But wait, there’s more.

The Coupeville High school track and field team has picked up one more regular season meet, after being accepted to this Saturday’s Shoreline Invitational.

That will keep the Wolves busy as they prep for the postseason run of league, district, and state meets, which begin May 7.

It will also give CHS athletes another shot at landing a time or distance which moves them into the top 10 for 2B athletes statewide.

Those lists are ever changing, as you can see by our weekly review below, which has seen changes in just seven days.

As the Wolves make the turn towards the final sprint through May, here’s where Coupeville names pop up on the current top 10 lists for 2B track stars:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Katie Marti (5th) 34-01

BOYS:

800 — Carson Field (3rd) 2:02.03

1600 — Field (9th) 4:41.96

4 x 100 Relay — Marquette Cunningham, Davin Houston, Preston Epp, Chase Anderson (5th) 44.47

4 x 400 Relay — Anderson, Blake Burrows, Cael Wilson, Epp (8th) 3:38.79

High Jump — Wilson (4th) 6-01; Houston (10th) 5-08

Pole Vault — Wilson (3rd-tie) 12-00

Triple Jump — Matthew Ward (9th) 39-11

Preston Epp is a step away from slapping the baton in Chase Anderson’s hand.

It was a classic beatdown.

Winning 12 of 18 events Saturday at the Coupeville Classic Invite, the Wolf boys track and field team destroyed its competition.

When all the points were added up at the regular season finale, CHS male athletes had racked up a score of 190.5.

Or more than the other four teams combined.

Put the scores of Mount Vernon Christian (50.5), East Jefferson (45.5), Clallam Bay (39), and Neah Bay (21.5) together, and they equal 156.5 points.

Sweet sassy molassy.

On the girls’ side of things, everything was a wee bit closer, with MVC (120) taking the team title, followed by Coupeville (93), East Jefferson (88), Neah Bay (62), and Clallam Bay (16).

Top performers included Katie Marti, who claimed three individual titles, winning the shot put, discus, and hammer throw.

Combine relay team wins with individual victories, and Chase Anderson (4), Preston Epp (3), and Cael Wilson (3) topped the Wolf boys.

All in all, it made for “a fast and furious day on the prairie” according to CHS coach Bob Martin.

“Tons of PRs, great team energy, and another strong showing by our volunteers and parents,” he said. “Hard work is paying off!”

Up next for the Wolves is the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, set to go down May 7 in La Conner.

After that, for those who advance, will be districts and the state championships.

It was a day for winners.

Hosting its first home meet of the season Wednesday, the Coupeville High School track and field team went wild in the sun, racking up 12 wins, 62 PRs, and a ton of positive memories.

Toss in a team title for the Wolf boys, and the fact that an athlete accidentally left behind by Orcas Island eventually got retrieved, and things were fairly peachy all around.

“Thanks to our all-star crew, it ran smoother than a sprinter on a tailwind,” said CHS coach Bob Martin.

Christi Messner, Jen Marzocca, Aimee Bishop, and Barbi Ford worked their magic on the timing system, Jerry Helm fired the gun like a pro, and Neil Rixe caught every finish with eagle-eyed precision.

“Huge thanks to the incredible coaches who jumped in to help run events, so every athlete had a chance to shine.

“And let’s not forget our legendary team parents — fueling the crew with hot chili, soup, and enough snacks to power a relay team. It truly takes a village to run a meet, and Coupeville showed up in style.”

The Wolf boys topped the 13-team field with a 219-point explosion, putting them way ahead of runner-up La Conner (103), while the Wolf girls (98) were third, behind Mount Vernon Christian (185) and La Conner (111.5).

Axel Marshall (left) and Cael Wilson discuss strategy.

Cael Wilson led the way, picking up three individual wins (high jump, pole vault, long jump), while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 400 relay squad.

Carson Field (800, 1600, 3200), Katie Marti (discus, javelin), Lyla Stuurmans (800), and Matthew Ward (triple jump) also came out on top, as did the boys 4 x 100 unit.

The Wolves get back at it this Saturday, but with a change in their game plan.

Originally slated to travel to Cashmere, they are instead trekking off to the Forks Lion Club Invitational.

The second half run begins.

Returning from a spring break layoff, the Coupeville High School track and field squad jumped right into the deep end Saturday, competing at the 31-team Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham.

Despite repping one of the smallest student bodies in the field, the Wolves held their own against their big school rivals.

Coupeville’s girls finished 17th in the team standings, with their male counterparts claiming 18th on their side of the leaderboard.

Shorecrest (girls) and Shorewood (boys), both 3A schools, finished atop the standings.

On an individual basis, Katie Marti and Matthew Ward had the best performances for the Wolves.

Marti finished 2nd in the shot put, out of 30 competitors, and 3rd (of 28) in the discus, while Ward was 4th (of 17) in the triple jump.

The Solberg meet, hosted by Sehome, featured several events the Wolves don’t normally see, such as a 4 x 800 relay and a steeplechase.

With the Wolves racking up 16 PRs Saturday against stellar competition, it’s a strong start to the latter part of the season.

“A bright and energetic day as we eased back into the groove after spring break,” said Wolf coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“Plenty of sunshine, strong finishes, and everyone held their own.”

Coupeville has three meets left, two at their own stadium, before beginning postseason action at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Up first is a home meet Wednesday, April 16, followed by a trip to the Cashmere Invitational three days later.

Cael Wilson, seen here last season, won two events Wednesday in La Conner. (Bailey Thule photo)

They have the numbers and the talent.

Boasting one of its biggest rosters in program history, the Coupeville High School track and field team made its presence felt Wednesday at a season-opening 11-team meet in La Conner.

The Wolf boys ran away with the team title, racking up 182.5 points, while their nearest competition, Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner, finished with 88 and 87 respectively.

On the girls’ side of things, CHS earned third place with 100.67 points, trailing just MVC (144.5) and La Conner (129.5).

Three Wolves double-dipped on opening day, bringing home titles in a pair of events.

Lyla Stuurmans (800, 1600), Cael Wilson (Pole Vault, High Jump), and Carson Field (800, 1600) were two-time winners, while Aleksia Jump (Pole Vault), George Spear (3200), and Katie Marti (Shot Put) also claimed crowns.

Rounding out Coupeville’s winners were its 4 x 100 boys’ relay team comprised of Marquette Cunningham, Preston Epp, Davin Houston, and Chase Anderson.

“Great first meet!” said CHS coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“A little rain, a little wind, and a lot of PRs – we’re so proud of the team!”

After finishing round one with 10 wins, 95 PRs, and a team title, the Wolves will get right back at it this Saturday, Mar. 22 when they compete at the Rainier Icebreaker.
