Birthday boy Clay Reilly (with a cameo by big sis Amanda Fabrizi).

Clay Reilly, welcome to the big time.

The Coupeville High School junior has been kickin’ butt and taking names for three years now, as a football, basketball and baseball star, but this fall he moved to a lofty level.

One of the real bright spots during a somewhat dismal Wolf gridiron season, Reilly teamed with Hunter Smith to be lock-down defensive backs.

Teams scored a lot on the Wolves, but most of it came on the ground, as most other teams shied away from throwing into their coverage.

With Smith picking off a school-record seven passes, Reilly didn’t get as many balls to make plays on, but, when he did, he was highly effective.

He made off with his own interception, came within a fingertip of at least two others, and thoroughly discouraged opposing quarterbacks from trying to operate on his side of the field.

Perhaps better for Coupeville, however, was his emergence as the best punter in 1A.

The Wolves, who were working out the kinks in an offense featuring a host of young players, averaged nearly five punts a game.

Once Reilly took over the role midway through the season, his foot became Coupeville’s most dangerous weapon, as he piled up 1,156 yards on 34 kicks.

One of those exploded into the early evening sky, took a sharp bounce on his home turf and skidded to a rest some 70 yards later, giving his support crew plenty of time to haul tail down the field and keep the other team from even attempting to bring the ball back.

In a rough season for a still-developing squad, that punt was easily the most impressive play of the season.

Reilly being Reilly, he took off down the field after he let loose with the kick, wanting in on the tackle. He may be a punter, but he’s a hitter, first and foremost.

As he celebrates his 17th birthday today, the lil’ bro of former Wolf hoops star Amanda Fabrizi, is one of the best and brightest we have at CHS.

Will he return to basketball after taking a season off? Only time will tell.

Almost certainly Reilly will be back on the diamond in the spring, reclaiming his starting spot in the lineup.

He swung a wicked bat and displayed a laser arm as a sophomore, and, based on football, he has grown as an athlete.

As he celebrates his cake day, we want to wish him the best and thank him, for his refusal to quit, for his grit, for his willingness to pose for the camera, for the way he shines bright and reps Wolf Nation with class and style.

Happy birthday, Clay. Now go kick some more booty.

Avis Mitchell produces superstars.

Whether she’s working the sidelines as a coach, or raising her own children, the nicest hoops guru I know has a stellar track record.

And today marks one of her greatest accomplishments, the day she delivered twin titans into the world.

Coupeville High School seniors Dante and DeAndre Mitchell, who are a mere seven days away from returning for another run on the hardwood, are celebrating a joint birthday today.

Like a lot of twins, I can’t always tell them apart without basketball uniforms and a roster at my disposal.

Probably because I’m an idiot.

When we’re talking Coupeville twins and being able to tell who’s who, you range from stunningly easy (Joey/Skyy Lippo, for obvious reasons) to fairly easy (Lauren/Kayla Rose) to take a guess (Dante/DeAndre and Jake/Josh Lord) to no-way-in-heck (Ana/Ivy Luvera … four years and I never got it right).

But whether or not I always know which twin I’m looking at, they both score big in many ways.

Talented athletes, certainly, with the kind of free-flowing, air-walking game that big bro Anthony Bergeron brought to Wolf hoops before them.

But, also like Anthony, and like their mama, Dante and DeAndre class the joint up with their presence.

Smart, outgoing, well-liked by teammates, coaches and fans, they should make their mom proud.

As we head into a new hoops season, I hope they get a chance to have a big break-out in their final go-around, just like Anthony did as a Wolf senior.

It would be fitting for a duo who play with passion and a pedal-through-the-metal style.

Happy birthday, Dante and DeAndre, and all the best as you start dropping jumpers, and, perhaps, dunking like your brother.

The future is bright for both of you, and the present ain’t too bad, either.

Birthday mates Amy King (left) and Kirsten Pelroy.

Birthday mates Amy King (left) and Kirsten Pelroy.

They are legends in their fields.

One’s a quicksilver track and soccer star who, at least according to the buzz from her fan club, may want to dip into some mixed martial arts action.

The other is half of a husband-and-wife coaching dynasty that is revolutionizing the biz, the gold standard when it comes to reporting game and behind-the-scenes action.

Heck, she’s even promised to give me a game recap in poem form at some point.

And now, today, the duo share a birthday, separated by a few years but united by a town, a school and the sheer radiance of their awesomeness.

Kirsten Pelroy (the possible future Ronda Rousey) and Amy King (the Robert Frost of Cow Town) are two of the best Coupeville can claim, and we want to wish both of them the happiest of cake days.

Pelroy, lil’ sis to former CHS supernova Mitch Pelroy, has been a bright, shining star in her own right.

One of the quickest Wolves on two feet, she has sparkled on the soccer pitch, the track oval and as a cheerleader, forever living up to her own description of herself — as an “Energizer Rabbit.”

Her skills go way beyond mere athletics, however.

A whip-smart, truck-drivin’, multi-hair-colored-rockin’ whirlwind of fun ‘n sun, she has style for days and her epic smile reaches the field a good two feet before she does.

Wherever she goes in life, whatever she does, I have no doubt Kirsten will kick some fanny along the way, making friends with everyone she meets.

If you want to know who she really is, all you have to do is listen to this second-hand tale from her soccer Senior Night.

Dawn Hesselgrave, mom to Wolf booters Kalia and Mia Littlejohn, and one of the loudest bleacher supporters of Pelroy, smiled and said, “You know what Kirsten wanted for Senior Night? To get a hug from everyone on her team.”

Cue a mob scene down below, as Pelroy’s entire 20-woman team mobbed her in a group hug, Kirsten disappearing into the middle of the giggling, grinning mass before emerging looking like she had won the lottery.

In reality, it’s us, her fans and those who have watched her compete and light up the universe on a daily basis, who really won.

And I could say the same about King.

One of the best coaches I have worked with, she accomplishes amazing things by being a mom to her players — firm and instructive when need be, nurturing and a good listener when required and warm and caring always.

Regardless of the sport (volleyball, basketball or softball) Amy rides that fine line between making sure every one of her girls enjoys — truly, deeply enjoys — their season, while also making sure they emerge as better players and more confident young women.

She takes talented players and helps to shape them into stars, and she takes bench players and gives them memories which will last forever.

There is joy in seeing one young woman take over a game, torching their opponents from buzzer to buzzer, but there is also joy in seeing a different young woman finally put everything together and score the only basket of their high school career.

King knows that both moments are huge milestones, and she treats both with respect and joy, and her players respond in kind.

As these two very talented women mark their big day on the calendar, we just want to take a moment to make sure both know how appreciated they are.

Coupeville is a better place for having Amy King and Kirsten Pelroy as two of our own, and I hope both of you have the birthday celebration you deserve.

Jordan Ford (John Fisken photo)

Tip your hat to Cow Town royalty.

The latest edition in a long-running legacy of excellence has his cake day today, so we all need to take a moment to wish a happy birthday to Jordan Ford.

#88, who can usually be seen on Friday nights blowing up opposing runners and making off with fumble recoveries, has been a huge positive addition to the Wolf football squad.

He’s been a huge positive edition to the whole school and town, for that matter.

And, while it would have been great to have gotten him back sooner, Coupeville fans will enjoy the year we’ll get.

A talented athlete, and a guy who just seems like a good, positive dude in all ways, Jordan is the heir to an impressive legacy.

Throw a rock (and not very hard) and you’ll hit someone in his family, and they all were stellar athletes during their time in the red and black.

His parents, David and Barbi, united the Fords and Messners, two families with long, hallowed traditions, and his bloodline includes everyone from Breeanna Messner to Aimee Bishop to Santa Claus (Paul Messner) himself.

It’s always great when Coupeville gets lucky and picks up a talented athlete, instead of losing another one. When they’re also a quality person, so much the better.

But it’s special when that athlete returns to the home of his forefathers to write another chapter in his family’s novel-length book.

Welcome home, Jordan, and happy birthday from all of us.

Sophie

Sophie Sandahl, rockin’ her new CHS soccer jacket. (John Fisken photo)

I don’t know if you know this, but it’s national Sophie Sandahl Day.

It’s true.

The Wolf freshman, a recent transplant to The Rock, hits the big 1-5 today and people are going bonkers.

To celebrate, Sandahl and her teammates on the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad will be hosting the defending 1A state champs today.

The game pits the Wolves (1-0 in Olympic League play, 3-4-3 overall) against Klahowya (1-0, 7-3-1), kickoff is 11 AM at Mickey Clark Field, and the stands are waiting to be crammed for this battle for sole possession of first place.

Your attendance is mandatory, especially since it lands on the birthday of a former South Carolina belle like Sandahl.

In her short time here, Sophie has sparkled with a quiet charm, while making big strides on the soccer pitch.

Let her know how much Wolf Nation appreciates her entry into our world.

Cram the stands. Support the booters as they go for the upset of the year.

And, most importantly, on your way in or out, or all game long, make sure #19 feels the cake day love.

Happy birthday, Sophie!
