Pop your shot, make your mark

Putting the ball in the hoop is the name of the game.

Strong defense sets you up to win, but you still have to score more points than the other team.

Plus, scoring is the easiest stat to track, which is why you so rarely see an article devoted to say, the leaders at taking charges.

So, as we head towards the final games of 2024, which will come this weekend in Eastern Washington for the Coupeville High School varsity hoops teams, a look at season-to-date scoring stats for all the Wolves.

Three-ball monsoon overpowers Wolf girls

It might not have been raining outside Friday night, but it was pouring inside.

Visiting Sultan dropped eight three-balls through the bottom of the net, including four in an explosive opening quarter, downing the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team 48-33.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves to 3-4 on the season, and now they’ll have a stretch of days off for the holidays.

After Christmas, the CHS varsity heads to Eastern Washington for a two-game road trip, playing games against Kittitas and Toledo Dec. 27-28 at Central Washington University.

Overall, Coupeville’s next four games are on the road, with the Wolves not playing in their own gym again until Jan. 10.

Friday’s rumble, played in front of an enthusiastic group of home fans, briefly belonged to CHS.

Mia Farris slapped home a rebound for the first two of her team-high 14 points, followed by Katie Marti rustling the net on a pair of successful free throws, and the hometown squad was up 4-3.

Then the bottom fell out.

Hitting back-to-back-to-back three balls, Sultan went on a scoreboard-exploding 16-0 run to blow the game open, while the Wolves went six-plus minutes without scoring.

And yet, there was still life in Coupeville.

Farris broke the drought with two free throws to end the first quarter, before the Wolves ripped off the first eight points of the second frame.

The buckets were often sensational, with Tenley Stuurmans dropping a perfect pass to a rampaging Farris for a layup and Madison McMillan drilling a supremely sweet jumper from the side.

Meanwhile, the Wolf defense was ramped up, with Farris picking off passes and Marti using her elbows to massage the Turks heads, and Sultan went scoreless for a solid six minutes.

The visitors did briefly surge back to life, netting a pair of three-balls in the final moments before halftime, but Coupeville was back within 25-19 at the break and feeling pretty good.

The good times did not continue for CHS, however, at least in the third quarter and the start of the fourth, as the team’s shooting touch largely evaporated.

Sultan continued to pepper the net from behind the three-point arc, eventually pulling ahead 46-26 midway through the fourth.

Coupeville stayed scrappy until the end, closing on a 7-2 run with Haylee Armstrong netting her team’s lone three-ball, the ball splashing home with a nice lil’ pop.

But that was it for the Wolves, as time ran out on any comeback hopes.

Farris had a season high with her 14 points, while McMillan and Armstrong both chipped in with five.

Marti (3), Jada Heaton (2), Tenley Stuurmans (2), Danica Strong (1), and Lyla Stuurmans (1) also tallied points, with Teagan Calkins bouncing off the floor in pursuit of loose balls and rebounds against a fairly physical Sultan team.

“It was a fun experience”

The most-successful season in Coupeville High School volleyball history ended Sunday with an explosion of joy.

Three Wolf seniors — Lyla Stuurmans, Katie Marti, and Mia Farris — played in the All-State game at Burlington-Edison High School, with their own coach, Cory Whitmore, calling the shots.

It was Coupeville’s deepest representation at the event, which makes sense.

The Wolves, who were undefeated to the final day of the season, went 18-2, won league and Bi-District titles and finished 4th at the state tourney.

Both the victories and the state finish were the best ever achieved by a CHS spiker team.

Sunday, Whitmore — with assistance from Cris Matochi — coached the Gray team in the 2B game, with his players joined by fellow spikers from schools such as Adna and Forks.

“It was a fun experience to be a part of, and I was honored to be asked,” Whitmore said.

The pride of 2B.

“Our team was full of outgoing personalities that blended well. Helps to have Coach Cris along to keep things especially fun.”

With a large collection of Wolf fans and family members making the trip to the mainland, the Wolf trio shined in the big spotlight.

“Both Katie and Mia did really well, and I know if Lyla had been feeling better, she would have done great as well!” Whitmore said.

“I’m proud of how they represented our program, and it was fun to see how many made the drive over in support.

“That was really special, and a testament of what this team has inspired this season.”

Coupeville always travels well.

Spikers sending pack to All-State

Cram the van.

Fresh off the most-successful season in program history, Coupeville High School volleyball will send four to the Senior All-State games.

The event goes down Sunday, Dec. 8 at Burlington-Edison High School.

The Wolves are sending veteran spikers Katie Marti, Mia Farris, and Lyla Stuurmans, as well as coach Cory Whitmore.

Coupeville’s standouts will join up with players from Adna, Forks, River View, and Okanogan to form Team Gray, which will play Team Purple in the 2B game.

Whitmore will square off with Marie Denny of Liberty (Spangle) in calling the shots.

There are four games, with 1B all-stars kicking things off at 10:30 AM.

The 2B clash is set for 12:30, with 1A/2A (2:30) and 3A/4A bouts (4:30) to follow.

Coupeville, which went 18-2, won league and bi-district crowns, and placed 4th at the state tourney, was undefeated until the final day of the season.

This continues a recent trend of sending Wolf spikers to the All-State games, with Grey Peabody, Maddie Georges, and Alita Blouin having played in recent years.

Mia the Magnificent earns big props

They noticed her.

Playing some of her best volleyball of the season over a 24-hour period last week, Coupeville High School spike sensation Mia Farris soared at the 2B state tourney.

The Wolf senior racked up 35 kills, 41 digs, eight service aces, a block assist, and a regular assist as CHS split four matches in Yakima and claimed a program-best 4th place trophy.

Now, “Mia the Magnificent” has been honored by being named to the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association All-State Tournament Team.

She’s one of nine players selected at the 2B level, joining rivals from Manson, Freeman, Adna, Liberty (Spangle), and Colfax.

Stella Petersen, an outside hitter who led Manson to a second-straight state title, toppling unbeaten Adna in the final, was the MVP.

Coupeville went 18-2 this season, was undefeated until the final day of the season, and captured league and bi-district titles while being led by a stellar pack of seniors including Farris.
