“What a day!”

Coupeville was the epicenter for track and field action Saturday, with the Wolves hosting the District 1 Championships, while delivering a dazzling performance for their home fans.

The CHS boys claimed a team title, with the girls’ squad finishing 3rd, while 13 athletes in red and black punched their ticket to the 2B state meet.

Coupeville coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting will travel with their stars to Yakima for that event, slated to go down May 29-31 at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School.

Saturday’s district meet, which was a 2-in-1 affair with both 1B and 2B teams vying, featured 13 schools.

In the 2B battle, Coupeville’s boys romped to the team title, racking up 145 points, with Mount Vernon Christian second with 72.

Friday Harbor (66), Orcas Island (58), and La Conner (46) rounded out the field.

On the girl’s side, MVC (153) was top dog, with La Conner (89), Coupeville (62.5), Friday Harbor (49.5), and Orcas Island (21) chasing the Hurricanes.

Providence Classical Christian and Lopez Island won 1B girls and boys team titles in eight-school battles.

For 2B competitors such as Coupeville, districts was the last stop before state.

Earn a top two finish Saturday, and you’re in. Hit the line in third, you’re close, but no cigar.

Katie Marti (Shot Put, Discus, Javelin) and Carson Field (800, 1600, 3200) paced the Wolves, each winning three titles.

Cael Wilson, Preston Epp, and Chase Anderson also qualified for state in three events, with Lyla Stuurmans earning her invitation in two.

Blake Burrows, Malachi Somes, George Spear, Wyatt Fitch-Marron, Matthew Ward, Marquette Cunningham, and Davin Houston round out Coupeville’s state qualifiers.

With both of the boys’ relay teams advancing, Wolf coaches will pick alternates for those squads, which may bump the total higher.

Of the 13 CHS stars scheduled to make the trip, two have previously collected state meet medals while at the big dance.

Seniors Lyla Stuurmans and Cael Wilson have three and two, respectively.

Overall, 90 Wolves have brought home a medal since the modern era of state track and field meets began in 1964.

Saturday’s meet dodged a forecast calling for high winds and heavy rain, with teams dealing with just a few splatters of liquid sunshine and a couple of moderate prairie breezes.

Whether they advanced to state, or wrapped their season Saturday, each Wolf in action got a shout-out from their coaches.

“The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as our athletes gave it everything they had,” Bob Martin said.

“We’re incredibly proud of every athlete. The dedication and heart shown today was inspiring.”

Martin and Bitting also praised the contributions of their assistant coaches, and the combined forces of Wolf Nation which came together to pull off a successful big-time meet.

“A huge thank you to our incredible community of volunteers who helped create a seamless experience for the 13 schools in attendance,” Martin said.

“And to our team parents — your hospitality was unmatched, with a breakfast spread that could rival a gourmet brunch!”

The finish line is within sight, and every second matters.

Every inch, as well.

With the high school track and field season down to just two upcoming meets — districts and state — the battle for the top marks is at its most intense.

A look at which Coupeville athletes appear in the top 10 among 2B competitors statewide confirms that.

A week ago, Carson Field (1600), Matthew Ward (triple jump), and the CHS boys 4 x 400 relay squad were on that list.

This time around, they’ve been bumped off the chart, at least for the moment.

But Cael Wilson added six inches to his PR in the pole vault and moved up from 4th to 3rd, and the Wolves are hanging tough in other areas.

Where things sit statewide through May 11, with the district meet set to go down this Saturday in Coupeville:

The postseason is off to a roaring start.

Kicking off the final three meets of the season, the Coupeville High School track and field team put on an impressive show Wednesday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Competing in La Conner, the Wolves racked up 13 wins and 25 PRs, with the boys romping to a team title.

Led by senior Carson Field, who swept to titles in the 800, 1600, and 3200, Coupeville’s male athletes piled up 208 points.

That put them way ahead of runner-up Mount Vernon Christian, which finished with an even 100.

Orcas Island (80), La Conner (71), Friday Harbor (53), and Concrete (11) rounded out the field.

On the girl’s side of things, MVC (211) held off La Conner (135) and Coupeville (100), with Friday Harbor (65), Orcas Island (24), and Concrete (9) bringing up the rear.

The stellar team-wide performance brought a smile to the faces of Wolf coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting on a wild ‘n woolly day.

“They made a statement!” the coaches said.

“Throw in some wind, a couple of flying canopies, a bit of blood, and unwavering grit – Coupeville tough, through and through.”

The next hurdle for the Wolves is the District 1 meet May 17, which they host.

After that is the state meet May 29-31 in Yakima for those who qualify.

They’re winners in and out of the classroom.

Three-sport Coupeville High School senior athletes Katie Marti and Landon Roberts have been selected as the final Lions Club Students of the Quarter for the 2024-2025 school year.

The duo will be honored May 21.

The Lions Club, which has awarded scholarships to CHS students for over 87 years, picks its top students each quarter, then selects two as the Students of the Year come graduation time.

All 12th grade students are eligible for the quarterly award, which is voted on by school staff.

Criteria include “community service, effort, character, social relationships, scholarship, and sportsmanship when applicable.”

Katie Marti is kind of a big deal. (Photo courtesy Christi Messner)

Katie Marti, daughter of Christi Messner and Frank Marti, has played softball, track, volleyball, and basketball during her high school career.

She was the starting setter and a team captain for the CHS spikers as they earned a 4th place trophy at the 2B state tourney this past fall, the best finish in program history.

Marti, who has been named to multiple All-League teams for her athletic accomplishments, is also a member of the National Honor Society and Captains Club and a busy bee in the world of community service.

Some of her volunteer activities have included Lions Leo Club, beach cleanup activities, assisting with youth basketball clinics, Race the Reserve, Coupeville Water Festival, Coupeville Arts Festival, Lions Club Auction, and Mussel Fest.

A lover of science and math who carries a 3.7 GPA, Marti is a lifeguard and teaches swim lessons in the summer.

She plans to attend Western Washington University and major in marine biology.

Landon Roberts, son of Sherry Bonacci and Jon Roberts, has played baseball, basketball, and cross country for the Wolves, while being named a captain in all of his sports.

Like Marti, he’s in the National Honor Society and is always on the move.

Roberts operates a landscaping business, works part-time at Sunnyside Cemetery, and has been involved in the Lions Club garage sale, Race the Reserve, and the Booster Club’s annual fundraising dinner.

A mentor to young athletes, he also officiates youth sports.

Devoted to the arts of welding and woodworking, Roberts has a 3.6 GPA and plans to attend a technical college in Washington state.

While there, he wants to obtain certification and an AAS in welding and fabrication, while trying out for the baseball team.

The end is near.

The high school track and field season is down to its final three meets, with Coupeville set to compete at league, district, and (hopefully) state competitions over the next 26 days.

As the Wolves, and their many competitors, have battled this spring, the best times and distances across the state have been ever-changing.

One moment you’re in the top 10, the next you’re fighting to get back in, and on and on.

Each Monday we pause to take a look at the stats for athletes in the 2B classification and see how the Wolves compare with stars from other schools.

So, let’s do the dance again.
