They’re back.

Thanks to new courts being planned, then delayed, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team hadn’t played a home match since spring 2023.

That finally changed Tuesday, as surprisingly warm weather greeted the Wolves and visiting East Jefferson.

“The weather was beautiful — sunny, warm, and the perfect day for a home opener!” said CHS coach Starla Seal.

The match itself was a barn burner, as Coupeville swept the singles matches, while the visitors took the doubles bouts to claim the 3-2 win.

After opening with a pair of non-conference tilts against East Jefferson, which is a mashup of Chimacum and Port Townsend, the Wolves hit the road Friday for their Northwest 2B/1B League opener.

Coupeville will island hop over to Friday Harbor, for the first of four rumbles with their archrivals.

Tuesday’s match was highlighted by a three-set battle royal at #2 singles, with Coupeville ace Dahlia Miller pulling out the victory.

Dahlia did amazing!” Seal said. “She battled to a third set and just killed it in the third set!

“Great match to watch! Dahlia is a very focused player and we’re lucky to have her!”

Coupeville’s other win came courtesy fab frosh Tenley Stuurmans, who advanced to the state tourney as just an 8th grader, while the new-look doubles teams are finding their groove.

“I’m impressed at how dedicated they are working on all their skills and playing loads of matches,” Seal said.

Ember and Mila Light worked hard and played two matches, winning their second match against a JV team,” she added.

“This is Mila’s first match; the sisters worked well together and battled out each point.”

From top to bottom, the Wolf roster brought their best games as they officially debuted the new courts.

“All worked hard, and we are so proud of them!” Seal said.

The weather improved, and Coupeville High School’s new tennis courts got finished. (Timothy Stelling photos)

They’re done, and they’re beautiful.

Lousy weather slowed things down, but just in time for the end of the school year, Coupeville High School has its new tennis courts in place.

The four playing surfaces, paid for by the district’s capital projects fund, are located between the CHS gym and the school’s softball fields.

With improved spring weather, work on Coupeville High School’s new tennis courts is picking up speed.

Superintendent Steve King released an update Friday in which he predicted the courts should be “open for play sometime in June.”

With no available courts, the CHS girls’ tennis team is playing all of its matches on the road this season.

But, after being slowed down by cold weather, the increase in sunny days has helped the work move forward.

“Currently, most of the paving for the courts has been done,” King said.

“Over the next few weeks, they plan to paint and fence in the courts. They will also have to work on the landscaping around the area and seed grass around the perimeter.”

The new courts are being constructed next to the CHS gym, a hop and skip away from the old ones, which used to sit next to the school’s bus barn.

Along with the courts being finished, the dirt unearthed in the project, which has been sitting on the corner of Terry Road since last summer, is expected to depart in the next few months.

“We have also worked with contractors to create a plan to remove the large pile of dirt,” King said. “If things go according to plan, they will be taking care of this late summer or early fall.”

The construction of new tennis courts is part of the district’s capital improvement projects, which were approved by voters in February 2022.

If you were expecting to watch a home tennis match at Coupeville High School this spring, think again.

Work on the new courts next to the gym won’t be complete in time, so the Wolves will play all of their matches on the road.

The first day of practice is Feb. 26, with the opening match on what is currently a 10-bout schedule set for March 13.

That will be one of two rumbles with next-door neighbor South Whidbey, with other trips taking Coupeville’s netters to far-flung locales such as Friday Harbor, Granite Falls, and the wilds of Seattle.

The Wolves are entering a new era.

Not only will they have fresh courts (at some point), but new coaches Tim Stelling and Starla Seal replace Ken Stange, who retired after two decades at the helm of the CHS tennis programs.

Wolf netters are on the move.

After getting school board approval for the project Thursday, Coupeville High School will build new tennis courts this summer, financed by money from its capital projects fund.

That funding is completely separate from any money which is part of the district’s ongoing budget cuts.

The current home for aces and volleys is next to CHS, in front of the school’s bus barn.

The new location for Wolf tennis will be just west of the high school gym on SW Terry Road, next to the school’s softball field.

The move, which will cover literally a few blocks, will begin in the next few weeks, with the courts expected to be ready for use in the fall, said Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King.

Once tennis departs its current spot, the school will use the area to expand its bus facilities.

While CHS is moving its tennis courts, and getting brand new playing surfaces, the plan calls for the number of courts to remain at four.

FieldTurf USA Inc., in conjunction with Beynon Sports Surfaces, submitted a bid of $1,040,510 (plus tax) for the work, which the board approved as part of its consent agenda.
