We don’t lose on our diamond!!

Can’t stop the winning.

Day two of Central Whidbey Little League play was a lot like day one, with the home town squad successfully defending its diamond.

Monday, both CWLL Minors softball and baseball knocked off North Whidbey teams, and Tuesday, it was time for the Majors baseball squad to get its moment in the spotlight.

Fueled by sharp pitching from Chase Anderson and Levi Pulliam and timely hitting from Landon Roberts, Central Whidbey nipped the South Whidbey Shockers 3-1.

CWLL fell behind 1-0 in the early going, then chipped its way back into the game thanks to “excellent base running.”

Central Whidbey benefited from being willing to get a little black and blue as well, with several players getting aboard thanks to being plunked by South Whidbey pitches.

Peyton Caveness, Jonny Porter and Roberts scored for CWLL, while Anderson and Pulliam were spot-on while working on the mound.

The duo combined to whiff seven batters, with Pulliam notching five of those K’s.

“All in all I am very proud of our young Majors team,” said Central coach Jon Roberts. “We knew we would be facing stiff competition after we took the South Whidbey Pope Tourney last spring as Minors.

“We were really excited to see how the boys reacted to much faster pitchers,” he added. “For the most part we did OK, but there is room to improve!”

After sweeping three games Saturday, Coupeville’s 4th/5th grade SWISH boys hoops squad brought the big trophy home.

“We are the champions … of the world!”

They went, they saw, they conquered.

Coupeville’s 4th/5th grade SWISH boys basketball squad swept three games Saturday en route to bringing home some nice hardware.

The Wolves entered the day seeded third in a six-team tourney, yet left Skagit County bearing the championship trophy after winning the 2018 D-Glacier Division Tournament.

To get to the podium, Coupeville knocked off the Sedro-Woolley Hoosiers 30-10 in the opening round, then upended two teams which had first-round byes.

After blasting Granite Falls 26-17 in the semifinals, the Wolves shocked top-seeded Sedro-Woolley Blue 23-21 to take the title.

“Our boys played till there was nothing left,” said Coupeville coach Jon Roberts. “Defense that shut down the top scorers from the other team and unselfish passing to create opportunities that helped us rise to the top.

“Hard work all year has paid off!,” he added. “So proud of these boys. What a great season.”

Central Whidbey goes hit crazy!!

They can’t be contained.

The only thing which stopped the Central Whidbey Little League Minors baseball squad from ringing up 100 runs Saturday in the opening game of the Henry Pope Memorial Tournament was a five-runs-per-inning rule.

Facing off with the defending tourney champs, CWLL rained down 16 hits, including three home-runs, en route to a 19-1 four-inning romp over the North Whidbey Mariners.

Central Whidbey, which sits at 13-0 on the season, returns to play Sunday at noon, facing host South Whidbey.

The double-elimination event, named in honor of the legendary former Falcon coach, runs June 3-12.

The hits started falling right away for CWLL, with four of its first five hitters lashing base-knocks, capped by a thunderous double off the bat of Jack Porter.

The big blows were still to come, though, as Landon Roberts launched a home-run in the second inning, followed by back-to-back moon shots from Levi Pulliam and Chase Anderson in the fourth.

Central Whidbey only went down on outs once, in the second inning, when it settled for four runs.

The other three innings, the sluggers exited once they hit the five-run cap, amassing just four (of a possible nine) outs across that time.

With the game well in hand, CWLL coach Jon Roberts divvied up time on the hill, using five pitchers to nab the win.

Anderson started, then was followed on the mound by Pulliam, Roberts, Porter (making his pitching debut) and Jordan Bradford.

Eight different Central Whidbey batters lashed hits, with Roberts and Pulliam recording three apiece.

Peyton Caveness, Mike Robinett, Porter and Bradford each had two.

Knock it out of the park!!

“Well, I’m not saying we can’t go to McDonald’s. I’m just saying we have to play the game first. Strikeouts, then fries. Kinda how that works…”

Meanwhile, in the stands, the mom who has to wash this uniform silently cries.

“Just leave me here. Go on, save yourself from the sand storm. I’ll … cough … be … cough … fine.”

“Run on ME, fool?!?!? Taste the swift vengeance of my arm!!”

“One order of the ol’ high, hard cheese, coming right up!”

“I feel good, I feel great, I just stepped on … home plate!!”

“Take my picture?!?!?!? Well, I am kind of shy and all … but OK, just this once.”

Everywhere you look, someone is smacking a ball around these days.

With Little League seasons rolling along, there are plenty of photo-snappin’ opportunities for wandering’ camera clicker John Fisken.

His latest stop? A game featuring Central Whidbey’s Minors baseball squad, a collection of rising stars with prairie superstar-ready last names like Messner and Roberts.

Runnin’ for the green!!

There was a lot of green, and a little huffing ‘n puffing, on the prairie Saturday.

The 4th annual Shamrock 5K, put on by the Central Whidbey Cooperative Preschool, sent runners out in droves, many of them wearing St. Patrick’s Day colors.

The photos above are a taste of what was happening, with the focus falling on the younger runners who opened things with a highly charged dash of their own.
