Ema Smith doesn’t come to the party. Ema Smith IS the party.

The eternally bubbly Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, is one of the most entertaining student/athletes in Wolf Nation.

One of the most genuinely good-natured, friendly, warm people you are likely to meet, Smith is a delight.

She’s also a pretty darn good athlete, regardless of the sport.

From soccer to basketball to softball, when she’s been healthy, Ema is front and center.

A scrapper who’s willing to pound on a rival in pursuit of the ball, before coming back to giggle on the bench with her teammates, she’s packed with energy and ready to rumble.

In the relatively short time she and her family have graced Coupeville, she (and they) have settled in nicely, and it’s hard to remember a time when Ema wasn’t lighting up the prairie.

On the court or field, she busts her tail, even when she has had to work through wearing a knee brace while recovering from injury.

Away from the arena, she is witty and warm, highly intelligent and gracious to those around her.

And topping it all off is Smith’s willingness, nay, her burning desire, to be a true queen of having her photo taken.

For a blog that sees its numbers spike thanks to photos, especially those behind-the-scenes shots which allow the Wolves to show off their personalities, Ema is invaluable.

As she celebrates her cake day today, I just want to say thank you.

Thank you, Ema, for being kind and caring, for loving the spotlight but loving your teammates and friends more, for playing with passion and heart, for staying true to the way your parents, Charlie and Tammy, have raised you and your sister, Ciara.

You are a truly special young woman and our town and our school hit the jackpot when you and your family moved here.

I hope your 16th birthday is a special one, but more importantly, I hope you realize how appreciated you are by all those around you.

Stay amazing, Ema.

Some people are just more likable than others.

Coupeville High School freshman Megan Thorn, who celebrates a birthday today, falls firmly into the category of those who bring a special light into the world.

Owner of a big brain, and a scrappy competitor on the athletic stage, she is, overwhelmingly, just a really nice person.

Megan, like mom Gretchen, has a genuine sweetness to her soul.

If you don’t like her, there’s something wrong with you. Seriously wrong.

When it comes to sports, the younger Thorn might not be the tallest, or the strongest, but her heart is three times the expected size.

Whether competing in track, basketball or soccer (where she was just named Most Improved during her freshman season), Megan never backs down or gives less than her best.

Her best moments as an athlete, though, have probably come in the world of horse riding, where she follows in the footsteps of fellow Wolves like Ally Roberts and Ashley Menges in being a highly-accomplished equestrian.

Whether she’s collecting ribbons (all the ribbons!) or meshing her talents with teammates in school sports, Thorn is a winner.

Who just happens to be one of the nicest people you will ever bump into.

It’s not hard to root for Megan, and it’s even easier to pay tribute to her.

So, happy birthday, Miss Thorn, and may it be a day worthy of you.

Clay Reilly (John Fisken photos)

Reilly and Kiara Burdge

Reilly and Kiara Burdge are sitting pretty as CHS Homecoming King and Queen.

Clay Reilly is his own man.

Over the course of Coupeville Sports existence, I’ve seen him go from “Amanda Fabrizi’s lil’ brother” to a team leader and multi-sport star in his own right.

As the CHS senior hits a birthday today, we honor him for his own accomplishments — and they are many — more than his family connections.

Over the years, Reilly has emerged as a fearsome two-way warrior on the gridiron, an electrifying baseball player who was key to a league title, and, if we dream for a moment, an accomplished basketball player who could return to the sport for a swan song.

We won’t know until Monday if Clay decides to return to the hard-court — a place the undermanned Wolves desperately need his skills — but we’ve already seen his final run on the football field.

Reilly has been a superb defensive back, capable of dropping back into coverage or shooting up-field and lighting up rivals before they have a chance to do much damage.

As a senior, he also became a bigger part of the offense, finishing second on the team in rushing.

Towering over it all, however, might be his use of his leg.

As a punter, and later, a kicker, Reilly cranked the ball on a regular basis, often earning oohs and ahs from folks in rival press boxes.

During his junior season, when Coupeville struggled mightily to get any kind of offensive flow going, Reilly’s punts were the Wolves most effective (and frequently used) weapon.

One went 70 yards, and it was a true, airborne 70 yards, not a pooch that hit the turf and skipped backwards.

That work continued into his senior year, though, with a far more effective offense, CHS didn’t punt as often this year.

Which allowed Reilly to show off his leg on PATs, where he was arguably the most consistent, feared kicker in the league.

When we get to spring (after a successful return to basketball?), Clay is expected back on the baseball diamond for one final go-round.

A solid hitter who also packs an arm capable of repeatedly gunning down wayward runners who try to pick up extra bases on hits to the outfield, Reilly was a key member of last year’s league title winning squad.

Away from the action, our birthday boy continues to bring a lot to the table.

Smart, outgoing, friendly, he has always seemed, at his core, like just a good guy.

He has retained all the best attributes of his sister, one of my personal favorite Wolf student/athletes, and put his own unique spin on things.

As he goes forward to write the rest of his high school story, and beyond, we just want to take a moment to wish him the best.

Happy birthday, Clay.

The many talents of Claire Mietus. (John Fisken and Cheridan Eck photos)

A few of the many talents of Claire Mietus. (John Fisken and Cheridan Eck photos)

Claire Mietus will take over the world some day.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, hops from one activity to another and excels at all of them.

A fixture on the Wolf sports scene — where she helps anchor the cheer squad through football and basketball seasons — Mietus is lucky she can find time to pick up her pom poms.

She’s also (deep breath) the president of the Leo’s Club, a service organization, plays in the school’s jazz band, is an ASB officer for the Class of 2018 and competes in Science Olympiad.

Claire is a brilliant young woman, outgoing, friendly and deeply caring to those around her, someone who exudes a serene, inquisitive spirit.

It should come as little surprise that she aspires to be a world-changer, with plans to be a cardiovascular surgeon and work with Doctors Without Borders.

I have no doubt she’s well on her way to doing amazing things.

There are some people who you need to merely observe from a distance and you can tell they are destined for greatness, and Miss Mietus has always seemed to have that something extra.

As she celebrates her cake day, we, the fans, want to take a moment to wish her all the best and also to sing her praises for what she’s accomplished already (and everything still to come).

Happy birthday, Claire.

Go into each new moment knowing how much others think of you, and how much they respect your drive and compassion.

You’re a superstar, a bright, shining one, and it’s for all the right reasons.

Keep on amazing us, every day.

Amy King (John Fisken photos)

Amy King, guiding the future of Wolf sports. (John Fisken photos)

It’s good to be the King.

Every school needs a coach who is absolutely indispensable, willing to take on any and all jobs while showing a special skill at shaping young hearts and minds.

Here in Coupeville, that person is Amy King.

While her real world job (boo! boo!!) has taken her from a three-sport coach to a one-sport coach in the last year or two, she remains the gold standard.

Meshing perfectly with CHS girls basketball head coach David King (they’ve been an “item” for a few years now), Amy, the Wolf girls JV hoops guru, brings a mixture of passion, tough love and genuine caring to her duties.

Her teams, whether it be volleyball, softball or basketball, are always successful, both in terms of putting up winning records and turning out well-rounded athletes.

King has the X’s and O’s down solid, and has a real skill for taking concepts off the clipboard and showing her young charges how to make them work in real life.

But she goes far beyond that, taking on a mom role when needed, a butt kicker role when required and a PR agent role like few others.

Her game recaps from the road are unparalleled (though her husband is certainly in there fighting for the family and school crown) and she also wields a camera with nimble grace, capturing behind-the scene photos the paparazzi can’t nab.

A superb athlete herself back in the day, King has transitioned into the job of sage sports guru with ease, though, if I were to refer to her by that term in public, she’d roll her eyes so hard they’d never come back around.

While I’d like to see her quit her real job and go back to being a painfully-underpaid full-time coach (having a roof over your head is overrated…), I’m just super grateful for whatever slice of her time we get.

If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m gushing because today is King’s birthday.

Though what the heck, we could gush about her any day.

And I might if she follows through on her promise to one day write one of her basketball recaps as a poem.

Anyway, happy birthday, Coach King, and thank you from a grateful Wolf Nation.
