The chase continues for Wolf track stars

Carly Burt made a move. Lyla Stuurmans, too.

The duo were the highest risers for the Coupeville High School track and field team, which has six athletes in the top 10 statewide rankings through May 13.

Based on her performance at the district meet, Burt jumps from 7th into a tie for 5th among all 2B female pole vaulters.

Meanwhile Stuurmans gets back into the top 10 in the 400, giving her two slots as she was already camped out among the best long jumpers.

And yet, in a quirk, the Wolf junior won’t get a chance to compete at state in that last event, as she finished third at districts, and only the top two advance.

Stuurmans did punch her ticket to Yakima in both the 400 and 800, however, which takes a little of the sting away.

With just one meet left, the aforementioned state championships, which go down May 23-25, here’s where Coupeville athletes currently sit in the top 10 rankings for 2B:

Track sending a pack to state

Welcome to our track. Now prepare to bow to us.

Throwing down under sunny skies Saturday on the prairie, the Coupeville High School track and field team dominated at the District 1/2 meet.

The Wolves swept both team titles on the 2B side of things, while racking up 13 wins and 22 PRs.

“Good day all around,” said CHS coach Bob Martin. “Coupeville athletes putting in the work.”

Along with their wins and PRs, the Wolves qualified 18 athletes for the state championships, which go down May 23-25 in Yakima.

Of those Wolves, three — Preston Epp, Carson Field, and Nick Guay — punched their tickets in three events.

Meanwhile, Lyla Stuurmans, Cael Wilson, Katie Marti, Reese Wilkinson, and Marquette Cunningham advance in two categories apiece.

The number of Wolves headed to Eisenhower High School for the big dance could actually go higher than 18.

To qualify for state, you had to finish in the top two Saturday, so third-place finishers are alternates, just waiting for a top-two rival to have to decline their bid.

For now, the Wolves will bask in the glow of a magnificent Saturday in the spotlight, then get back to practice as they prep for the year’s biggest meet.

Wolf sixpack sizzles in state rankings

The fantastic five has become the splendid six.

With her performance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships last week, Coupeville High School sophomore Carly Burt re-cracks the Top 10 statewide in the pole vault among female 2B athletes.

Meanwhile, Lyla Stuurmans got knocked back out in the 400, for the moment, but held her spot in the long jump.

That duo, along with four other CHS teammates, are among the best of the best with two meets left on the schedule.

Up first is the district meet this Saturday, May 11 in Coupeville. Then, if they qualify, state goes down in Yakima May 23-25.

CHS track hits first finish line

One thing is done, another about to begin.

The Coupeville High School track and field team reached the end of the regular season Saturday, competing at the Sunny and 70! Invitational at Lakewood High School.

Vying with 29 other schools, the Wolves won in an event in which they hadn’t previously competed — the steeplechase.

CHS unleashed nine boys and one girl in the event, in which athletes traverse a 2000-meter obstacle course full of barriers and water jumps.

Standing tall at the end was junior Lyla Stuurmans, as “The Franchise” beat her closest rival by 8+ seconds.

Now she and her teammates begin their postseason journey with an appearance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships next Wednesday, May 1 in Mount Vernon.

The district meet is May 11 in Coupeville, with state set for May 23-25 at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.

Wild weather, titanic throws

Survive and thrive.

That’s the goal at large track and field meets like Saturday’s Lil’ Norway Invitational at North Kitsap High School.

Call it a success then, as Coupeville, repping one of the smallest student bodies at the 20-team event, held its own, garnering a win in the girls’ discus and 12 PRs.

Wolf senior Reese Wilkinson brought home the title, emerging from a field of 33 throwers.

Not only did she set a PR, but she finished seven feet, six inches ahead of the #2 thrower.

Also having a strong day chucking things was junior Katie Marti, who earned third place finishes in both the javelin and the hammer throw.

She was making her debut in the latter event and was joined by fellow first-timers Erica McGrath and Mason Butler.

Lynden, a powerhouse at the 2A level, held off North Kitsap to claim both the girls and boys team titles, while the Wolf girls made a strong statement, finishing eighth.

As often happens during “spring” in Washington state, the day was full of weather twists and turns.

“Mother Nature never ceases to surprise us with what she has in store for us on our weekend invitationals,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“What started out as a beautiful sunny, warm day ended with gusty winds, light rain, no power and freezing cold athletes.

“Thank goodness those in charge of timing had a generator so the meet could continue.”

While many of the athletes in attendance hailed from large schools, the Wolves never flinched from the challenge.

“Our athletes held up nicely next to the bigger schools,” Bitting said. “There were a few who just missed out on the podium but regardless ran, threw and jumped well.”

Coupeville returns to action next week, with its final two regular season meets.

The Wolves are slated to travel to Lynden Thursday, then to Lakewood next Saturday, before veering off to start the postseason the week after.
