Road warriors, league leaders

Time to be road warriors.

Six of seven games for Coupeville High School fall sports teams will be played away from Whidbey Island this coming week.

In fact, the only Wolf team to enjoy home cooking will be volleyball, which hosts Concrete Tuesday, before travelling to Mount Vernon Christian Thursday.

Both Wolf soccer teams play two games away from Cow Town, with the girls at La Conner Tuesday and MVC Thursday.

The male booters travel to Grace Academy Tuesday, before island-hopping Thursday with a trip to Friday Harbor.

But the longest trek of the week belongs to CHS football, which ambles down to Leavenworth to face Cascade under Friday Night Lights.

And cross country? With no meets on the schedule next week, they don’t have to step on a bus once.

As the Wolves prep for a week of listening to the wheels go round and round, a look at standings through Oct. 9:

Coupeville High School fall sports teams are scheduled to play five times in front of their home fans this coming week, only hitting the road for three trips.

Wolf girls soccer defends the pitch at Mickey Clark Field twice, hosting Friday Harbor Tuesday and Crosspoint Academy Saturday.

It’s a split for CHS volleyball and boys soccer, which both start the week on the road, then end it at home.

The spikers travel to Friday Harbor Tuesday, before hosting South Whidbey Thursday, while the male booters travel to Cedar Park-Lynnwood Tuesday and host Mount Vernon Christian Saturday.

Coupeville’s harriers are the lone road-only team, participating in the Nike Hole in the Wall Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Lakewood High School.

Finally, we have Wolf football, which is playing this week on a Thursday, and not Friday, due to a ref shortage in the region.

The gridiron giants welcome Bellingham to town for a non-conference tilt.

Nothing’s gonna stop us now

It was quite the week.

The Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad pulled off one of the great comebacks in program history to topple Orcas Island in five nail-biting sets.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls soccer, football, and boys soccer all won as well, with the male booters stunning state title contender Friday Harbor and their female counterparts netting their first victory of the season.

The week ahead is fairly light, schedule-wise, but builds to a big finale with Homecoming.

That game is set for Friday, Sept. 30 and pits Coupeville and Friday Harbor in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

Cross country (Wednesday at Orcas), volleyball (Thursday at La Conner), and boys soccer (Tuesday at home against Orcas) also have just one event apiece, while girls soccer plays twice.

The female booters host Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, before travelling Thursday to La Conner.

Wolves hit their stride

They’re off to see the world.

Coupeville High School athletic teams will spend some time on buses and ferries this coming week, with seven of nine events on the road.

All five fall Wolf squads have at least one meet, match, or game away from Whidbey, with only volleyball and boys soccer getting to play in front of their home fans.

The CHS spikers have the busiest schedule, playing three times, with road matches Tuesday at Darrington and Saturday at Forks packaged around a home clash Thursday with Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, Wolf cross country is off to Orcas Wednesday and Shoreline Saturday for the King’s Invite, while football travels to La Conner for Friday Night Lights.

Rounding out things, the booters hit the pitch, with the boys team traveling to La Conner Tuesday before playing at home Friday against Friday Harbor.

Coupeville’s girls soccer squad is off until Saturday, when it treks out to Forks for a non-league clash.

Wolves reside atop the standings

It’s one title…

Hang three more plaques in the Coupeville High School gym.

The weather has been fairly lousy this spring, but Wolf sports teams have provided their own sunshine with their play.

CHS baseball, softball, and girls tennis all claimed Northwest 2B/1B League titles, with track and field narrowly missing out on making it a clean sweep.

The oval kings made up for that, however, as the boys track team captured a district crown Saturday.

As we look to the week ahead, the regular season is done, and postseason play is all the rage.

Coupeville girls tennis and track and field are at Bi-Districts Friday, May 20, travelling to Tumwater and Chehalis respectively.

Meanwhile, Wolf softball returns to the field — after 18 days off — with a winner-to-state, loser-out game May 21 in Centralia against a yet-to-be-named foe.

With the end of the school year fast approaching, and baseball already eliminated, a final look at NWL standings, through games of May 14:
