Anna Powers is setting a torrid pace.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grade cross country ace made it two wins in a row, outrunning a field of 65 girls Thursday at a seven-team home meet at Fort Casey State Park.

Powers finished nearly 13 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor to claim the title.

The boys individual crown went to South Whidbey 7th grader Wesley Samuelson, who out dueled 108 foes in his race.

Coupeville’s Henry Purdue and Lincoln Wagner were hot on his heels, finishing third and fourth, respectively, on the 1.7 mile-course.

The South enders claimed both team titles, with the Wolf boys landing in second place while their female counterparts finished fourth.

Coupeville returns to action almost immediately, hitting the trails at the John Payne XC Invitational Saturday at University Place.

Speedy, one and all. (Amber Wyman photos)

Anna Powers can’t be caught.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader outran the field Friday at the Return of the Salmon Cross Country Invitational in Sultan, claiming first-place in a field of 64 runners.

Powers victory, in which she beat her nearest rival by five-plus seconds, put a cap on a strong all-around day for the Wolves, who placed six runners — two girls and four boys — in the top 10.

Coupeville’s boys finished second in the team standings, almost catching powerhouse South Whidbey, while the Wolf girls were a solid third.

“We have some really strong runners!” said happy CMS coach Amber Wyman after her team finished the 3,000-meter races.

The Wolves will get another chance to show that next Thursday, Oct. 2, but closer to home.

CMS hosts a six-team Cascade League meet at Fort Casey State Park that day.

The pack is on the attack.

They beat the raindrops one last time.

Running in the season finale Wednesday at the Cascade League Championships, Coupeville Middle School cross country harriers stayed one step ahead of the incoming bad weather.

As they did so, piling up top times, some of the young Wolves were captured on film by wandering photographer John Fisken, as seen in the pics above and below.

They closed with a bang.

Reaching the end of the middle school cross country season Wednesday, Coupeville got third place performances from 7th graders Anna Powers and Henry Purdue at the Cascade League Championships.

Meet host South Whidbey earned both team titles at the seven-team event, with CMS nailing down third place in the boys’ competition and fourth in the girls.

Falcon 7th graders Adeline Stevens and Ash Kline claimed the individual crowns on the 3,000-meter course, with 180 runners competing.

Coupeville, which has steadily been building its numbers, sent 25 harriers to the line.

Henry Purdue (3rd) and Cyrus Sparacio (9th) landed in the top 10 in the boys race.

“It was a great end to the season!” said Wolf coach Amber Wyman.

“This really is an amazing group of athletes! They always push themselves to go the extra mile. Literally. They work hard and it shows when they race.”

While one season ends, Wyman is already looking forward to the future.

“I’m sad to see this season come to an end,” she said. “Especially since they just seem to be hitting their stride.

“I’m already looking forward to seeing what the returning athletes will do next season!”

Wolves (l to r) Anna Powers, Claire Lachnit, and Allie Powers ran strongly in Granite Falls Saturday. (Amber Wyman photos)

They’re headed for the finish line and picking up speed.

Coupeville Middle School cross country runners competed in their next-to-last meet of the season Saturday, traveling to Granite Falls for the 4th annual Mountain Loop Invitational.

While there the Wolves acquitted themselves quite nicely, with the boys earning second place in the team standings and the girls third.

Zipping across the 1.7-mile course, CMS 7th grader Henry Purdue had his team’s best finish, claiming second, just four seconds off of the pace set by an 8th grader from Cedar Park Christian.

Cyrus Sparacio (5th) and Anna Powers (8th) also copped top 10 performances.

Amber Wyman’s team wraps up its season next Wednesday, Oct. 16, when the Wolves travel to Langley for the Cascade League Championships.
