

As we sit at this moment — we’ll call it Basketball Eve — let’s take a moment to check in with some of the players planning to lace up their high tops and start running lines.

Everything is fresh and new again and hopes and dreams run wild, tempered with the knowledge that every season is started off with at least a bit of conditioning.

Tiffany Briscoe (Sophomore):

With basketball starting I’m a mess of excitement and jitters.

I think everyone is going in with a really positive outlook for this season. We’re in a new league and it’s a new chance for us to build up a name for Coupeville basketball.

I personally can not wait for the season to start. I’m hoping we can build on all the teachings we went through in open gyms.

I want to make a big impact in this league. We have the potential, the determination, and right now I think it’s really about fine tuning those skills.

Under the coaching of the Kings, I know that they will lead us to that.

I’d really love to take a majority of these games this season. And I believe we can do it!

I am just so excited! Though, I have to say, I know I’ll be hobbling around for the first week due to killer sore muscles, lol.

Kacie Kiel (Senior):

Well, basketball is definitely going to change this culture this year; everyone dreams of going to state, but I can say we are going to state!

I hope to improve my game so others will do the same; we are such a tight-knit group of girls and we are going far!

Basketball is one of the greatest sports ever but it doesn’t start til we are in condition and that’s the only thing I fear this year.

McKenzie Bailey (Junior):

Monday is the day where a new season starts.

I’m so excited to see our team together again. We are a family and it shows when we are on the court.

I’m very excited to get this season underway and excited to be back in the game.

Yes, the conditioning is going to be very intense but anything to make us better will be great.

We are such a good team and I know that these seniors want to go out with a bang, and I want to make that happen for them. We all do.

We are in a new league and this is our chance to prove how great we are. We want to start at the top and stay at the top.

Hey, maybe even make it to state; anything is possible with this team because we have so much heart and passion for this game.

It’s going to be a great season!

Lauren Grove (Sophomore):

I can’t wait for the season to begin.

Of course the main goal is always to win games. Another goal of mine is for Coupeville girls basketball to pose a threat to the other schools.

With hard work and dedication I know that we can accomplish great things and have a very successful season.

The conditioning isn’t always fun, but it’s what makes us better.

With that being said, I encourage my teammates to give it their all and come ready to work hard everyday.

Madeline Strasburg (Senior):

Senior year basketball, where do I begin?

Well, first, I am so amazed at how fast everything has progressed and that it is already time to kick start basketball season again, for the last time.

Also, I could never ask for a better group of girls to spend my last season with.

My sophomore year, when the Kings took over the program, our motto was to change the culture; honestly, I believe that we have undoubtedly accomplished that goal, and even taken that challenge to the next level.

With continuing hard work and the hunger to succeed, I personally believe that our team is the next STATE bound group of athletes!

I am so amped to get back in the gym and play with my girls!

I said it already, but our team has an enormous potential, we just have to get in touch with it.

My excitement to dominate the floor and our new conference is practically overflowing. We just have to go after it!

Hailey Hammer (Senior):

My hopes for this season is to come as one and win of course!

Basketball is definitely not my favorite sport, hurting my ankle is always in the back of my head, which sucks.

I am both excited and not excited because I don’t always enjoy basketball because it’s not my sport, but I’m excited to play with my senior girls one last time.

Monica Vidoni (Senior):

My hopes for the season is that we will be first in our league.

We have a lot of potential this year with our returners and some new upcoming people; our team is very talented and I believe that we will go very far this season.

I am very excited for the season; I have been waiting since the season last year.

Julia Myers (Senior):

I’m looking forward to basketball season with the girls a ton this year!

We have so much potential and I’d like to see us go to state this year. I have a feeling this is the year!

Also, the Kings are awesome, and I’m looking forward to having them coach me one last time!
