Robin Cedillo: A ray of sunshine in the CHS sports world.

Robin Cedillo: A ray of sunshine in the CHS sports world.

I have never, ever seen Robin Cedillo without a smile.

The peppy, irrepressible Coupeville High School freshman, who celebrates her birthday today, has a grin that lights up the universe.

Whether anchoring the Wolf cheer squad through the fall and winter seasons, where she was joined by big sis Bella, or bouncing up and down in the dugout, bellowing support to her CHS softball teammates all the way to the state tourney, Cedillo is a freakin’ ray of sunshine everywhere she goes.

I can’t say that I know her all that well, but, in the time period that our paths have crossed, she has always come across as the real deal — a genuinely sweet, carefree young woman who gives her all always, whether playing or cheering for the red and black.

Through rain or sun, her smile never wavered. Never buckled. Never seemed forced.

Robin seems like one of those people who approaches each day determined to be as friendly, as outgoing, as embracing of life and their friends as possibe.

It’s a beautiful way to be.

I hope you have an astonishing birthday, Miss Cedillo. One worthy of the awesomeness that flows out of you on a daily basis.

Katie Smith and one of her favorite nephews.

Katie Smith and one of her favorite nephews, the never camera shy Abel.

Superstar to superstar — sisters Katie Smith (left) and Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil.

Katie Smith is prairie royalty.

Part of the Sherman clan, the Coupeville High School grad, who celebrates her 20th birthday today, has roots that run deep in this town.

Before she headed off to U-Dub, she was a standout athlete at every sport she tried. Softball, volleyball, basketball, track — you name it, she kicked your butt at it.

Little sister of one-time college hoops star Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil and big sis to current Wolf baseball stud Kurtis Smith, Katie kept the athletic flame of excellence burning for her family.

But there was more, much more.

She was, and is, class personified. Every day in every way.

I am deeply impressed with how she carried herself, and without going into the particulars, how she handled bad times as well as good times.

She took responsibility for her actions, she never wavered in standing up for what was right, and she was a shining star for the Wolves.

Katie may not be playing ball any more, but she remains that person who everyone should be proud to have had come out of Coupeville.

If you want to know what excellence looks like, what commitment and class sounds like, go no further. Katie Smith is all that and much, much more.

Happy birthday, Miss Smith. I hope you have a day worthy of you.

Emily Licence -- a slick-fieldin', cheer-screamin', delicious-cookie-bakin' sensation.

Emily Licence — a slick-fieldin’, cheer-screamin’, delicious-cookie-bakin’ sensation.

Emily Licence has had a pretty good freshman year.

A two-sport Coupeville High School star (cheer and softball), she solidified herself as one my favorites the day she helped kick-start Cookie Wars 2014 by bringing me home-made cookies after a softball game.

We could talk about her slick fielding at third base for the state tournament-bound Wolves.

Her coach, David King, compared her glove work after one game to that of former Major League Baseball great Omar Vizquel, and it’s true. She has a knack for coming up with the big play.

Or, we could discuss Emily’s bright, sunny personality, which shines through both as a Wolf cheerleader and when she crams the stands in support of her fellow CHS athletes.

But let’s admit the truth — they were really good cookies. And I am easily swayed by sugar.

So, today, as Emily celebrates her birthday, two days before she plays on the biggest stage of her still-young sports career, I wish her a really happy day and the best of luck.

You came in like a pro, Miss Licence, you carry yourself with grace and class and you know when to gently bribe the press. That’s impressive.

Never change, cause you’re already awesome.

Zane Bundy, the matinee idol of CHS soccer.

Zane Bundy, the matinee idol of CHS soccer.

Zane Bundy is the real deal.

He had a huge breakout season this year on the soccer pitch for Coupeville High School, popping goals (he was the second-leading scorer) and assisting on a ton more.

After seeing limited time as a freshman, he was electric as a sophomore, teaming with fellow tenth grader Abraham Leyva to herald the arrival of something CHS rarely had a season ago — offense.

Bundy lit up the net, helped carry Coupeville to a stunning win over South Whidbey and always looked good doing it, rockin’ the best kicks on the team.

It’s still kind of weird for me to see him stepping front and center as a star athlete, because my earliest memories of Zane, who celebrates his 16th birthday today, are of a little kid zooming around Videoville and David’s DVD Den, during my years behind the counter.

Now, he’s a stylishly-dressed two-sport athlete (tennis and soccer) and Homecoming royalty who boasts dance moves that rival the best of Jagger and Swayze.

Through it all, he has remained the same good-natured, super-friendly little dude (well, maybe not little, as he’s actually fairly tall now) he always was.

And you know what? Coupeville is lucky to have him, both as an athlete and as a first-class person.

Happy birthday, Mr. Bundy. The best is yet to come.

The woman, the myth, the legend ... Lexie Black. (John Fisken photo)

The woman, the myth, the legend … Lexie Black. (John Fisken photo)

The Black 'n Blue Sisters, Lexie (left) and Brittany Black.

The Black ‘n Blue Sisters, Lexie (left) and Brittany Black.

Superstar.

Superstar.

Some people are like rays of sunshine, sent into the world to fight against the darkness.

Lexie Black is one of those people.

A radiant burst of joy come to life, Miss Black, who celebrates her 27th birthday today, is one of my favorite people in the world. Without question or qualification.

I remember her as a young woman, slouched behind the counter at Videoville while we worked together, thumbing through fashion magazines and trying to pretend she wasn’t the tallest person in the room.

Already a dead-ringer for Milla Jovovich, even in her teens, Lexie was only missing one thing the “Resident Evil” star possessed — confidence.

But it arrived, maybe not in one day, but over time.

There was a moment when Lexie stepped onto a basketball court, snapped to her full height and realized she could, and would, kick unholy amounts of booty, Jovovich-style.

The queen of the blocked shot — she still holds the record with ten rejections in a single 1A girls’ state playoff game — Lexie was a beast on the hardwood.

She did it with hard work. With grit. With a refusal to ever back down, to ever look at an opposing team’s uniform and assume she had to lose because that uniform said ATM or King’s.

Lexie was graceful in both victory or defeat, but she was going to make damn sure either way you knew you had been in a war.

Running along side lil’ sis Brittany as half of the Black ‘n Blue Sisters, she helped spark the greatest sustained run in any sport in Coupeville High School history.

The duo would go on to play college hoops in Alaska — enduring a new home where their eyelashes would often freeze in the brief time it took to go from car to gym — and the awesomeness grew.

It’s not just sports, though. It’s in all aspects of her life.

I see Lexie today, standing tall and proud, full of joy, proof you can look like a super model, be a goofball and excel at everything you do and I see a lesson for every young female athlete who wears the red and black.

Be proud of yourself. Believe in yourself. Fight hard for what you want.

Know that when you lay it on the line every game and play your heart and soul out, that you will make lifelong fans, people who will be there to support you long after you stop playing.

And yes, she was probably rolling her eyes several paragraphs back, but face it, Lexie, we think the world of you.

You made this town proud. You made your family proud. You continue to make everyone who calls you a friend proud.

You are the best, Lexie, every day, in every way.
