Ashlie Shank (John Fisken photo)

The youngest one is making a play for the throne.

Coupeville High School freshman Ashlie Shank has been living in the athletic shadow cast by older brothers Matt and Brian, but Friday night she seized the spotlight all for herself.

Nailing a running jumper a tick before the buzzer, she completed a wild final play and lifted the Wolf JV girls’ basketball team to a thrilling come-from-behind 26-24 win over visiting Klahowya.

The victory, which kept CHS girls’ basketball perfect in 1A Olympic League play (the Wolf varsity and JV are a combined 20-0 since the league debuted last year), lifted the JV to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in league play.

And it only happened thanks to a game-ending surge and a final play that worked to perfection.

Having snagged the ball with the game tied and the clock madly ticking down, Ema Smith shot up the right side of the court.

As a defender lurched at her, the Wolf frosh rose up and lobbed the ball to Kyla Briscoe, who caught it, whirled and found Shank in stride.

With no hesitation at all, Shank went straight at the hoop, pulling up at the last second and letting fly with a soft lil’ jumper that splashed nothing but net.

As the ball dropped through, hitting the floor, the clock went under two seconds, and all Klahowya could do was throw a full-court desperation heave that only traveled less than half the distance before crashing back to Earth.

Shank’s dagger capped an 8-2 run to close the game for the Wolves.

After leading for the entire first half, Coupeville briefly lost the advantage in the third, then regained it, only to give it right back thanks to a stretch of ice-cold shooting.

Trailing 22-18, the Wolves got huge plays from Smith, who banged home a rebound to cut the margin to two, and Briscoe, who hit back-to-back jumpers.

Her only two buckets of the game, the first one forced a 22-22 tie, then the second one re-knotted the game at 24 after Klahowya had reclaimed the lead off of an offensive rebound.

The Eagles had the ball and a chance to take the lead, but failed against a hawkish defense employed by five Wolves who had listened to coach Amy King in the timeout huddle and came out aggressive but smart.

That set up Smith to Briscoe to Shank, which will now reside in lore when folks talk about great finishes at Coupeville hoops games.

Shank and Lauren Rose paced the Wolves with seven points apiece, with Rose dropping all of her points in the first half, when she was a one-woman wrecking crew.

Her steal and breakaway bucket, coming on the heels of a softly arcing jumper from Maddy Hilkey, gave Coupeville its biggest lead at 5-0.

Smith and Briscoe added four apiece, while Hilkey and Allison Wenzel each chipped in with a bucket to round out the scoring stats.

Skyler Lawrence didn’t score, but thoroughly controlled the paint, ripping down rebound after rebound, staring down any Eagle who dared to put a finger on the ball.

The most successful teams in the school are back.

Of course, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squads are not quite the same teams as a year ago, when they combined to go 29-12 and sweep 1A Olympic League titles.

Graduation and attrition have shuffled the rosters, but the same spirit remains.

As they opened a new season Wednesday against Island rival South Whidbey, travelin’ photo man John Fisken was on hand to document the on-and-off-court doings.

Kyla Briscoe (John Fisken photo)

Kyla Briscoe was a hitting machine Tuesday night. (John Fisken photo)

This one counted.

After two “non-conference” matches against league foes (still confusing…), the Coupeville High School volleyball squad officially kicked off 1A Olympic League play Tuesday night.

They might want a do-over, however.

Despite noticeably improving as the match played out, the Wolves fell 25-17, 25-20, 27-25 to visiting Klahowya, dropping their record to 2-7 overall, 0-1 in league play.

Chimacum swept Port Townsend in straight sets in the other league opener Tuesday, so, for the moment, Coupeville is in the basement with the RedHawks.

That could change quickly, however, as the Wolves get a chance for redemption Thursday, when they pop over to the mainland to face Chimacum.

In one of those two “non-counting” match-ups against league foes, Coupeville savaged the Cowboys in the first two sets, before inexplicably falling apart and dropping the final three sets and the match.

The sometimes schizophrenic nature shown by a young Wolf team was on full display again Tuesday.

When they were clicking, they knocked the Eagles on their heels. And, when they weren’t, their mistakes hurt far more than anything the visitors did.

The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, at first at least.

Kyla Briscoe delivered a crushing second-chance spike for a winner and Katrina McGranahan was electric, both at the service stripe and laying down slicing spikes.

Riding a service winner from Sydney Autio, the Wolves closed within 13-12, only to fall back as quickly as they had risen up.

A string of returns that went wide sent Coupeville tumbling into a hole, as the Eagle lead ballooned out to 24-15.

With their backs to the wall, the Wolves made things interesting with back-to-back winners off of McKenzie Bailey’s fingertips, as the senior stalked the net, claiming it as her own.

But it wasn’t enough, as Klahowya closed out the set with a spike that looked like it was flying out the door, but dove and caught the back line at the very last second.

The second set was virtually a replay of the first one, but a step closer.

Payton Aparicio ripped a winner that lopped off an Eagle arm or two as it zipped through, Tiffany Briscoe brought the thunder, Kyla Briscoe was a hitting machine and McGranahan pulled off a nifty two-in-one play.

Bouncing around with mad glee, the Wolf sophomore went high for a potential winner on a spike, then, when denied, immediately sprang back skyward to stuff Klahowya’s return in the face of a surprised Eagle.

Deciding to shake things up a bit, the two teams broke from the pattern in what would turn out to be the final set.

Coupeville roared out to an 8-1 lead on hot serving from Autio and Aparicio, with McGranahan once again pulling off a perfectly-timed stuff at the net.

Klahowya was not to be denied, however, fighting back to reclaim the lead at 17-16.

From that point on, the Wolves would never again be in the lead, though they did force five ties and stave off two match points before succumbing.

The fight left in Coupeville was evident, as both times it fought off match point, it did so by outright winning the point and not merely popping the ball up and hoping the visitors would commit an error.

The first time Hope Lodell came zipping in from the side, appearing almost as if by magic at the last second, to catch the ball on the very tip of one finger and perfectly plop it in for a winner.

On the next, Ally Roberts got elastic, reaching behind her head while airborne to snag the ball and deliver a knee-quaking spike.

Lauren Rose paced the Wolves at the service stripe, converting 92% of her serves, while also doling out six assists.

Valen Trujillo (11 digs), McGranahan (four kills, three blocks) and Kyla Briscoe (three kills) also lodged their names on the stat sheet.

She probably doesn’t want me to do this.

Tough.

Kyla Briscoe, a three-sport star at Coupeville High School who also happens to be one of the most genuinely sweet, kind-hearted, full of life people you’re ever likely to meet, celebrates a birthday today.

And, while she might like to slide under the radar and go unnoticed, it ain’t happenin’.

Kyla is too extraordinary of a young woman to not be recognized.

We can hail her for her athletic skills, which are vast and deep.

From the first moment Kyla stepped onto the CHS campus, she made an impact on the sporting scene.

She started for the Wolf varsity volleyball and softball squads as a mere freshman, and was a scrappy, defensive-minded hustler for a JV basketball team that went 9-0 in league play.

Now, as a sophomore, she’s right back at it, holding down a starting slot with the Wolf spikers, who are playing in the South Whidbey Invitational on her birthday.

But, like most people we celebrate around here, she is far, far more than just a mere athlete.

I have known Miss Briscoe for a good chunk of her young life, and seen her and older sister Tiffany grow into confident, smart, deeply caring young women.

Like all sisters, they go after each other from time to time, but both of them would drop-kick you through a door and over a fence if you dared to mess with their sibling.

Loyalty, both to their sister by blood and their sisters by choice (their teammates and friends) runs miles deep in the Briscoe clan.

Kyla can be shy from time to time, and I kinda get the feeling that the moments when she gets shoved into the spotlight, like this, are a bit of a pain in her rear.

Well, sometimes every one thinks so highly of you, that you have to endure for a bit.

And Kyla?

You are amazing. You are awesome. You are a bright, vivacious young woman who just happens to be chock full of talent, gumption and sunshine.

You are going to go far and accomplish much. I, like everyone who meets you, think the world of you.

Happy birthday, Miss Briscoe!! May your day shine as brightly as you do.
