Hanging out with (l to r) daughter Ashlyn, wife Shannon, Jake and his #1 fan, Izzy LeVine.

It is the quote that will live forever.

And yes, after wife Shannon read said quote, Coupeville coach/living legend Chris Tumblin was not allowed to give out any more quotes.

But we’ll always have that moment when Tumblin described the play of Wolf football standout Josh Bayne thusly:

Josh had one tackle on a receiver, folded him in half like a cheap hooker who was punched in the gut by her pimp. He had to sit out for awhile and wait for his liver to start working again.

Memories…

Of course, there’s more to the man than just a way with words.

He’s also the only Central Whidbey coach in memory to have guided his team to a state title, beating the big city boys to win a little league title with a squad that included future Wolf stars like Ben Etzell, Jake Tumblin and Morgan Payne.

And today is his birthday. The day the original Rumblin’ Tumblin hit the ground running and never looked back.

Happy birthday, Chris!

You are, and have always been, a straight shooter who said exactly what was on his mind and a talented coach who got the most out of his players.

Of course, you’re also a pretty dang good paramedic, as well.

Coupeville is lucky to have you.

Kiara Mercedes

Kiara Mercedes

All cheerleaders are energetic and full of life.

If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be cheerleaders. It would be too painful.

But, every so often, one will emerge who shines a little (OK, a lot) brighter, who gets her yells to reach a little further, who seems to glow with cheer spirit at all times.

Such a young woman is Coupeville High School sophomore Kiara Mercedes, who celebrates a birthday today.

Younger sister of Wolf cheer captain Kylie Marie (also pretty dang outgoing herself), Kiara has been a vital part of the CHS cheer squad since day one.

As a freshman, she became the first 9th grader ever to be voted the Wolf Award by her teammates.

To top that for her second year on the sidelines, she got louder ‘n prouder (if that’s possible) and was pretty much a human sparkle machine during football games.

Kiara, like her sis, embraces being part of the cheer squad with fervor and there never seems to be a moment when she’s not enjoying herself out there.

And, if there is that moment, she hides it well. Never let them see you sweat, never let them know when you’re hurting.

But it goes beyond cheer.

She radiates a friendliness and warmth that can’t be faked and conducts herself with class and grace everywhere that you see her.

Her parents, Aaron and Trina Burdge, are raising four children who all seem whip-smart, well-adjusted, super-friendly and a lot of other adjectives.

Sincerely proud of their Mormon faith, but not overbearing about it, the family sets a strong example for all those around them.

Like most parents, the Burdges would probably would tell you they love all their children and don’t have a favorite.

So let’s say this.

With much respect to Kylie, who’s as awesome as they come, but is NOT celebrating a birthday today, on THIS day, Kiara gets our vote as the best of the bunch.

If most people are singles or doubles, she’s an out-of-the-park home run.

Happy birthday, Kiara. May your day be worthy of you.

Rhiannon Ellsworth

Rhiannon Ellsworth

Rhiannon Ellsworth never stopped learning.

Two years out of Coupeville High School, the former three-sport athlete is hard at work in the nursing field these days, giving back to others.

Having overcome a torn ACL during her high school days, she knows what it takes to overcome illness and injury, which, one would think, probably makes her more compassionate towards her charges.

Of course Rhi has always been an easy-going, super-friendly young woman, so the compassion was likely always there.

During her time as a Wolf, she was a cheerleader for three years, while also playing volleyball and basketball.

A gritty, hard-nosed player, she gave it her all, even when the injury slowed her down for a bit.

It was always nice to see her do well, to see her rewarded for the time, effort and sweat she put in. Now, as she prospers in life after high school, I hope she continues to always find success.

Life is not always easy, and Miss Ellsworth, like many of her friends, has been rocked by unexpected death ripping apart their community recently.

I hope you can find some peace, Rhi, and I hope the days ahead get easier.

Always keep your head up and know that through good times and bad times, your fans have always been impressed with the way you carry yourself.

You are classy, fairly sassy and greatly deserve happiness.

May today, and all your days going forward, be wonderful.

It's always Hammer Time.

The many faces (and smiles) of Hailey Hammer.

At first, it seemed like Hailey Hammer would be living in a large shadow.

Not only was older brother Hunter six-foot-seven, but he combined basketball and track excellence with a camera-lovin’ personality few could hope to match.

But it was never quite as it seemed.

Because, when we look back at the last four years, it becomes very clear.

Hailey has projected a pretty dang big shadow of her own.

The female Wolf athletes who follow in her footsteps — many of whom she has taken a personal hand in mentoring — have an ideal to live up to now.

In Hailey Hammer they have that rarity, an athlete who was not merely a varsity player in three sports (volleyball, basketball and softball) from the first moments of her freshman year, but a player who was at the heart and core of every one of those teams.

The very definition of rock solid, Hammer has earned her keep every step of the way.

She is where she is today, and has been there for the past four years, not because of nepotism or favoritism, but because she works as hard as anyone who reps the red and black.

Whether she loves the sport (softball) or plays it to help her friends (basketball), Hailey puts a capitol E in effort. She sells out on every play but never sells out on her teammates.

She reminds me so much at times of Bessie Walstad, which is natural since the duo played two years together and have always been close friends.

Hailey, like Bessie, is so solid, so reliable, so matter-of-fact about how she goes about her work, that she may never fully be appreciated until she’s gone.

Others soar high for a second. Hammer flies along at the top day in, day out.

And, through it all, she has come to be almost as much of a natural ham as her brother.

While she has always been quieter than Hunter was, Hailey comes alive in front of the cameras these days. It’s so nice to see her allow her sunny personality to reach out not just to her close friends but also to everyone in the cheap seats.

In 24 years of covering high school sports, I have seen talented athletes waste their potential. I have seen marginal athletes play above their pay grade, achieving on pure grit and guts.

When you stumble across one like Hailey, who has talent and doesn’t shy away from embracing it, it’s a beautiful thing.

As she celebrates her birthday Wednesday, I just want to say “Thank you, Miss Hammer.”

Thank you for being yourself, a talented athlete and better person. Thank you for allowing us to go on this ride with you as you grew from a shy 9th grader into a confident senior.

There is more out there for you. I have no doubt we will see you play college softball.

But wherever you go, whatever you end up doing in the years ahead, in sports or life, thank you from a nation of your fans for these years.

Keep making that shadow bigger and bigger, Hailey.

We will always be behind you, cheering you on. Always.

It's a birthday-a-palooza!!

Clockwise from upper left: Iris Ryckaert, Cameron Boyd (center), Christy Kellison (left), Fawn Gustafson (left), Gabe and Ty Eck, Jazmine Franklin, Noah Roehl, Caleb Valko.

OK, this is out of hand.

Nine birthdays covering three days, all with solid links to Wolf Nation. I already missed two, got three today and four more hit tomorrow.

Only one way to deal with this. I’m going Oprah on you all.

You get a Happy Birthday! And you get a happy birthday!! And on and on and on…

Who we are honoring (in alphabetic order):

Cameron Boyd — Wolf grad who sacrificed part of a tooth to help beat South Whidbey in a soccer game. A freakin’ CHS legend.

Gabe Eck — Fast-rising star who will hit CHS next fall. Football, basketball, baseball — does it all and does it all well.

Ty Eck — Just re-read what I said about his twin brother.

Jazmine Franklin — Sparkling Wolf cheerleader who doubles as a net master on the tennis court.

Fawn Gustafson — One of the moms who makes things hum behind the scenes.

Also gave CHS daughter Amanda Fabrizi, a hoops/volleyball superstar, son Clay Reilly, a three-sport terror and (one day) daughter Gwen Gustafson, who could be the greatest of them all.

Christy Kellison — Indispensable member of the Coupeville Booster Club and mom of Kole Kellison (and a bunch of others), who once tackled a ref in the end zone (on purpose). Still my favorite play ever. So there’s that.

Noah Roehl — Former Wolf star who grew up at CHS. Part of one of the families who are the very foundation of Wolf sports.

Just finished running another successful alumni basketball tourney in honor of his dad, the late, revered CHS coach Tom Roehl.

Iris Ryckaert — The Belgian Queen who hit Cow Town for a year and dazzled us all. Super sweet, bright young woman who dabbled in cheer, volleyball and tennis, spreading sunshine everywhere she went, before returning to rule her native land.

Forever a Wolf, regardless of where she lives.

Caleb Valko — The one true Page Hit King. The man who made Coupeville Sports what it is.

Cheeky bastard (and I mean that with a great deal of respect) who sometimes tries to play off what a good guy he is.

Too bad. Truth is out. Everyone knows you love your family and would go to the wall (and through it) for your friends.

A rock-solid athlete and team leader who left every last thing he had on the gridiron and basketball court, and a quality dude off of them.

To all nine of you, thank you for giving Wolf Nation a slice of your life. And may the next year be your best yet.
