Wolf boys, Braves girls stay hot

The Wolf boys plan for greatness.

Everyone played.

After a couple of weeks dominated by games being cancelled by Covid protocols and weather, Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams got a full schedule in the books this past week.

Along the way, the Coupeville boys and La Conner girls asserted themselves as the top teams in the conference, fending off Mount Vernon Christian.

Now, the 1B league schools are flying towards the start of the postseason, while 2B schools Coupeville, Friday Harbor, and La Conner take a more leisurely route.

CHS still has two weeks left in the regular season before it hosts the district tourney, an event which could very likely feature both Wolf squads.

The coming week kicks off with the Coupeville girls hosting Sedro-Woolley Tuesday, Feb. 1 in a non-conference tilt, before both Wolf programs amble off to Friday Harbor Feb. 4.

Wolves pile up hoops wins

CHS girls basketball coaches survey the action.

It was an undefeated week.

Not a perfect week, as the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team had to postpone two of its four games.

But when the Wolves did take the floor, whether it was the boys or girls, both varsity squads KO’d every contender.

The CHS boys picked up four wins to stretch their unbeaten streak to 11 games, while the Wolf girls rebounded to drill Concrete and South Whidbey after waving off Darrington and Friday Harbor.

The week ahead is a little slower, with the boys set to travel to Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, Jan. 27, then trek to Granite Falls two days later.

The girls have just one game, and it’s a recent addition to the schedule — a journey up Island to play Oak Harbor next Saturday.

Rumble for hardwood excellence

Things are about to get much busier.

Or, at least that’s the hope.

Nothing is set in stone during the Age of Coronavirus, but, as of this moment, the Coupeville High School basketball teams are scheduled to play four times this coming week.

The Wolves travel to Darrington Tuesday, Jan. 18, then are home to face Friday Harbor and Concrete the next two nights.

The week gets its cap with non-conference tilts with next door neighbor South Whidbey Saturday, with the Wolf girls at home, and the boys traveling to Langley.

As we wait for a week jam-packed with hoops, a look at where the CHS varsity teams stand in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Hit pause, marinate in moment

The CHS girls are in a second-place tie heading into the holidays.

And now, a break.

The Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams reached the holiday shutdown in different fashion, but both are sitting pretty in the standings.

The Wolf boys had their final two games of 2021 — including a first-place battle with Mount Vernon Christian — postponed due to Covid concerns.

Meanwhile, the CHS girls did make it on to the court to play MVC, but also saw a non-conference duel with South Whidbey preempted.

All of the missing games are expected to be rescheduled.

Unless those contests land earlier on an altered schedule than expected, neither Wolf squad will be back on the floor in game action until Jan. 4.

For now, Coupeville can prep for 2022 knowing its boys are in first-place in the Northwest 2B/1B League, and its girls are just a game off of the same status.

Bring on the eggnog, and marinate in the moment.

Hoops mania sweeps the nation

The Wolf girls celebrate a big play.

Things are underway.

The 2021-2022 high school basketball season is officially kicked off, with Coupeville varsity teams winning three of their first four games.

The Wolf boys are 2-0 after toppling Oak Harbor and Forks in non-conference games, while the CHS girls are close behind at 1-1 after a win over Granite Falls, and a loss to Forks.

Week two brings the first Northwest 2B/1B League games, with both Coupeville teams hosting Darrington Friday, Dec. 10.

The Wolves then hit the road the next day for the long trip to Orcas Island.

As everyone settles into a new sports rhythm, our first look at win/loss records for all NWL teams, through games of Dec. 4.
