Some people are just more likable than others.

Coupeville High School freshman Megan Thorn, who celebrates a birthday today, falls firmly into the category of those who bring a special light into the world.

Owner of a big brain, and a scrappy competitor on the athletic stage, she is, overwhelmingly, just a really nice person.

Megan, like mom Gretchen, has a genuine sweetness to her soul.

If you don’t like her, there’s something wrong with you. Seriously wrong.

When it comes to sports, the younger Thorn might not be the tallest, or the strongest, but her heart is three times the expected size.

Whether competing in track, basketball or soccer (where she was just named Most Improved during her freshman season), Megan never backs down or gives less than her best.

Her best moments as an athlete, though, have probably come in the world of horse riding, where she follows in the footsteps of fellow Wolves like Ally Roberts and Ashley Menges in being a highly-accomplished equestrian.

Whether she’s collecting ribbons (all the ribbons!) or meshing her talents with teammates in school sports, Thorn is a winner.

Who just happens to be one of the nicest people you will ever bump into.

It’s not hard to root for Megan, and it’s even easier to pay tribute to her.

So, happy birthday, Miss Thorn, and may it be a day worthy of you.

Winnin’ ribbons and takin’ names.

Now it’s time to do the Puyallup, again.

Coupeville High School athletes Ally Roberts and Ashley Menges didn’t horse around last weekend, sweeping through numerous riding events at the Island County Fair.

Roberts (and her faithful steed) captured Senior Performance High Point, while also winning titles in Performance Showmanship, Trail (where she netted a perfect score), Discipline Rail, and Gaming Showmanship.

She was also a Reserve Champion in Stock Seat Equitation.

Menges notched reserve status in Stock Seat Equation and Trail, while also collecting a string of blue ribbons in her other classes.

Roberts punched her ticket to the state fair (which runs Sept. 2-25 this year), while Menges is a second alternate.

It’s been a busy summer for the duo, who have been juggling riding with volleyball as they prepare for the kickoff of a new spiker season at CHS.

Menges is a sophomore, while Roberts is a senior, and both are expected to help anchor the Wolf varsity.

Life on the range calls to Megan Thorn.

“I love to ride my horses, they are my other life.”

A competitor with the Whidbey Western Gaming Association, Thorn, who will be a freshman at Coupeville High School this fall, has appeared several times at the Island County Fair.

With a fair amount of time devoted to her animals, their care and competing with them, she plans to reduce her sports load from middle school as she steps up a school.

After playing basketball (she was a scrappy ball-hawk) and running track at CMS, Thorn is planning on only playing soccer for the Wolves.

“In the beginning of the year I was going to do soccer and basketball, but due to being busy with my horses in the spring time I decided I will only be playing soccer,” she said.

“I love basketball and track but my favorite sport would be soccer,” Thorn added. “I have always played soccer since I was little.”

Part of the allure of soccer has been the chance to be a vital part of a team which needs to work together to succeed.

“I enjoy having a team, people I can count on, people I can ask questions to or just people I can talk to if I need someone,” Thorn said. “I like being an athlete because of the people I get to meet and become friends with.”

On the field, she considers her speed and her willingness to be a team player (“I play wherever someone puts me”) as strengths.

“I need to work on being confident on how I play,” Thorn said. “Just play the game, don’t overthink what I am doing.”

As she jumps into high school life, her focus on mixing “playing strongly and having fun” with nabbing good grades in the classroom remains very much in place.

Those traits were instilled in her by parents Blake and Gretchen Thorn.

“The biggest impact I have would be my parents; they are always supporting me with whatever I do,” Megan said. “I love them so much, and I thank them every day for being there for me.

“They made me who I am.”

There is irrepressible. And then there is Ally Roberts.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, a fun-lovin’ ball of fire who bounces merrily from cheer to volleyball to horse competitions, has big footsteps to follow.

Almost every single member of her extended family was a standout athlete or an influential coach during their time as a Wolf.

I mean, Ally has a family reunion every time she goes in the CHS gym and looks up at the wall where the Athlete of the Year photos are hung up.

But you know what? The kid is blazin’ her own brightly-lit trail.

And she’s doing it her way, with a kind heart, a mega-watt smile and just a hint of feisty pluck.

Miss Roberts works hard and earns the ribbons and awards people hand her on a regular basis, but shows no signs of letting her growing stardom go to her head.

Today, as she hits the big 1-6, her future is as bright as anyone in the town she calls home.

Happy birthday, Ally!

May your day shine as brightly as you do every time I see you.

Have to collect them all.

The pursuit of horse riding ribbons continues, and Ally Roberts is hot on the trail of earning as many as possible.

The Coupeville High School sophomore picked up two more at the state fair in Puyallup over the weekend, claiming a fourth-place in Hunt Seat Equitation and an eighth in Trail.

Competing in the senior division for the first time, she rode her horse, Tiger, in six events, making the championship round in four classes.

“It was a great first fair as a senior!,” said an excited Roberts.

She’ll now make a fast turn-around in her busy sports life, rejoining her CHS volleyball teammates.
