If you listen carefully, you can already hear the squeak of shoes on hardwood.

The first day of practice for Coupeville High School basketball arrives Monday, Nov. 13, with games beginning about two weeks after that.

Today, as an appetizer, we have schedules for both the Wolf girls and boys programs.

With the caveat that schedules, for any sport, should always be written in pencil, and not pen — even if you plan on laminating them.

So onward, steadfast in the belief that winter weather or other assorted ills will not alter what CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith has put down on paper.

PS — ** means it’s a Northwest 2B/1B League clash.

PPS — If the opponent is a NWL rival, but there’s no **, the game is considered a non-league affair.

Coupeville High School coaches Bennett and Megan Richter await the arrival of the progeny. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Maybe this one I really will get to call “The Chosen One.”

When Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coach (and three-time CHS Female Athlete of the Year) Megan Smith wed Wolf football guru Bennett Richter, two empires united.

And now, unto to CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith, AKA “Pops,” shall be born another grandchild who will one day be a standout Coupeville athlete.

So it is written.

For those following along, news of an impending baby swept through Cow Town, and now, the answer to the question proffered by every Wolf athlete.

Shall it be a boy or shall it be a girl?

To the delight of most of the CHS girls’ basketball team, it shall be a girl.

God’s chosen sport rules in any season.

The end of the school year is just around the corner, but basketballs are bouncing in gyms even as temps heat up.

Coupeville High School girls’ hoops coach Megan Richter currently has a squad playing in a 14-team league run by Skagit County Parks and Recreation.

With two squads apiece from basketball hot spots like Lynden, Nooksack Valley and Burlington-Edison, the Wolves rep the smallest school by far.

But playing up will only benefit Richter’s young players.

“We have 10ish players playing; it varies daily,” she said with a laugh.

“It’s a tough league and we are playing with much bigger schools than us,” Richter added.

“We talked about how the important thing to focus on during summer is that we are improving and getting better, and not focus on the wins or losses – even though winning is nice.”

The league runs June 5-28, with Coupeville scheduled to play eight times.

Jada Heaton, a walkin’, talkin’ ray of sunshine for Coupeville athletics. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Every team needs a Jada Heaton.

The irrepressible, high-energy Coupeville sophomore brings joy, excitement, and 1000% support to all her athletic teams.

Whether she’s in the game, or bouncing on and off the bench, Heaton is the ultimate good-time teammate.

You can see that when you watch her in person, and you can see that in the photos above and below, where she appears three times.

And why not?

As long as Jada is having a good time, the Wolves are set.

Avery Parker, whose artwork kept Coupeville Sports in business during the pandemic, grows weary of all the autograph requests.

Wolf students and cheerleaders unleash the noise.

Madison McMillan (23) is ready to throw hands, while Heaton is ready to join her teammate if the floor needs to be rushed.

Megan Richter, calm and composed on the outside. On the inside, a raging cauldron of emotions. “Shoot the ball like I did when I was your age!!”

Starters (l to r) Lyla Stuurmans, Maddie Georges, Alita Blouin, Carolyn Lhamon, and Ryanne Knoblich await their intros.

Mia Farris keeps her eye on the target.

Jada, tries, and fails, to hide from her personal paparazzi. “All night long, it’s clickety-click-click-click. Is this what life is like for Beyonce??”
