Even in a pair of losses, there were bright moments.

While both of the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball teams fell Wednesday, big plays popped up all over the place and travelin’ photo man John Fisken was on hand to capture most of them with a click of the camera.

Risen Johnson added 14, most of his points coming off of steals and ankle-breaking moves.

This? This was a beat-down.

Attacking every step of the way, a super-aggressive Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad ran visiting Darrington off the court Friday night.

It wasn’t just the score — which fell 72-41 in favor of the Wolves — but the way they won.

Steal after steal, most turning into breakaway buckets.

A ferocious battle for every loose ball, with CHS coming up with the elusive orb about 85.3% of the time.

Maximum effort from every player one through eleven.

Thoroughly rinsing away any lingering bad taste from the first two games of their season, the Wolves (1-2) romped, and had fun doing it.

Passes zipped back and forth, players set each other up and the bench never stopped rockin’, from tip-off to final whistle.

It was a rebirth of an old school battle between schools that used to play in the same league, and it was the first time this season Coupeville put its pedal through the metal for an entire game.

For the third straight game, the Wolves came out strongly in the first quarter.

Five different players scored, led by junior Dalton Martin, who threw down a quick six, and Coupeville used a 10-0 run to open a 16-11 lead.

Three of the buckets during the surge came off of consecutive steals, while the fourth bucket was a wham-bam miracle.

Freshman Hunter Smith dribbled his man down, whirled and laid the ball right into Ryan Griggs waiting arms, giving the junior the perfect lead for an open layup.

That was merely the prelude, however.

Breaking the game wide open, the Wolves went on a 17-0 tear midway through the second quarter, fueled, again, by steal after steal.

On three consecutive plays, Risen Johnson, Joel Walstad and Aaron Trumbull converted steals into breakaway buckets, before Johnson, emulating Hunter Smith, set Matt Shank up for another basket with a pinpoint pass into the paint.

Coupeville, showing the killer instinct coach Anthony Smith has preached, never let up all evening.

The Wolves poured in 16, 19, 19 and 18 points, remaining remarkably consistent, while also stretching the lead out quarter after quarter.

One player would go on a tear — Johnson breaking ankles or Martin crashing hard to the hoop and sliding around defenders to scoop the ball up off the backboard for buckets — and then another.

It was an equal opportunity fun fest, with 10 of 11 players scoring, led by Martin, who hit for a game-high 16.

Johnson, in his third game at a new school, popped for 14, while Walstad threw down 12.

Trumbull (6), Wiley Hesselgrave (6), Aaron Curtin (6), Griggs (4), CJ Smith (4), Shank (3) and Gabe Wynn (1) rounded out the scoring attack.

Coupeville will get an immediate chance to keep its hot streak alive, when it returns to action Saturday with a home game against Bellevue Christian (2 PM).

**Darrington did not have a boys’ JV team, so the Wolf boys only played one game Friday.

And so it begins.

Basketball is officially back today, as the first high school games tip off in the CHS gym. For the next three months or so, the sound of shoes squeaking on the hardwood will echo across the land.

Up first is a non-conference boys’ battle, as the Wolves host Meridian. JV tips at 5:15, varsity at 7.

Coupeville hits the road Tuesday for a twinbill in Langley against their longtime Island rivals, South Whidbey.

Now a non-conference affair with CHS having jumped from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference to the 1A Olympic League, that doesn’t diminish the annual rumble for bragging rights.

The Wolf girls play at 5, the boys at 6:45, with the teams respective JV squads going at opposite times.

CHS fans then get back-to-back home doubleheaders Friday and Saturday to cap the opening week of play.

Darrington hits Whidbey Friday (boys 5:15, girls 7), with Bellevue Christian visiting Saturday (girls 12:15, boys 2).

Time to lace up the high tops and let loose the dogs of war.

Wiley Hesselgrave, destroyer of souls and the team’s Defensive MVP.

"Hi. We're gonna roll up about 500 yards on you. That work? It does? Nice."

Wolf linemen Aaron Wright (76) and Matt Shank (64) greet the guys they will later rough up.

Eight Coupeville High School football players took home team awards Friday at their season-ending banquet, but my money is on Gabe Wynn as the fastest of the honorees to reach the stage.

If not, the Wolf sophomore might need to give back his hardware honoring him as Mr. Hustle.

Other CHS players who rambled, perhaps a little slower, to get their awards included seniors Josh Bayne and Joel Walstad, who shared the Offensive MVP and junior Wiley Hesselgrave, who nabbed Defensive MVP.

Senior linemen Matt Shank (Coaches Award), Aaron Wright (Offensive Lineman of the Year) and Oscar Liquidano (Defensive Lineman of the Year) were joined by freshman defensive back Hunter Smith (Most Improved) in rounding out the winners.

Josh Bayne (John Fisken photos)

Josh Bayne (John Fisken photos)

line

Oscar Liquidano mans the line.

It took almost a decade in the last league, but just one semester in the new one.

Coming on the heels of Ben Etzell being named the baseball MVP of the 1A/2A Cascade Conference in the spring — the only time a Coupeville High School player took home that league’s top honor in any sport — Josh Bayne reached the top of the mountain in his new home.

Bayne, who led all 1A players in the state in rushing yards (1,528), touchdowns (25) and interceptions (6), was selected as the first football MVP in the new 1A Olympic League.

While Port Townsend (5-1 in conference) claimed the league title, there was little doubt that Coupeville’s two-way terror would claim top individual honors. Any other choice might have incited a riot.

In addition to the numbers above, Bayne also caught 31 passes for 460 yards, made 11 kickoff/punt returns for 224 yards and compiled 2,281 all-purpose yards. The one time he took a pitch and dropped back to pass, he completed a 43-yard bomb.

On defense he racked up 91 tackles (77 solo, 14 assists), which put him #3 in 1A, while recovering four fumbles and garnering two sacks to go with his picks.

Bayne wasn’t the only Wolf to be honored when coaches met, with four other CHS gridiron giants being tabbed for First-Team honors.

Senior Aaron Wright was honored for his work on the offensive line, while seniors Matt Shank and Oscar Liquidano were picked as defensive lineman. Junior Wiley Hesselgrave earned his spot as a linebacker.

Senior quarterback Joel Walstad and freshman defensive back Hunter Smith earned Honorable Mention status.

Smith was the only 9th grader in the league to be honored.
