Coupeville girls’ track just put the rest of the state on notice.

The Wolves don’t have the depth to win dual meets, but the athletes they do have are coming for all your titles.

Displaying a burst of dominance Thursday at a four-team meet in Langley, Coupeville’s relay squad (Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt, Lauren Grove, Marisa Etzell) cruised to big wins in both of its races.

Along the way, they threw down times that match virtually any other school in 1A.

After their performance against South Whidbey, Granite Falls and Archbishop Thomas Murphy, the Wolves have the second-fastest 4 x 200 time in their class and the fourth-fastest in the 4 x 100.

Just for good measure, Stone added a third title, zipping past all comers in the 200.

On the boys side of things, sophomore Mitchell Carroll was the biggest star on the day, nipping teammate Connor Thompson to claim first in the triple jump.

Dear AP voters, this is Makana Stone. How could you not vote for her? (John Fisken photos)

Dear AP voters, this is Makana Stone. How could you not vote for her? (John Fisken photos)

Izzy

Izzy Severns, great person, good hoops player. All-State in soccer? Heck yes. In basketball that slot belonged to Stone.

The people who voted for the Associated Press All-State basketball teams are either blind, easily bribed or just morons.

I understand Coupeville is a small town, on an Island, and 99.2% of reporters and editors at the big city papers pay absolutely no attention to us.

Cause how else do you explain the fact Makana Stone, the slam-dunk MVP of the Olympic League, leader of a Wolf squad that went 9-0 in league play and won every game by 15+ points, was left off the AP’s list, while another player from the same league, is on there?

With all due respect to Klahowya’s Izzy Severns, who seems like a really nice young woman and was (arguably) the second best player in the league, huh?

Stone was the dominant player on the dominant team, and it wasn’t even close.

Coupeville went 15-7. Klahowya went 4-15.

Severns was a hustler, a scrapper and a decent scorer on a team that went nowhere.

Stone was the league’s transcendent player, doing anything and everything needed that night to fuel a team that rolled to a league title.

Coupeville’s JV, which also went 9-0 in league play, would have given the Wolf varsity more of a sustained challenge than Klahowya did.

Dominant on the boards, rejecting shots, making off with steals, able to change the flow of the game by herself (at one point she poured in 22 straight points for CHS) or work within a total team-orientated game, Stone was the whole package.

Now, Severns was, quite justifiably, a First Team All-State soccer player, where she helped lead the Eagles to a state title.

Did voters, many (if not all) of whom never saw a single game played by an Olympic League team, just vote for a name they recognized from the fall?

Cause, if they actually saw Stone play and still want to make an argument for voting in favor of one of her runner-ups, maybe it’s time to consider changing jobs.

Maybe try doing something that hires the legally blind.

Back up.

If you’re going to try and record Dalton Martin’s throws this season, you might want to get a little bit further out, as the Coupeville High School junior is starting to unleash his full power.

Nailing PRs in both the shot put and discus at a six-team meet at Kingston Thursday — he won the discus and finished second in the shot — Martin was the biggest Wolf star on the day.

He wasn’t the only winner, however, as the girls 4 x 200 relay team (Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt, Lauren Grove and Makana Stone) zipped to victory.

The same unit also finished second in the 4 x 100, while freshman Lauren Bayne finished second in the 1600.

Continuing his life-long trend of picking something up and immediately being a success at it, CHS junior Lathom Kelley hefted the javelin for the first time in competition, claiming second.

With their thin roster, the Wolves, reppin’ the smallest 1A school in the state, had little chance in the team competition, as 2A North Kitsap strolled to dual wins.

Kingston, also a 2A school, Coupeville’s 1A Olympic League rival, Port Townsend, and 1B Clallam Bay and Neah Bay rounded out the field.

Jump

This is exactly how they warm up every day. True story.

Track practice is not for running, it’s for goofing off with the cameraman.

On his way to snap pics at the CHS boys’ soccer game Wednesday, John Fisken stopped by the track oval and convinced some of the gathered Wolves to pose for him.

The pics above capture some of the most fleet-footed young men and women in Cow Town, doing what they do best … posing for photos.

Oh yeah, they’re pretty good at running too.

But, priorities please. Photos above all else. Always.

Lauren Bayne

Two meets into her freshman season, Lauren Bayne has already made an impact. (John Fisken photos)

Makana

The brief moment when (l to r) Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lathom Kelley are slow enough to be photographed.

Two state championships.

If the season ended now, two months early, that’s what the Coupeville High School girls’ track team would own.

The Wolves currently own the fastest time in both the 400 (Makana Stone) and 4 x 200 relay (Kirsten Pelroy, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt, Stone) among all 1A schools who have reported on athletic.net.

Of course, the season doesn’t end until May, so any mythical titles will have to wait, but CHS has come out of the gate strongly.

The Wolves currently sit in the Top 10 for 1A in seven different events:

GIRLS:

200 — Makana Stone (5th) 27.17

400 — Stone (1st) 1:01.09

4 x 100 — Marisa Etzell, Kirsten Pelroy, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt (2nd) 53.13

4 x 200 — Pelroy, Grove, Hurlburt, Stone (1st) 1:52.69

4 x 400 — Etzell, Pelroy, Stone, Lauren Bayne (5th) 4:31.31

BOYS:

200 — Lathom Kelley (4th) 23.83

4 x 100 — Jacob Smith, Jared Helmstadter, Dalton Martin, Kelley (8th) 46.87
