Mercer Island has money, Cow Town has skills.

Sparked by its Coupeville mercenaries, the North Whidbey Deception boys’ soccer squad pulled out a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

The victory propelled the booters to 5-1 on the season and keeps them within shouting distance of winning a league title.

In typical fashion, the future Wolf stars gave their opponent a brief bit of hope, then crushed said hope, hard.

Mercer Island punched in a goal off of a penalty kick to take the early lead, then the Coupeville contingent took control of the game, teaming up to score both of North Whidbey’s goals.

Aram Leyva set up the equalizer, dropping the ball behind the Mercer Island defense.

Running mate Matthew Kelley took it from there, drawing out the goalie before banging home the ball with his left foot.

Not content with a mere tie, Whidbey got the winning goal on a play set up by Coupeville’s Jake Mitten.

The lanky CMS seventh grader popped the ball into the general area of the goal, leaving it there for Leyva and Kelley to converge on.

Corralling the ball a millisecond before it skipped out of bounds, Leyva spun and shot a rocket off of the goalie’s hip, banking it in like a pool hustler taking money from a patsy.

After that, it was all up to the Deception defense, and it went into lock-down mode, sending the richniks back to their mansions crying sweet tears of regret.

It’s Trevor Bell’s (64) line, and you’re not getting through. No sir.

Before you can play under Friday Night Lights, you have to endure Wednesday Afternoon Mist.

Playing at Chimacum on a damp October day, the Coupeville Middle School gridiron warriors put in work yesterday.

“It’s kind of hard for me to put into words the amount of time and effort those boys put into believing they can win,” said CMS coach Bob Martin. “The first half was a learning experience, the second, they did great!”

Along for the ferry ride, camera in hand, was Mimi Johnson, who provides us with the snappy pics found above.

A new season kicks off today.

With Coupeville High School still riding high off last night’s win at Chimacum, its middle school counterparts boarded the bus Saturday morning to head to a jamboree at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

CMS will play the host school, as well as Forks and Chimacum at the all-day affair, then lace it up for real Wednesday, Sept. 23 when Stevens comes to Whidbey.

That school, which the Wolves haven’t played before, boasts 600+ students and has a football roster that groans with 70 players.

By contrast, Coupeville coach Bob Martin has 26 guys to call on at the moment.

They are:

Noa Allen
Raymond Anderson
Trevor Jon Bell
Tyson Bovee
Michael Brewer
Koa Davison
Sage Downes
Dakota Eck
Trystan Ford
Mason Grove
Dawson Houston
Alex Jimenez
Elliott Johnson
Matthew Kelley

The effort was there, just not the victories.

Despite putting up a strong effort, the North Whidbey Islanders FC-01 boys’ soccer squad, which features a number of Coupeville booters, dropped three of four games in Redmond last weekend.

Whidbey wraps its summer season in two weeks with an appearance at the Rimland Classic in Bellingham.

Playing against top-level competition in Redmond, the Islanders netted a scoreless tie against a Crossfire Select squad in the highlight of their weekend.

They had a ton of shots, many from close range, but couldn’t quite pull the trigger enough times to make a run deep into tourney play.

In the team’s three losses, Coupeville’s Matthew Kelley netted a goal off of a corner kick, while Aram Leyva notched an assist on a different score.

Fellow Wolves Sam Wynn, Michael Laska, Sage Downes and Jake Mitten all chipped in with strong play, with Wynn making a stellar impression on defense.

North and Central united to knock off South.

Sparked by its Coupeville mercenaries, the North Whidbey Islanders Boys FC-01 soccer squad ran out to a big lead Wednesday, then held on in the waning moments to edge host South Whidbey 3-2.

Matthew Kelley punched in the game’s first goal, on a shot into the corner of the net from 10 yards out, and he and fellow CMS booters Aram Leyva and Jake Mitten kept up the pressure all game.

The Islanders rolled out to a 3-0 lead at the half, then gave up two goals in the final four minutes of the game to make the final score seem a little closer than it really was.

With the win, North Whidbey improved to 4-1 in league play. It closes regular season play with a game at Marysville this weekend.
