The first road trip is in the books.

Having opened the season with three consecutive games at home, Monday brought a new wrinkle to the lives of the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball players.

The Wolves clambered on the bus, endured a trek to the wilds of Granite Falls, and now head into the Thanksgiving break.

CMS will reemerge Dec. 3, when it travels to South Whidbey to kick off the back half of its eight-game schedule.

After that comes trips to Sultan (Dec. 5) and Lakewood (Dec. 9), before the home finale Dec. 16 against South Whidbey.

How Monday’s mission to Granite played out:

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top team snagged its first win of the campaign, polishing off the Tigers 33-26.

The Wolves rippled the nets from distance, drilling four three-balls to claim the victory.

Two of those bombs came off the fingertips of Trey Stewart, while Calvin Kappes and Chayse Van Velkinbergh each netted one of their own.

Overall, Stewart and Van Velkinburgh paced the Wolves, each netting nine points, with Diesel Eck powering through the paint for six.

Calvin Kappes (5) and Jonathan Kappes (4) rounded out the scoring attack, while Xander Beaman, Maverick Walling, River Simpson, Trenton Thule, and Kamden Ratcliff also saw floor time for the Wolves, who sit at 1-3 on the year.

Level 2:

A lower scoring affair, with Coupeville (0-4) coming up just short in an 18-11 defensive thriller.

Gracen Joiner knocked down a team-high four points, with Jacob Lujan (2), Darius Stewart (2), Cyrus Sparacio (2), and Cole Van Dyke (1) also scoring.

Colton Ashby, Xander Flowers, Liam Stoner, Mario Martinez, Jonah Meek, and Aiden Wheat rounded out the CMS roster on this day.

Ready to rumble.

Level 3:

Les Queen continued his torrid scoring pace, accounting for 11 of his team’s 13 points in a loss to Granite.

Kion Tellery banked in the Wolves (1-2) other bucket, with Oliver Miller, Carson Marley, Jack Bailey, Braxton Beshear, Stoner, and Talon Gamble also in uniform.

It’s a long trip, so might as well make some history while you’re out in the middle of nowhere.

Enduring a 252-mile round trip to Neah Bay Saturday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad got its money worth.

Facing off with a spiker powerhouse, the Wolves pulled out a 25-15, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20 victory — always guaranteed to make the trek home a sweeter one.

With the non-conference win, the 2024 squad gets to 12-0, continuing the best start in program history.

The Wolves also earned coach Cory Whitmore his 100th win at CHS.

Now in his ninth season at the school (or 8.5 if we count the pandemic chopping the 2020 campaign in half), the hardwood sage is trying to guide the Wolves to a third trip to state, and second in as many years.

With two matches left in the regular season — a trip to Orcas Island and Senior Night against Sultan — the goal, as always, is having his team play its best as the pressure mounts.

Picking apart Neah Bay, which is at the state tourney year in and year out, is a major positive.

“It was a good trip out to the peninsula and great to come home with a win against a tough team,” Whitmore said.

“Even in the set we dropped, the girls were playing well, looking focused – Neah Bay just found some gaps and we had to regroup.”

Whitmore praised his team’s approach at the service stripe, which carried over to the Wolves being aggressive on offense, with setter Katie Marti flicking pinpoint passes to her big hitters.

“We served tough and consistent, and then attacked really well,” Whitmore said.

Teagan (Calkins) led the way in kills, with Madison (McMillan) and Lyla (Stuurmans) putting together double-double efforts.

Mia (Farris) was one kill away from a double-double herself and so the girls made it tough for the Red Devils to figure us out.”

“100 wins. That’s three digits, son.”

As they traveled back from Neah Bay, his players were quick to show Whitmore social media posts about the 100th win.

For his part, the Wolf coach was quick to pass praise on to a wide variety of folks.

“So many people have poured their hearts into this program,” Whitmore said. “I’m so lucky to do it here in this community surrounded by such quality people.

“It is truly so special to get to this milestone with this particular group of amazing kids and their families.

“All the administration and support crew, the assistant coaches over the years, players past and present and just this entire community has made this experience incredible, and I look forward to more years of Coupeville volleyball.”

Sometimes you hit the road, and sometimes it hit you right back.

Starting a two-week tango with teams from the vaunted Central 2B League, the Coupeville High School football team made a 298-mile round trip Friday, enduring a 55-13 loss while at Adna.

The non-conference defeat drops the Wolves to 4-3 on the season, but they have a chance to get some fairly immediate revenge.

Adna’s league mate, Winlock, which sits at 0-6 on the season, is scheduled to come to Cow Town next Friday, Oct. 25 when CHS celebrates Senior Night.

That trip comes in at 324 miles round trip, give or take an extra kilometer here or there.

Friday’s road rumble stayed close for a few minutes, as the two teams exchanged early touchdowns, while both failed to convert on the PAT.

Wolf senior Jack Porter brought back a kick return for Coupeville’s opening score, notching his sixth TD of his swan song season.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, things slipped away after that, as Adna punched in the next six touchdowns, all on the ground.

The host Pirates built a 30-6 lead after one quarter of play, then stretched the advantage out to 42-6 heading to the halftime break.

Trailing 48-6 midway through the third quarter, Coupeville finally snapped Adna’s run, thanks to Chase Anderson taking a kickoff to the house.

It was the team-best tenth score for the junior quarterback, and he tacked on the PAT to round out his team’s scoring.

From there, though, the clock continued to skip along, Adna added a final score — this one off of a punt return in the fourth quarter — and things came to a close.

After dropping back-to-back games, Coupeville will look to get back on track against Winlock, which has been outscored 265-102.

Six days later, the Wolves will close the regular season on Halloween with a trip to Friday Harbor for a Northwest 2B/1B League game which will dictate playoff positioning for CHS.

They excel under fire.

Hours after rallying to beat Okanogan in five sets Friday to stay undefeated in regular season play, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad returned to the Eastern Washington courts for a state tourney-like experience.

Playing in a tournament hosted by Liberty of Spangle Saturday, the Wolves went 4-2 against high-grade competition.

CHS beat Davenport (2-1), Omak (2-1) and Warden twice (2-0 both times) while falling to Liberty (2-0) and Oakesdale (2-0).

The losses were “both matches we would like to have back,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore.

“But that would be part of the lesson learned: play to potential against every possible matchup.

“I think the girls are pretty excited about the experience overall and as we debriefed today in practice, I’m hoping we have a clear vision moving forward.”

One of many celebrations for the Wolves this season.

Coupeville (8-0 overall, 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play) travels to Mount Vernon Christian (6-4, 2-3) Tuesday, then hosts La Conner (6-4, 5-1) Thursday.

As they chase a league crown and set themselves up for postseason success, a chance to play in a high-caliber mid-season tourney offers great rewards.

“The tournament was a really productive experience for the team,” Whitmore said.

“The timing was great because it was into the season enough where you’ve found a bit of a rhythm and lineup(s), so you aren’t going from scratch, but also with enough of the season left that you can make adjustments and work on those lessons learned.

While the wins and losses Saturday don’t affect anyone’s overall record, the time on the floor was invaluable.

“We definitely learned some lessons,” Whitmore said.

“As a team, we pretty much agree upon most of the things that need work and so we will attack those goals as we push in this half of the season.

“We definitely got better at a few key areas for future growth and having played against a few teams we could potentially see down the road, that experience will pay dividends in the end.”

Tourney stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 26 digs, 1 assist
Teagan Calkins — 33 kills, 12 digs, 1 assist, 2.5 block assists, 10 aces
Mia Farris — 35 kills, 55 digs, 1 assist, 0.5 block assists, 4 aces
Jada Heaton — 4 kills, 6 digs, 1.5 block assists
Katie Marti — 3 kills, 28 digs, 126 assists, 1 block assist, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 23 kills, 39 digs, 1 assist, 4 aces
Lyla Stuurmans — 39 kills, 31 digs, 2 solo blocks, 2 block assists, 8 aces
Tenley Stuurmans — 11 digs, 2 assists

Leg one of their Eastern Washington road trip was a success.

Forced to rally for the first time this season, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad roared from behind Friday to topple Okanogan in five action-packed sets.

The 13-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-10 non-conference win, coming at Liberty High School in Spangle, lifts the Wolves to 8-0.

That’s the second-best start in program history, behind just the 2004 team which went 10-0 and was ranked #1 in the state polls.

And now the Wolves, who are one of just two undefeated teams left in 2B, get another major test Saturday.

They’ll put aside their won/loss record for a day and participate in the Liberty Tournament, featuring a killer’s row of teams in a state tourney-style setting.

“The girls are going to need to pull it together tomorrow, already having played a five-set match and find a way to stay focused and fresh throughout the long day tomorrow,” said CHS coach Cory Whitmore.

Friday’s win, coming against one of the toughest squads in 2B year in and year out, was a great start.

A Coupeville team which hadn’t dropped a set during regular season play, entering the day at 21-0, found itself in a hole and had to respond.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Taylor Brotemarkle keeps the offense hoppin’.

“The reverse sweep was fun to get,” Whitmore said. “Along with some great experience against a good team.

“I’m proud of our resiliency and how we kept improving as the match went on, even into the fifth set.”

Key was getting something positive from everyone on the floor.

“We passed really well to get Katie (Marti) into a good spot so we could set Lyla (Stuurmans) and Teagan (Calkins),” Whitmore said.

“All three went off for double-doubles and went to work tonight.

“But everyone played their role at critical times and put it together.”

Friday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 13 digs
Teagan Calkins — 14 kills, 11 digs, 1 block assist, 2 aces
Mia Farris — 9 kills, 20 digs, 1 assist, 1 ace
Jada Heaton — 5 kills, 1 dig, 1 block assist
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 11 digs, 46 assists, 2 block assists, 2 aces
Madison McMillan — 3 kills, 13 digs, 1 assist, 1 block assist
Lyla Stuurmans — 21 kills, 11 digs, 1 solo block, 3 block assists, 1 ace
Tenley Stuurmans — 8 digs
