Play the weather.

Buffeted by wind on a damp prairie Thursday night, the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad adapted strongly, using the elements to its advantage during a 1-0 thriller over visiting Port Townsend.

The win lifts the Wolves to 5-2 in Olympic League play, 7-7 overall. That pulls them within a win of the program record for victories, set last season.

With two league clashes left next week, followed by at least one playoff game, CHS is in hot pursuit of at least two big accomplishments.

One is the wins record, while the other is the mark for most goals in a single season.

Thursday night’s score, which came off the foot of Mallory Kortuem, was the 40th the Wolves have put into the back of the net.

Last year’s Coupeville team tallied 47, which gives the current group a solid number to shoot at down the stretch.

The Wolves were playing with the wind behind them in the first half Thursday and took advantage, raining down shots on a beleaguered RedHawk goaltender.

“We were taking a lot of good shots that were narrowly missing,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson.

That changed when Kortuem unleashed a laser from distance, rattling home her second goal of her sophomore campaign.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Wolves faced a different weather outlook, with the brunt of the storm slamming straight into their faces.

Aided by a strong band of scrappy defenders, CHS net-minder Sarah Wright merely laughed at the wicked weather, “providing some excellent saves to maintain the victory.”

It was the second shutout recorded by the first-year goalie.

What have you done for me lately?

Track and field is a fickle world, and while Coupeville High School has athletes with Top 10 performances in eight different categories in 1A this spring, not all of those Wolves are guaranteed to be competing in two weeks at Districts.

For example, Jacob Martin has the 7th best performance in the long jump among all 1A boys, but it came back on Mar. 16 at the Island Jamboree.

A fourth-place finish at the Olympic League’s Sub-District meet Saturday, where he missed his PR by two feet, puts him, like several of his teammates, in a precarious position.

Only the top three finishers at Sub-Districts are guaranteed berths at Districts May 19-20 in Renton.

Fourth-place finishers, like Martin, have to wait until the Nisqually League holds its Sub-District meet next weekend.

After that, the #4 finisher in the OL will be compared to the #5 finisher from the NL, with the better time or place grabbing the 8th and final slot to Districts.

It would be cruel if Martin, or high jumper Cassidy Moody or the CHS girls 4 x 100 relay team, which dropped a baton at Sub-Districts, were denied a chance to go to Districts, but it’s possible.

High school track and field both honors those who excelled early in the season and then ignores your credentials and demands you produce at every step in the postseason to keep moving forward.

Which, in the end, is no different than say, an undefeated baseball team taking its first loss at state and being denied a championship.

We’ll see how track plays out in the next four weeks, but, for now, we stop to pay tribute to those who, postseason results or not, currently sit among the best that 1A has produced in 2017.

Mallory Kortuem is shooting for the stars.

As she prepares for her freshman year at Coupeville High School, she’s ready to make an impact, and fast.

Following in the footsteps of her athletic inspiration — former Wolf great Erin Rosenkranz Kortuem is aiming to soar in both of her sports.

She’ll kick off the year by joining the CHS girls’ soccer squad, with plans to run track in the spring when the school christens its new oval.

With both sports, Kortuem is ready to jump into the spotlight from day one.

“My goal for track is to get on the number one women’s 4 x 100 relay team freshman year,” she said. “One of my goals for soccer is to make varsity freshman year.”

While she enjoys both sports, it’s the pitch life, where she follows older brother Keegan, that enchants her.

“My favorite sport would be soccer because I have played since I was four years old,” Kortuem said. “And I really enjoy the challenge of contact sports.”

Her brother’s girlfriend, Rosenkranz, a rock for the Wolf soccer and track squads before graduating in 2015, is her biggest inspiration.

Erin is my role model for sports and school and generally how to be an awesome human being,” Kortuem said.

Away from sports, the Wolf frosh enjoys rock climbing, hiking with her family and dancing with friends.

Musically she bounces from pop to rap to Latin dance music, and movie-wise, teen comedy “The DUFF” is her favorite.

As she makes her run at soccer success this fall, Kortuem is eager to add to her already strong skill-set.

“My strengths are speed and aggressiveness,” she said. “I need to work on ball handling at speed.

“I am working on increasing my overall level of skill.”

And while she may still be young, don’t discount the size of her heart and her burning desire to blaze her own successful trail.

“I love the physical challenge,” Kortuem said. “I love being fit and strong and am a very competitive person.”
