The calendar is shrinking and the competition is getting tougher.

There are two regular-season track meets left for Coupeville High School athletes — including a home one with Lopez and Friday Harbor Monday (3:15 PM) — before the postseason takes everyone’s focus.

As of Sunday morning, eight Wolves have posted one of the top 10 performances in 1A this season.

Sophomore Lindsey Roberts leads the way, with her name popping up three times, once in an individual event and twice as part of relay teams.

Fellow state meet vet Jacob Smith, a junior, is the lone Wolf to appear in two different individual events.

The Top 10 CHS performances (valid as of 10:42 AM Sunday):

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (7th) 16.30

4 x 100 Relay — Lauren Grove, Roberts, Maya Toomey-Stout, Mallory Kortuem (10th) 52.17

Jacob Smith basks in the afterglow after winning the 100 Saturday at the 19-team Lil’ Norway Invitational. (Deb Smith photo)

Hey, big city folks, Jacob Smith is fast.

The Coupeville High School junior stared down a field packed with 2A and 3A runners Saturday at the 7th annual Lil’ Norway Invitational in Poulsbo and left them choking on his exhaust.

Beating 29 other runners, he zipped to a win in the 100, then came within .37 of a second of adding a victory in the 200.

Smith’s rapid runs (his 4 x 100 relay team also claimed 2nd) and a 2nd in the triple jump by Mitchell Carroll propelled the Wolf boys to a 4th place finish (out of 19 teams), the best showing by a 1A school.

The Coupeville girls, led by second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (Lindsey Roberts) and 4 x 100 relay, finished 7th.

Like the boys team, the girls had the best showing of any of the six 1A schools in attendance at North Kitsap High School.

The meet also drew one 3A school, eight 2A schools and four B schools.

North Kitsap won the boys team title, while Port Angeles topped the girls race. Both are 2A schools.

Coupeville’s tent wasn’t as full as normal, as each school was limited to two athletes (and one relay team) per event.

Jacob Martin (right) mentally prepares for the moment when he will help Coupeville win the 4 x 100 relay Wednesday. (Deb Smith photo)

Giant killers.

Facing off with three large 2A schools Wednesday, lil’ Coupeville (small even by 1A standards) pulled off three wins and set 32 PRs at a four-team track meet in Bremerton.

The Wolves didn’t have the depth to upend North Kitsap, Olympic and Sequim in the team standings — the CHS girls finished third, the boys fourth — but they more than held their own as individuals.

Sophomore sensations Danny Conlisk (400) and Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles) ran away with titles, with Conlisk narrowly missing out on a double dip.

He came within a second of also winning the 800, one of seven 2nd place finishes compiled by the Wolves.

The third win came courtesy the men’s 4 x 100 relay squad, which was comprised of seniors Jacob Martin and Mitchell Carroll and juniors Cameron Toomey-Stout and Jacob Smith.

They’ve doubled their numbers.

With a second meet in the books, the Coupeville High School track and field team now has eight Wolves sitting somewhere in the top 10 for performances by all 1A athletes.

That’s up from four after the first round of competition.

They stared down the big boys (and girls).

Facing off with three much-larger schools, the Coupeville High School track and field squad claimed five wins and 31 PRs Thursday at a six-team meet in Port Angeles.

The 1A Wolves, who went up against 2A schools Olympic, Kingston and Port Angeles, as well as 1B teams Clallam Bay and Neah Bay, did well across the board.

Coupeville got wins from Lindsey Roberts (100 hurdles), Jacob Smith (200), Danny Conlisk (800), Jacob Martin (javelin) and the girls 4 x 100 relay team.

That unit, which consists of two returning members from a squad which placed 6th at state last year, and two newcomers, was running together for the first time in competition.

Lauren Grove, a senior, and Roberts, a sophomore, are the holdovers, while freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem are replacing the graduated Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone.

Along with the wins, CHS nabbed seven second-place finishes, including two from senior thrower Skyler Lawrence (shot put, discus).
