“When you have a combination of red hot Wolves and a bunch of young Cowboys you are gonna get some thunder and lightning!!!”

By the time the goals were done raining down Tuesday, all Coupeville High School girls’ soccer coach Troy Cowan could do was smile.

And sing his team’s praises.

Powered by Mia Littlejohn, who netted a hat trick then went one better, the Wolves obliterated visiting Chimacum 8-0 to claim sole possession of first-place in the 1A Olympic League.

While there’s still a long ways to go for Coupeville to upend two-time defending league champ Klahowya, for this day, at least, the Wolves (1-0-1 overall, 1-0 in league play) are top dogs.

Three of Mia Littlejohn’s four goals came in the first half, all unassisted.

She added a final score off a “stunning header” in the second half, set up by a “ferocious crossing pass” from senior captain Bree Daigneault.

With five goals in the first two games of the season, Mia Littlejohn is already halfway to little sister Kalia’s school single-season scoring record.

Mia was a one-woman wrecking crew, she was totally unstoppable and in the zone,” Cowan said. “She had to be butter tonight because she was on a roll.”

Kalia Littlejohn doesn’t intend to let the scoring title slip away easily, popping her first two scores of the year into the back of the net.

Kalia struggled mightily with her shot early in the match, but I kept telling her shooters shoot, so keep on ripping them in,” Cowan said. “Her perseverance finally paid off late in the match.”

Daigneault and freshman Avalon Renninger rounded out the scoring attack, each tallying their first goal of the season.

Bree played a career match; she was fantastic tonight, really her most complete match,” Cowan said. “Her biggest contributions came from her tenacity and on the field leadership!

“She just refused to be rattled and kept her team on point and focused; very proud of this amazing young woman.”

Avalon Renninger’s first high school goal, fittingly, was set up by older sister Sage.

Avalon is just such an unselfish player and wants to share too much sometimes,” Cowan said. “I told her tonight before the match started she would score her first career goal if she listened and followed my directions.

“She has so much potential because she has been prepared for this moment and having a left foot like a sledge hammer helps too,” he added. “Avalon and Sage work so well together and you can actually see the chemistry on the pitch.

“It’s really a thing of beauty when they are working in tandem, almost like synchronized swimmers!!!”

Coupeville dominated the game so completely senior goalie Lauren Grove failed to touch the ball in play once.

That led Cowan to gush over his defenders, who were clicking on all cylinders.

From Lindsey Roberts (“Her drive, commitment and just overall sense of responsibility to her team, school and community are off the charts”) to Lauren Bayne (“She is such an unbelievable athlete that can do so many different things on the field it’s scary”) to his freshman starters, praise was offered all.

Tia (Wurzrainer) and Mallory (Kortuem) are really the Wonder Twins from the super heroes,” Cowan said. “These two are peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese or whatever combination you like.

“They just complement each other so well, the fact they are freshman is what is really exciting,” he added. “The ceiling with these two is epic, I mean cathedral level.”

Fall sports is on the stage.

The start of school is still several days away, but Coupeville High School cracked the seal on the 2016-2017 sports year Thursday, sending its girls’ soccer squad to Oak Harbor for a four-team jamboree.

While there the Wolves beat 1A rival South Whidbey 1-0 and fell 3-0 to their 3A Wildcat hosts. Lake Stevens rounded out the quartet.

Poppin’ over from his Oak Harbor abode, wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken snapped the pics seen above.

Lauren Grove

The start of a new season brings a smile to Wolf goalie Lauren Grove’s face.

They can wander, but the beautiful game always calls them home.

As summer winds down, the Coupeville High School booters are back it, prepping for a new season and another run at Klahowya.

Coming off of back-to-back second-place finishes in the 1A Olympic League, the young ‘n hungry Wolves are eyeing the top prize this season.

To get there, they’ll have to put in work, which is why they were toiling away under the sunshine Wednesday, when wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken strolled by, camera in hand.

They took the heat and dished it back out.

Fleeing Whidbey Island during a hectic weekend when arts and crafts festivals, barbecues, hydroplane races and car shows clogged everything in sight, a group of Coupeville athletes took to the scorching-hot mainland.

Once there, the Wolves put in work at basketball and soccer tourneys, with several of them coming back home bearing championship glory.

Four young Coupeville hoopsters — Izzy Wells, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Ja’Kenya Hoskins and Audrianna Shaw — ended up in Arlington, playing in 90+ degree weather at an outdoor 3 v 3 showdown.

While they didn’t win any trophies, the Wolf stars of the future acquitted themselves nicely and earned their shaved ice treats.

“Those four are good athletes,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Girls played hard and gained valuable experience.”

Meanwhile, off in Bellingham, three Coupeville booters, playing on two separate teams, all won titles at the Phillips 66 Rimland Challenge.

CMS 8th grader Matthew Kelley and his Northwest United FC squad romped to four straight wins, outscoring their foes 14-3 en route to winning the BU15 COPA flight.

Kelley punched in a pair of goals and dealt out three assists as he added to his stash of soccer awards from a busy summer schedule.

Sisters Mia and Kalia Littlejohn, who will be a junior and sophomore at CHS respectively, were just as successful.

Rampaging across the turf, the duo helped spark Northwest United G’00 Black to a championship win in GU17-19.

They and their select teammates won four of five over the course of the weekend, avenging their lone loss in the championship tilt.

Northwest United nipped Blackhills FC in penalty kicks after battling to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.

Not content to rest.

Coming off of the program’s first trip to state in a decade, the core of the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad has been busy this summer.

From team camps to putting in work at open gyms, the Wolves, who return all but one player from last year’s 1A Olympic League champs, have taken advantage of the opportunities which abound in the off-season.

The latest excursion brought five CHS hoops stars — seniors Kailey Kellner and Tiffany Briscoe, juniors Mia Littlejohn and Kyla Briscoe and sophomore Kalia Littlejohn — to Seattle Wednesday.

Taking part in a shooting clinic at King’s High School, the Wolves were part of a group of 60+ basketball players in attendance.

Also on hand (to observe from the cheap seats) was CHS coach David King, who sent back the photo above and some video of a drill.
