Next girl up.

With three starters sidelined Thursday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team never missed a beat.

Instead, the Wolves got strong work from those who were able to be in uniform, and plowed right through host Mount Vernon Christian in straight sets.

The 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 win lifts Coupeville to 10-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-5 overall.

It marks the fifth time in six seasons CHS spiker coach Cory Whitmore has led his program to double-digit wins.

And, that one miss doesn’t really count, as Covid restricted the Wolves to just nine matches total last season.

Coupeville is now off to the postseason, with a trip to La Conner set for Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The Wolves open the District 1/2 tourney against Auburn Adventist Academy at 5 PM in a loser-out match.

Win, and Coupeville returns to the floor at 7:30 that night to play two-time defending 2B state champs La Conner for this year’s one golden ticket to the big dance.

Thursday night the Wolves kept their focus on the task at hand, closing the regular season with a bang.

“It was a fun night,” Whitmore said. “The girls brought a lot of energy and I was very happy with how they stepped up around some shuffling of positions and teams.

“We served very well with our locations being very precise.”

Freshman Katie Marti slid into the setter position, and “did a great job finding the hitters and looked very comfortable at the faster pace.”

That calmness and strong play carried over to other players, as well.

“Our back row players were so consistent tonight, making Katie’s job easier and then our middles had a phenomenal night with their efficiency,” Whitmore said.

Jill (Prince) and Olivia (Schaffeld) played very well, finding open court.

“They worked really well together and it was fun to watch them leave league play on such a positive form of execution.”

Thursday stats:

Alita Blouin — 13 digs, 5 aces
Taygin Jump — 5 digs, 3 aces
Ryanne Knoblich — 3 kills, 3 digs, 1 ace
Katie Marti
— 1 kill, 2 digs, 22 assists, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 4 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces
Jill Prince — 11 kills
Olivia Schaffeld
— 7 kills, 1 ace
Lucy Tenore — 4 kills

Freshman Madison McMillan set varsity career highs in kills, digs, and aces.

Gwen Gustafson filled up the stat sheet Thursday, as the Wolves drilled Mount Vernon Christian.

Rest is for the weak, not for the Wolves.

Playing Thursday with the minimum six players, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad did what it almost always does — win, and win convincingly.

Playing their season finale on the road at Mount Vernon Christian, the Wolf spikers polished off the Hurricanes 25-12, 25-10, 25-15.

The victory lifts Coupeville’s final record to 10-2 in Northwest 2B/1B league play, 12-3 overall.

Coming on the heels of a 6-3 mark during a pandemic-shortened campaign during the 2020-2021 school year, that leaves second-year Wolf JV coach Ashley Menges sporting an 18-6 mark.

The former CHS varsity volleyball star found herself alone on the bench Thursday, but she and her players adapted.

“It was a pretty slow game, but we worked through a lot, and the six girls I had got a lot of playing time,” Menges said.

Grey (Peabody) did a really great job tonight, playing some back row, but Jada (Heaton) really impressed (varsity coach Cory) Whitmore and I both tonight.

“Overall, we came out with a win on a weird way to end the season.”

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 16 assists, 3 aces
Mia Farris — 3 kills, 1 dig, 1 assist, 4 aces
Gwen Gustafson — 6 kills, 6 digs, 6 aces
Jada Heaton — 7 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist, 3 aces
Grey Peabody — 4 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces
Aby Wood — 2 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace

Camryn Clark and Coupeville High School soccer put together a strong performance Wednesday against the best team in the area. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

They slowed their roll.

Playing inspired defense Wednesday, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team stood toe-to-toe with the biggest baddie in the region, and rarely blinked.

Holding visiting Mount Vernon Christian to just a single goal for the first 50 minutes of the game, the Wolves made a huge statement as their season winds down.

While Coupeville eventually fell 4-0, with the Hurricanes lobbing in a pair of goals in the waning moments, it’s a huge improvement from the first two times the Wolves faced MVC.

They gave up 21 goals across those two earlier losses, but Wednesday held the Hurricanes to their third-fewest goals of the season.

Only 4A Mount Vernon and ritzy private school Cedar Park Christian have held MVC to a lower final tally as the Hurricanes have gone 10-1-1 overall, 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville sits at 2-5 in league play, 4-6 overall with a road game Oct. 26 at Friday Harbor left on the schedule.

There is also a contest against La Conner which was postponed, though the chances it will be rescheduled fade as the end of the regular season hurtles towards us.

Amaya Schaffeld and Co. close their season next week.

Wednesday’s game was originally supposed to be a road trip, but a lack of bus drivers changed it into a home affair, offering Coupeville fans one more chance to see their team in person.

The Wolves responded, pestering the Hurricanes, forcing them out of their carefully-calibrated routine, and, at least once, inadvertently drilling an MVC player in the face at point-blank range.

The Hurricanes popped in a goal in the game’s fifth minute off of a sweet example of note-perfect team play, as the lead girl drew the Wolf netminder towards her, then banked a flawless pass to a trailing teammate, who smacked the ball home.

But then Coupeville clamped down, holding MVC — a team which has outscored foes 86-4 this season — scoreless over the next 45 minutes of play.

The Hurricanes didn’t break their dry spell until the game’s 51st minute, when they buried a dagger into the right corner of the net.

Two more goals came late, with the final one — a long, booming shot which went up, up, and away, then suddenly dropped into the net over Wolf goalie Maylin Steele’s shoulder — was scored in stoppage time at the very end.

Coupeville mounted a handful of its own charges at the MVC net, but were thwarted by a stellar Hurricane defense and an alert goalie.

That left most of the Wolf highlights to come from defenders such as Mary Milnes, who lowered her shoulder and made her fervent fan section proud by rocking a would-be goal scorer with a crunch which the rival felt all the way to the back of her teeth.

The Great Bus Driver Shortage of 2021 is benefiting Coupeville fans this time around.

Wednesday’s girls soccer match between the Wolves and Mount Vernon Christian was supposed to be played off-Island, but now it’s coming to Whidbey.

That means all the Coupeville booters who just celebrated Senior Night will get an unexpected extra game at Mickey Clark Field.

Game time Wednesday is 4:00 PM.

Freshman Preston Epp played strongly Thursday as Coupeville and Mount Vernon Christian waged a classic battle. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

A loss on the scoreboard, a win in their hearts.

While they couldn’t get the tying goal across despite a frenzied late-game push Thursday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer players have nothing to hang their heads about.

Facing off with one of the best teams in the Northwest 2B/1B League in visiting Mount Vernon Christian, the still-developing Wolves pushed the Hurricanes hard in a 2-1 loss.

The game was a thriller, with fans from both schools screaming into the encroaching fog, and a chiller, as the two teams played a hard-nosed, physical, but not dirty affair.

Now, there was a moment or two when Coupeville PA announcer Ja’Kenya Hoskins came out of her chair, ready to drop fists to defend her boys down below.

Especially when Wolf freshman Preston Epp and his MVC counterpart tangled with elbows and other assorted body parts while frequently fighting for control of the ball down in front of the press box.

“No sir, I am not having it #9! Do not make me come down there!!,” blurted Hoskins, who then reverted to form as the friendliest person on the prairie, dissolving into giggles.

“I’ve never been so into a soccer game before!,” she added. “This is a good one!!”

It was a sentiment shared by Coupeville coach Robert Wood.

“Such a good game,” he said with a big smile. “Well played by both teams, and I’m really proud of our guys and how they played.”

With the loss, Coupeville drops to 3-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, snapping a two-game win streak, while MVC gets to 6-3.

The Hurricane program has always been a strong one, and Wood was pleased to see the growth in his Wolf squad, which lost 4-0 to MVC back in the season opener.

He credited players like Xavier Murdy, Miguel Puente, and Grant Steller for their hustle, their grit, and their leadership, while praising everyone on the field for their contributions.

Coupeville got on the board first, moments after Wolf goalie Aidan Wilson made a superb kick save on a shot.

Rumbling in front of the net, the ever-electric Alex Murdy torched the MVC netminder, slashing the ball past him in the game’s 13th minute.

It was the team-high fourth goal of the season for the younger of the Murdy boys, and it held up until the 27th minute.

Caught in a scramble of players, Wilson was partially blocked, allowing the Hurricanes to punch in a loose ball and knot things up at 1-1.

From there, the CHS defense clamped down, with Wilson making another nifty save, this one on a Mount Vernon header, and the teams headed into the break still stuck in a stalemate.

The second half was the story of one quick goal — MVC popped in the eventual game-winner a little over two minutes after play resumed — and then 37+ minutes of rough-and-tumble, back-and-forth scoreless action.

Coupeville had a couple of really good looks after halftime, with Xavier Murdy just missing on a free kick and Puente being thwarted on a breakaway by the goalie colliding with him mid-shot.

The game’s oddest moment, which drew a roar of joy from Hoskins in the booth, came when an MVC player was handed a yellow card by the lone ref on the scene.

It wasn’t for any of the many in-game collisions or jostling, however, but apparently for the Hurricane taunting by dropping and doing pushups after a play.

“Weird, man,” Wood said with a laugh, and then he vanished into the night, a coach pleased with how his team is growing closer, both on and off the field.

Wins are important, but growth tops all.
