La Conner High School’s JV volleyball program hasn’t lost a league match in two decades-plus.

Yes, you read that right.

So, it comes as little surprise that the Braves came out on top Wednesday night in a battle of teams previously unbeaten in Northwest 2B/1B League action.

But, while La Conner’s second squad held off visiting Coupeville 25-17, 25-23, 25-17, the young Wolves exited the gym with some joy in their collective step.

They’re getting closer, and they refuse to bow down easily.

“It went really well! I’m super proud of the girls and how great they played tonight,” said Coupeville coach Ashley Menges.

“They went in firing, which quickly brought the competitiveness and energy we needed.

“You could see the spark in their eyes when they realized they can compete and they can be the big dogs, which was the highlight of my night for sure.”

Mia Farris keeps her eyes on the prize.

Even with the loss, the Wolf JV has the best win/loss record of any fall sports team at CHS, sitting at 7-2 overall, 6-1 in NWL play.

La Conner’s JV is 7-1 overall, 7-0 in league, with its only loss a narrow 2-1 defeat to 2A Sehome.

Coupeville heads back to its own gym for a stretch of practices, with its next match a road trip to Orcas Island Oct. 12.

The rematch with La Conner will be on Whidbey Oct. 19, and it’s one Menges and her spikers are already thinking about.

“Everyone had a really great game, everyone was fired up, and we’re excited to compete with them in our gym soon.”

Wednesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 5 digs, 6 assists
Mia Farris — 3 kills, 1 ace
Gwen Gustafson — 4 kills, 5 digs, 1 ace
Jada Heaton — 1 kill
Issabel Johnson — 2 digs, 2 assists
Katie Marti — 5 kills, 4 assists, 2 aces

Two Murdy boys was two too many for La Conner to deal with.

With brothers Xavier and Alex combining to rain down three goals Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad knocked out La Conner 3-1 for a huge home turf victory.

Starting a stretch of three-straight games at Mickey Clark Field, the Wolves avenged an earlier-season overtime loss to the Braves, and emphatically ended La Conner’s five-game winning streak.

The victory, Coupeville’s second-straight, lifts it to 3-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, while dropping La Conner to 5-3.

“The team was great tonight, they really played for each other,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“This felt good after our last game with them, losing in the first overtime we’ve played,” he added.

“They’ve grown and learned and become friends and great teammates and understood tonight what happens when you play for yourself vs. the beauty that comes when you play for your team.”

Alex Murdy tallied two goals for the Wolves Tuesday, giving him three on the season, while Xavier Murdy beat the goalkeeper for the second time this campaign.

It was the fifth career score for X-Man.

“They were quality team goals, with great buildup play and aggressive finishing,” Wood said.

Coupeville put together a complete game, with “great leadership from the back line,” which consists of Jesse Wooten, Tony Garcia, Cameron Epp, and Andrew Williams.

Wolf goaltender Aidan Wilson was lights out as well.

“Awesome job. Challenged nicely three-four times, but held his ground and reacted well with solid game play and game management,” Wood said.

Aidan was singled out by the ref, the La Conner coach, and some players for being fantastic.”

Coupeville defends its home pitch twice more this week, hosting Mount Vernon Christian Thursday and Providence Classical Christian Saturday.

Those games kickoff at 6:00 and 3:00 PM, respectively.

They had us in the first half, not gonna lie.

But soccer is a two-half experience, and the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad dominated play after the break Thursday, scoring all its goals in a 3-1 win at La Conner.

The road victory lifts the Wolves back to .500, with the team now 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-3 overall.

It wasn’t that Coupeville didn’t have chances to blow the game open in the first half.

The Wolves controlled much of the action, but were continually thwarted by the oldest rule of soccer.

Just when things get interesting, always bet on a ref calling off-side.

Time and again, the Wolves had the advantage, and then a flag would pop up, often seemingly for no reason at all other than the ref needed a bicep workout.

One of the few times she was allowed to run unimpeded, CHS senior Audrianna Shaw came crashing down the left side of the field, narrowly missing pay-dirt when her shot slid wide at the last second.

On another play, Ayden Wyman and Shaw hooked up with Sophie Martin on a dazzling series of quick passes, but Martin’s shot on goal crested over the bar.

Stuck in a scoreless tie with mere seconds to play in the first half, La Conner shocked just about everyone when a long shot kept on rolling all the way into the back of the net.

Trailing 1-0 at the half despite having outplayed their hosts, the Wolves quickly found their scoring groove after the break.

And I mean really quickly.

Wyman, the lone freshman on the team, beat the La Conner goalie 15 seconds into the second half, taking a ball from Shaw and slamming it into the net for her first high school score.

With the game knotted at 1-1, the intensity on (and off) the field kicked up six or seven notches.

While the La Conner student section couldn’t be seen on the video stream, it could be heard, and the Braves brought some nice noise in support of their team.

“You all need to come to every game, oh my God!” was the sentiment picked up by a live mic in the vicinity.

But if the La Conner faithful was loud ‘n proud, the Wolf booters soon took some of the wind out of their sails.

Shaw busted loose on the right side and turned a Carolyn Lhamon set-up into a tie-breaking score, rattling home her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Then it was Lhamon’s turn to make the scoreboard pop, as she unleashed a laser from the left on a corner kick.

The ball bounced around a bit, then splashed home, likely as an own goal, since it seemed to go off of a La Conner player.

Here at Coupeville Sports we’re biased, however, and plan to give Lhamon credit for her first goal of the season, and second of her prep career.

It’s just how we roll.

From that point on, the Wolves kept coming, with Ava Mitten and Katelin McCormick both coming inches away from adding goals.

It wasn’t to be, though, as the ref, realizing he had stopped calling off-side penalties and allowed the fans to enjoy the game, reverted to form and waved off a late CHS goal.

Still, Coupeville exited with a strong win, a testament to taking advantage of its scoring opportunities, and some nicely-bruising work by rough ‘n ready defenders like Nezi Keiper, McCormick, and Mary Milnes.

Nezi Keiper and Co. were in lock-down mode on defense.

La Conner honors Indigenous children:

Braves players wore bright orange socks while playing, as a way of honoring Indigenous children — both those who died, and those who survived — while in the Residential Boarding School system.

The La Conner school district, which has a sizable number of Native American students, and is closely connected with the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, marked “Orange Shirt Day” Thursday.

Honoring the slogan “Every Child Matters,” it is “an affirmation of our commitment to raising awareness of the Residential School experience throughout Canada and the U.S.

“The legacy of Residential Schools is something that has a significant impact on all tribal communities across Canada and the U.S.”

The soccer gods give, and the soccer gods take away.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad benefited from a timely call in their favor during a win against Grace Academy earlier in the season.

Tuesday night, during a rain storm in La Conner, that crunch-time call went against the Wolves, contributing to a nail-biter 3-2 loss in overtime against the Braves.

But while Coupeville lost the Northwest 2B/1B League battle, falling to 1-4 on the season, coach Robert Wood came away pleased with the continued growth of his young team.

“Amazing game, amazing effort. I thought we had that one,” he said.

“Kids are doing well – really played well in a strong and physical match on both sides,” Wood added.

CHS sophomore Nick Guay was the man with the golden leg this time out, earning a “brace” by bashing home both of the Wolf goals.

That moves him to the top of the season scoring chart, and gives him three tallies thus far in his prep career.

“Just a relentless press on the keeper and (Nick) got the loose balls … bing … back of the net,” Wood said.

“But it’s the buildup that really counts,” he added.

“Great control passing, trust, movement, effort, and desire. Then Nick for the no-questions cleanup.”

Wood also praised the effort of goalie Aidan Wilson — “a pro keeper tonight, save after save” — as well as Andrew Williams, who “played his best soccer ever.”

Also earning kudos were midfielders Preston Epp and Xavier Murdy, who “each ran a marathon,” and forward Alex Murdy, who “was the bodyguard for our team.”

“Really, really good team effort tonight,” Wood said.

Coupeville returns to action this Friday, Oct. 1, when it travels to Marysville to face Grace Academy, a team it beat 2-1 the first time around.

Things remain in flux.

As the 2021-2022 school athletic year kicks into high gear, things are a lot better than they were a year ago.

Which doesn’t mean the pandemic has let loose of us yet.

Case in point, Coupeville’s trip to La Conner next Thursday, Sept. 23 to face the two-time defending 2B state volleyball champs has been erased from the schedule.

It’s due to “a COVID issue with La Conner,” and the schools plan to reschedule the game later in the season.

For games and matches still being played, there are several new tweaks to spectator rules by Coupeville’s Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

As of Friday, Sept. 17:

**Spectators are required to wear masks at ALL sports contests at La Conner High School, regardless or whether it’s an indoor or outdoor event.

**Spectators are NOT currently allowed to attend volleyball matches at Orcas Island High School, but can attend outdoor events, such as football, soccer, and cross country.

This applies only to home events for the Vikings, and not their road games.

Volleyball matches played at Orcas can be viewed on the Orcas Island Booster Club page on Facebook.

**The other five NWL schools — Coupeville, Mount Vernon Christian, Concrete, Darrington, and Friday Harbor — are currently operating under rules set down by the Washington State Department of Health.

Those rules require masks for all spectators at volleyball matches.

Spectators do NOT need to wear masks at outdoor events where there are less than 500 people in attendance.
