The bus ride didn’t bother them.

Firing on all cylinders, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad shrugged off the 90-mile jaunt to Darrington Tuesday, crushing the Loggers in straight sets.

Winning 25-7, 25-11, 25-15, the young Wolves improve to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-1 overall, with a home match against Orcas Island Thursday next up on the schedule.

For third-year head coach Ashley Menges, the night was a long one, but also a very rewarding one.

“It was a very cohesive night, with everyone doing their job and just playing clean, which is usually our goal each game,” she said.

With star hitter Madison McMillan sitting out the third set so she’d be eligible to play up to three frames in the varsity contest, Menges shuffled her lineup in the finale and got the same great results.

“We switched some things around and even then, everyone just did their job and helped each other through the confusion,” Menges said.

“All in all, it was a solid game and a solid three sets, and I’m very happy to see that so early into the season.”

They’re battle-tested.

Bouncing back from a slow start Tuesday at Darrington, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team roared back to chop down the host Loggers.

Paced by 11 kills apiece from big-hitting sophomores Lyla Stuurmans and Mia Farris, the Wolves eventually won 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play and evens its season mark at 2-2.

Both Wolf losses were tense affairs with bigger 1A schools.

Tuesday’s victory was a milestone, marking the 100th match for coach Cory Whitmore at CHS.

Now in his seventh season at the helm of the Wolves, he’s led his team to a 68-32 mark, accounting for the second-best winning percentage of any CHS program between 2016 and 2022.

And it’s a nailbiter, with Wolf softball going 83-38 for a .686 mark under Kevin McGranahan, nipping volleyball’s .680.

Though, with 10 more matches on the schedule, plus potential playoff rumbles, the spikers could be on top by season’s end.

Tuesday night Whitmore’s focus, as always, was firmly locked in the moment.

“Definitely another test for us tonight, but one with us coming out on top,” he said.

After bouncing across the countryside in a bus for 90 miles, then sitting through the JV contest, the Wolves needed a bit of time to snap into gear.

“We came out flat in the first set, trading points,” Whitmore said. “We took care of the ball pretty well but just didn’t come out firing and they did.

“After dropping the first we then got going a bit, finishing rallies and forcing them into tough hitting situations,” he added.

“It was fun to see a couple players kick it into high gear to help spark us to the win.”

Whitmore praised senior setter Maddie Georges for “serving up tough strings of points to push our gaps,” while the young guns all chipped in with strong work.

Madison McMillan came off the bench to serve tough and confident,” he said. “After a bit of a slow start, Mia Farris got going with high hard hits sparking our wins in the third and fourth in particular.

Grey Peabody struggled a bit in the first and second but found her rhythm in the fourth, especially with some strong connections,” Whitmore added.

“I was proud to see Lyla Stuurmans remain consistent all night on the attack and she ended up tying for kills leader.”

Showing the grit to turn a bit of a nailbiter into a solid victory, especially deep on the road, should benefit the Wolves going forward.

“All-in-all, it was a team effort to get out of there with a win,” Whitmore said. “And we are happy to be back at home Thursday.”

Coupeville hosts Orcas Island, with varsity tipping at 3:30 PM, followed by the JV in the night’s finale.

Coupeville’s booters are headed home, with their next two games on their home turf. (Morgan White photo)

Some days the soccer gods are especially cruel.

For the Coupeville High School boys pitch squad, Tuesday was one of those days.

Playing with a short roster, the Wolves scrapped and fought with host La Conner, taking a scoreless game into overtime, only to be punched in the heart by a ref’s interpretation of the rule book.

Was it the right call? Possibly.

But it still hurts, and still helped send the Wolves to a 1-0 loss in a league contest.

With the narrow defeat, Coupeville slips to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, with its next two games at home.

Those contests, set for Sept. 23 and 27, come against two of the most-dangerous teams in the region, however, with Friday Harbor and Orcas Island up next on the schedule.

The latter of those teams is the defending 2B/1B state champ, while the former claimed 4th place at last year’s big dance.

Tuesday’s torrid tilt at La Conner’s Jack Whittaker Field came down to a penalty kick in the first extra period.

The Braves were awarded the one-on-one shot after the ref determined Coupeville’s goaltender had “interfered” with La Conner’s shooter, inadvertently or not.

“Controversial call indeed,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“The keeper got the foul on a 50/50 ball with their attacker, where only if you are well-versed in the laws of the game will you understand the call.”

While he would have preferred to take a victory to the bus for the jaunt back to Whidbey, Wood came away pleased with the effort given by his team, which was not at full force.

“Excellent play by everyone on our 13-man roster for this game,” he said. “It’ll be really good to have our full team one of these days.”

Coupeville gets another crack at La Conner before the regular season is done, with the Braves set to visit The Rock Oct. 25 as the Wolves celebrate Senior Night.

Wolf soccer coach Kyle Nelson tapes up Wynter Arndt as she prepares to defend her home pitch.

They’re off to see the world.

Coupeville High School athletic teams will spend some time on buses and ferries this coming week, with seven of nine events on the road.

All five fall Wolf squads have at least one meet, match, or game away from Whidbey, with only volleyball and boys soccer getting to play in front of their home fans.

The CHS spikers have the busiest schedule, playing three times, with road matches Tuesday at Darrington and Saturday at Forks packaged around a home clash Thursday with Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, Wolf cross country is off to Orcas Wednesday and Shoreline Saturday for the King’s Invite, while football travels to La Conner for Friday Night Lights.

Rounding out things, the booters hit the pitch, with the boys team traveling to La Conner Tuesday before playing at home Friday against Friday Harbor.

Coupeville’s girls soccer squad is off until Saturday, when it treks out to Forks for a non-league clash.

“Very pleased with the way we played today.”

Coupeville High School boys soccer coach Robert Wood put some extra emphasis on the first word in that statement after his team bamboozled visiting Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Saturday afternoon.

Kicking off the front end of a pitch doubleheader, with the Wolf girls playing in the nightcap against Ocosta, the CHS boys rolled to a 7-0 victory.

The win lifts Coupeville to 1-1 on the season, with both games coming against Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The Wolves hit the road early next week, traveling to La Conner Tuesday, Sept. 20, before hosting their next two games.

The first of those home tilts will be a Friday special, with kickoff at 4 PM and admission free.

Playing on their own field Saturday afternoon, the Wolves dominated from start to finish.

“Mixing up the formation and player positions does wonders,” Wood said. “Everyone executed the game plan as we talked about – quick deliberate passing with pace and accuracy.

“Off-ball movement to support the ball; three touches max before distribution; aggression and determination to get the ball first; confident defending as a team.”

Coupeville spread its scoring out, with four different players beating the CPC goaltender.

Cameron Epp opened the assault on the net, rifling home a penalty kick in the game’s 10th minute, and then then the rout was on.

Reiley Araceley, Alex Smith, and Preston Epp each scored twice to round out the offense, with all four players netting their first high school varsity goal on the same day.

With four more sharpshooters etching their names in the scorebooks, 67 Wolves have scored for the CHS boys soccer program, which began in 2004.
