“This really was an amazing season.”

Wednesday marked the end of the road for the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad, creating mixed feelings for coach Amber Wyman.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team!” she said.

“I’m sad that I won’t see these amazing athletes daily. They worked so hard and so many of them got PRs!”

The Wolf harriers closed their campaign by competing in the seven-team Cascade League Championships in Langley, earning four top 10 finishes in the individual standings.

Anna Powers hit the tape in second place, while running mates Sarai Dangerfield and Henry Purdue both claimed fourth place.

Lincoln Wagner rounded out the top times with a seventh-place performance.

The CMS boys placed second in the team standings, while their female counterparts were fourth.

South Whidbey swept both team titles while competing on a 3,000-meter course.

Wolves gallop in Granite

It’s becoming a familiar trip.

Traveling back to Granite Falls for the second time in five days, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad ran in the Granite Gallop Wednesday afternoon.

The trek followed on the heels of a jaunt Saturday to the same area for the Mountain Loop Invitational.

This time out, the Wolves were one of seven schools vying on a 1.7-mile course, seeking glory and PRs.

Coupeville’s boys finished second in the team standings, piling up 55 points to South Whidbey’s meet-best 31.

That put both Whidbey schools well ahead of King’s, which was third with 83 points.

Lakewood (118), Granite Falls (119), Sultan (155), and Northshore Christian Academy (156) rounded out the standings.

On the girl’s side of things, South Whidbey and Granite finished in a tie with 52 points, followed by Northshore (66), Coupeville (88), Lakewood (125), and Sultan (131).

Adeline Stevens and Jude Stadler of South Whidbey claimed individual crowns, while Wolf 8th grader Anna Powers continued her torrid fall, hitting the tape in second place.

Coupeville returns to action next Wednesday, Oct. 22, traveling to Langley for the season-concluding Cascade League Championships.

Claire Lachnit has her eyes on the finish line.

Young guns, runnin’ through the rain

A little rain won’t slow them down.

Or even a lot of rain.

Running through the liquid sunshine in Granite Falls Saturday, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad put up a stellar team-wide performance at the 5th annual Mountain Loop Invitational.

The scrappy Wolves notched third place in both of the team competitions, with Cavelero Mid-High, out of Lake Stevens, claiming top honors.

In the individual standings, Coupeville collected four top 10 performances, with Anna Powers and Sarai Dangerfield finishing second and third, respectively, in the girls rumble.

While the weather made navigating the 1.7-mile course a bit difficult at times, the Wolves held up well.

“It has been raining the whole time!” said CMS coach Amber Wyman. “The runners did great! The hill was muddy and wet, so a few fell on it, but they pushed through and finished strong!”

Coupeville is headed back to Granite next week, slated to appear at the Granite Gallop Wednesday, Oct. 15. The weather forecast for that day calls for sun.

Powers sizzles, Wolves zing

Anna Powers is setting a torrid pace.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grade cross country ace made it two wins in a row, outrunning a field of 65 girls Thursday at a seven-team home meet at Fort Casey State Park.

Powers finished nearly 13 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor to claim the title.

The boys individual crown went to South Whidbey 7th grader Wesley Samuelson, who out dueled 108 foes in his race.

Coupeville’s Henry Purdue and Lincoln Wagner were hot on his heels, finishing third and fourth, respectively, on the 1.7 mile-course.

The South enders claimed both team titles, with the Wolf boys landing in second place while their female counterparts finished fourth.

Coupeville returns to action almost immediately, hitting the trails at the John Payne XC Invitational Saturday at University Place.

Pack back on the attack

Anna Powers can’t be caught.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader outran the field Friday at the Return of the Salmon Cross Country Invitational in Sultan, claiming first-place in a field of 64 runners.

Powers victory, in which she beat her nearest rival by five-plus seconds, put a cap on a strong all-around day for the Wolves, who placed six runners — two girls and four boys — in the top 10.

Coupeville’s boys finished second in the team standings, almost catching powerhouse South Whidbey, while the Wolf girls were a solid third.

“We have some really strong runners!” said happy CMS coach Amber Wyman after her team finished the 3,000-meter races.

The Wolves will get another chance to show that next Thursday, Oct. 2, but closer to home.

CMS hosts a six-team Cascade League meet at Fort Casey State Park that day.

The pack is on the attack.
