Nicholas Streubel

He is potentially the best thing to ever happen to Coupeville Sports.

In the 20-month history of this blog, few, if any, local athletes have been as dependable a draw as Coupeville High School senior Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel.

If you print it, they will read it.

Football, basketball, track and field, doesn’t matter the sport. Folks love them some Streubel.

Capable of ripping through the line and shredding three would-be blockers or gently playing with one of his coach’s sons, lifting him high above his imposing frame so the little boy can shoot a basket, Nick remains the quiet, friendly young man he’s always been.

I remember when he was a (relatively) little guy, and it’s been an honor to help document his exploits as he grew into his nickname.

As he celebrates his 18th birthday today, I wish him the best. Cause he deserves nothing else, since he is the best.

Sylvia Hurlburt is hopping for joy over her team’s performance.

She’s not slowing down any time soon.

Coupeville High School sophomore Makana Stone is starting off her second track season the same way she did her first one — kickin’ butt and takin’ names.

Thursday, she and her teammates were in Sultan for a four-team meet and the swift one captured victories in all four of her events.

She cruised to first in the 100 and 200, then teamed with junior Marisa Etzell, fellow sophomore Sylvia Hurlburt and freshman Lauren Grove to capture both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay races.

On the boys side of the battle, Wolf senior Nick Streubel out-flung teammate Dalton Martin to claim the discus title, the only event win for Coupeville.

With a thin roster, the 1A Wolves finished fourth in both team competitions, behind 2A schools Lakewood, Archbishop Thomas Murphy and Sultan.

Sky

Skyler Lawrence claimed top-eight finishes in shot put, javelin and discus.

Coupeville’s best beat the big boys (and girls).

Competing at the Seattle Academy Relays in Shoreline Saturday (which, despite the title, included other events besides just relays), Wolf senior thrower Nick Streubel and sophomore sprinter Makana Stone each won an individual title.

Even better, they both set PR’s to do it.

Streubel launched the shot put 45 feet, nine and a half inches, almost an inch and a half further than his previous best, and a solid four inches ahead of his nearest competitor.

Stone cruised to a win in the 400 in 1:01.46, out-leaning the number two runner by more than a full second. Her fastest time in the event coming in to the meet was 62.11.

Coupeville’s best showing in the relay events — which the meet was named for — came in the girls’ 4 x 100, where the quarter of Sylvia Hurlburt, Lauren Grove, Nene Maxie and Marisa Etzell claimed second.

The meet drew eight boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams, with 3A Schorecrest taking both team titles. The Wolves, repping the smallest 1A school in the state, finished 3rd and 5th, respectively.

CHS track stars Makana Stone (left), Lathom Kelley (center) and Sylvia Hurlburt (sunglasses) will travel to every one of their meets in 2014. (Kristin Hurlburt photo)

The most dynamic athlete at Coupeville High School will NOT perform in front of home fans this spring.

Sophomore sprinter and relay ace Makana Stone, who smashed school records, placed at state and won her first 30+ races as a freshman, will spend the spring on the road.

She and fellow state meet veterans like Sylvia Hurlburt and Marisa Etzell will travel to every one of their 2014 track meets, as CHS, for the first time in memory, will not host a home meet.

The only time the Wolves will perform on Whidbey Island, in fact, is Thursday, March 20 when they kick off the season with an appearance at the Oak Harbor Jamboree (3:30 PM start).

After that, there’s trips to Sultan, Cedarcrest (twice) and Granite Falls, among other destinations, but no home meets and no trips to South Whidbey.

No reason has been given for the lack of a home meet.

Coupeville Middle School will host a home meet April 30, when King’s, Langley and Lopez Island will come to town.

But the lack of a home meet for the high school squad could derail one of the school’s traditions.

Does that mean that Senior Night for thrower Nick Streubel and others will take place on a bouncing school bus somewhere on the back roads of America as Coupeville completes its never-ending road trip?

Probably.

An extremely nice guy off the floor, Wolf senior Anthony Beregron is all business when he's rejecting shots on the court. (John Fisken photos)

Anthony Bergeron (John Fisken photos)

Nick Streubel, not exactly the shyest guy on the team.

Nick Streubel

They came from different backgrounds, but finished their high school hoops careers at the same place.

Nick Streubel was a football player first, last and always, an All-State lineman who nabbed a college football scholarship.

He played basketball to help his friends and grew into a force in the paint, a guy who crashed the boards but had a sweet touch on little inside shots.

Anthony Bergeron came late to organized ball, only playing the final two years of high school.

But he went from a raw work-in-progress as a junior to a high-flyin’ highlight show capable of filling the basket up big time as a senior.

Now, both of the Coupeville High School seniors bow out sharing the same honor, as the duo were were tabbed for Honorable Mention selection by league coaches when All-Cascade Conference voting was held Monday.

Bergeron twice topped 20 points in a game this year, scoring 23 in a win over Lakewood, while Streubel put the ever-lovin’ fear of God into any player that had to try and hold his ground against The Big Hurt.

Led by the duo, the Wolves improved in wins for the second straight season.
