New day, new challenge.

Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott will launch a new season of college sports in March, having made the softball roster at Medaille College in Buffalo, New York.

The former Coupeville High School Athlete of the Year, who is a freshman, played for the Mavericks volleyball program last fall.

Prescott started all 21 of Medaille’s volleyball matches, playing in all 70 sets.

She finished with 116 kills, 165 digs, 24 aces, 12 assists, three solo blocks, 11 block assists, and 148.5 points.

Now it’s back to the softball field to play a sport where she was a holy terror in high school.

A pitcher and shortstop for CHS, Prescott had a lethal bat, killer speed on the base paths, and a gun for an arm.

During her days playing for the Wolves, she helped lead the team to state as a sophomore, before capturing a 12-0 mark during a pandemic-altered senior season.

Prescott and Co. lost their junior campaign on the diamond when Washington state suspended spring sports during the early days of the pandemic.

At Medaille, the former Wolf is looking at a 40-game softball schedule with contests running between March 13 and April 30.

Coupeville High School grad Chelsea Prescott was featured prominently Wednesday when Medaille College celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

The former Wolf is a freshman at the New York school.

Prescott, a Female Athlete of the Year honoree at CHS, was a three-sport sensation for the Wolves, leading volleyball, basketball, and softball teams.

She and her teammates went to state in the first and third of those sports.

During her first season at Medaille, Prescott started all 21 of her team’s matches, playing in all 70 sets.

She finished with 116 kills, 165 digs, 24 aces, 12 assists, three solo blocks, 11 block assists, and 148.5 points.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which started in 1987, acknowledges “the accomplishments of female athletes, recognizes the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honors the progress and continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.”

Season one is in the books.

The Medaille College volleyball team’s win/loss record wasn’t quite what everyone might have hoped, but Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott knocked it out of the park.

The former Wolf capped her freshman season at the Buffalo, New York school Saturday, filling up the stat sheet in a heartbreaker of a five-set loss.

Medaille rallied from two sets down, then hit a roadblock in the fifth set, falling 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 15-9 on the road against the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 1-7 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, 4-17 overall.

Saturday’s match was a battle for 7th place in the nine-team conference.

The top six teams, led by league champ Penn State-Behrend, are now off to the playoffs.

Prescott racked up 10 kills, two aces, a solo block, eight digs, and 13 points of offense in the season finale.

She started all 21 of her team’s matches, and played in all 70 sets, finishing her frosh campaign with 116 kills, 165 digs, 24 aces, 12 assists, three solo blocks, 11 block assists, and 148.5 points.

Keep fighting, keep swinging for kills.

Medaille College volleyball and Chelsea Prescott, its Coupeville-raised star, didn’t have an easy task Tuesday, but the Mavericks proved to be reliably scrappy.

Facing the top team in the nine-school Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, Medaille eventually fell 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 to host Penn State Behrend, but not before pushing their rivals hard on their Senior Night.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 1-6 in league play, 4-16 overall, while PSB jumps to 7-0, 19-5.

Things should be easier next time out for Medaille, which closes the regular season Saturday, Oct. 30, at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (1-5, 2-19).

Tuesday night in Erie, Pennsylvania, Prescott racked up two kills, three digs, a block assist, and 2.5 points of offense.

Halle Bogas (10 kills), Haley Kennedy (18 assists), and Baylee Romano (12 digs) paced the Mavericks, while Kristin Reiland (nine kills, 12 digs) topped Penn State.

On the season, Prescott has started in all 20 matches, played all 65 sets, and recorded 106 kills, 157 digs, 22 aces, 12 assists, two solo blocks, 11 block assists, and 135.5 points.

This one stings a bit.

Medaille College volleyball frittered away three match points Saturday, eventually falling in a five-set thriller in its home finale.

Despite another stellar performance from Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott, the Mavericks were toppled 25-20, 13-25, 13-25, 31-29, 15-11 by visiting Mount Aloysius College.

The loss drops Medaille to 1-5 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, 4-15 overall.

Mount Aloysius improves to 3-3, 4-14.

After dropping the opening set, Medaille roared back to dominate the second and third frames, and held a 24-21 lead in the fourth.

Then, things slipped away from the Mavericks.

Even after being unable to close out the fourth set, Medaille had its chances in the final frame.

In the race to garner 15 points, the Mavericks led at 7-3 and 10-8, with the final tie at 11-11.

Starting and playing all five sets, Prescott hammered nine kills, doled out two assists, zipped four aces on her serve, recorded a block assist, and went low for a team-high 19 digs.

Her 13.5 points of offense was third-best on the day.

Prescott has played in all 62 of her team’s sets as a freshman, ringing up 104 kills, 154 digs, 22 aces, 12 assists, two solo blocks, 10 block assists, and 133 points.

Medaille wraps up the regular season with road trips to Penn State-Behrend Oct. 26 and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Oct. 30.
