Jake the Snake will be running wild in Burnaby.

Former Coupeville High School football/baseball star Jake Tumblin, who rushed for 1,000+ yards in his senior season in 2013, will be taking his game North of the border.

Tumblin has accepted an offer to attend Simon Fraser University in British Columbia on a partial scholarship.

SFU, which claims a Scottish Terrier named McFogg the Dog as its mascot (thanks, Wikipedia!), plays NCAA Division II football, the only Canadian school to do so.

Home to 30,000 students, the school, named in honor of a fur trader and explorer, was founded in 1965.

The Clan, who went 2-9 last season, are scheduled to play Central Washington, which claims Tumblin’s CHS teammate Nick Streubel on its roster, twice in 2015.

The Big Hurt red-shirted his freshman season at Central, but it’s unknown how Simon Fraser will use Tumblin.

“As far as playing time, they mentioned putting me on special teams my first year, and possibly defensive back,” Tumblin said. “But that all depends on how much I produce during camp.”

The chance to play, and the school’s stellar academic history, both drew him to the school.

“SFU offered me a great opportunity to earn a degree from a very prestigious school while playing the game I love,” Tumblin said.

He plans to go into business, and Simon Fraser has a very well-regarded school of business.

“I really like how dedicated the university is to academic success,” Tumblin said. “And how much effort the staff puts into making sure the players are excelling in their studies.”

Hanging out with (l to r) daughter Ashlyn, wife Shannon, Jake and his #1 fan, Izzy LeVine.

It is the quote that will live forever.

And yes, after wife Shannon read said quote, Coupeville coach/living legend Chris Tumblin was not allowed to give out any more quotes.

But we’ll always have that moment when Tumblin described the play of Wolf football standout Josh Bayne thusly:

Josh had one tackle on a receiver, folded him in half like a cheap hooker who was punched in the gut by her pimp. He had to sit out for awhile and wait for his liver to start working again.

Memories…

Of course, there’s more to the man than just a way with words.

He’s also the only Central Whidbey coach in memory to have guided his team to a state title, beating the big city boys to win a little league title with a squad that included future Wolf stars like Ben Etzell, Jake Tumblin and Morgan Payne.

And today is his birthday. The day the original Rumblin’ Tumblin hit the ground running and never looked back.

Happy birthday, Chris!

You are, and have always been, a straight shooter who said exactly what was on his mind and a talented coach who got the most out of his players.

Of course, you’re also a pretty dang good paramedic, as well.

Coupeville is lucky to have you.

Jake Tumblin

Jake Tumblin

He was, and is, the modest superstar.

Jake Tumblin was the most electrifying man in sports entertainment during his years as a Coupeville Wolf, but if you ever heard him boast about his accomplishments in public, that would be one more time than I ever heard.

He would slash through defenses on the football fields, racking up 200+ yards, than give props to his linemen.

On the baseball diamond, he would give opposing pitcher’s heart palpitations as he twirled and danced, then rip off another stolen base in a cloud of dust, before popping up, giving CHS coach Willie Smith a slight nod and going about his business.

The kid had nicknames, some of which may have just been made up by me for my own amusement.

JT. (Yelled Jay-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE by the crowd).

Jake the Snake.

Shake ‘n Bake Jake.

Rumblin’ Tumblin (who was never stumblin’).

Through it all, though, Jake was calm, quiet, a leader by example, on the field and off, someone it was easy to root for at all times.

As he celebrates his birthday today, with his eyes firmly locked on making his dream of playing college football a reality, he remains the same guy.

After Coupeville pulled off a thrilling 35-28 upset of South Whidbey Friday to reclaim “The Bucket,” Tumblin was there on the field, mingling with his former teammates, congratulating them and CHS coach Tony Maggio.

In a few words and fist bumps, he passed the mantle on to a new generation of Wolf stars. The best thing they can do is to play and carry themselves the way their predecessor did.

Rumblin’ Tumblin put on a show, always, but he did it with style and class.

He honored the uniform, his school and his town, and he’ll always have our respect for it.

It was High Noon in Internet City, and Amanda Fabrizi and her fans had the fastest trigger fingers Sunday.

Capping a furious final day of voting, in which all the rules were suspended and voters were allowed to stuff the ballot box for the final 12 hours, Coupeville Sports can now proudly announce the winner of our 2013-2014 Athlete Supreme, and it is Miss Fabrizi.

The recent Wolf grad, who was a standout volleyball player and a deadly scorer for the CHS girls’ basketball squad, came storming out of a second place tie Sunday morning and never looked back.

She roared past fellow Class of 2014 grad Jake Tumblin, who had led since the poll debuted Wednesday, eventually building a margin of more than 500 votes before the gridiron giant staged a late rally.

Fabrizi ultimately claimed a 237-vote win over Tumblin, while CHS junior football/baseball star Josh Bayne jumped from 10th to 3rd over the final hours of the poll.

Defending champ Nick Streubel was a non-factor the second time around, despite being selected as an All-State football player.

One suspects big sis Amanda, who carried him to voting victory last year, was too busy with her own college graduation to spend much time mashing computer keys.

The final vote totals:

Amanda Fabrizi – 1,365

Jake Tumblin – 1,128

Josh Bayne – 652

Makana Stone – 417

Hailey Hammer – 326

Breeanna Messner – 304

Ben Etzell – 131

Julia Myers – 127

Nick Streubel – 94

Aaron Curtin – 93

Wiley Hesselgrave – 92

Madeline Strasburg – 91
