Standings spring to life

It’s Darrington’s league. For the moment.

With spring sports action still kicking into gear, there have been only two games so far in which Northwest 2B/1B League teams squared off in a conference clash.

Both of those bouts, one on the baseball diamond and one on the softball field, went to the Loggers, who swept La Conner.

So, as we publish our first look at spring sports standings, everything is coming up roses for Darrington.

Now, there are still a lot of games left to play, so maybe don’t go to Vegas and bet the farm on the Loggers just yet.

Coupeville, for one, is scheduled to play its first NWL games this coming week, with baseball, softball, and girls tennis all set to start climbing up the standings ladder.

Baseball gets two league games, hosting La Conner Tuesday, then travelling to Concrete Friday.

Softball has a split, hosting La Conner Tuesday as well, before hitting the road for a non-conference game Saturday at South Whidbey.

Rounding out the CHS spring teams which keep win/loss records, the netters (weather permitting) have a non-league road trip to Oak Harbor Wednesday.

Wolf tennis then turns right back around and hosts Friday Harbor — the only other NWL team to play the sport — Thursday.

Wolf hoops stars get major props

Brad Sherman, who led the CHS boys to state for the first time since ’88, was named Coach of the Year by his peers.

Dominate the season, dominate the awards.

The Coupeville High School boys basketball team swept to a Northwest 2B/1B League title this winter, finishing 11-0 against conference rivals.

Now, the Wolves have been rewarded for their play, sweeping both MVP and Coach of the Year, in addition to seeing four other players earn honors.

Senior Xavier Murdy, who paced Coupeville in virtually every stat category, was picked by NWL coaches as the best player in the league for the 2021-2022 season.

His own mentor, Brad Sherman, who led CHS to a 16-2 record, a league title, a Bi-District crown, and a trip to state, earned Coach of the Year honors.

Wolf seniors Hawthorne Wolfe and Caleb Meyer were tabbed as First-Team All-League players, with junior Alex Murdy landing Second-Team status.

Sophomore Logan Downes, who came off the bench to become Coupeville’s #3 scorer this season, was an Honorable Mention selection.

Concrete softball cracks, crumbles

A crisp 15% of the schedule just vanished.

Concrete High School announced Thursday it would not be able to field a softball team this season, due to a lack of players.

That erases three games from Coupeville’s 20-game schedule.

The Lions and Wolves were slated to play a doubleheader in Concrete Mar. 25, before facing off for a single game Apr. 19 in Coupeville.

The loss of Concrete leaves five of seven Northwest 2B/1B League schools active on the softball field, with La Conner, Friday Harbor, Darrington, and Orcas Island joining Coupeville.

Mount Vernon Christian doesn’t play the sport.

 

UPDATE #1:

A non-conference home game against Meridian Apr. 20 has been added, bumping the Wolves back to 18 contests.

 

UPDATE #2:

A non-conference road game at Oak Harbor Apr. 22 has been added, bumping CHS back to 19 tilts.

Coupeville league rival wins state title

The 15th time was the sweetest.

After never finishing higher than fifth place in 14 previous trips to the state tournament, the Mount Vernon Christian girls basketball program achieved nirvana Saturday night.

Holding off Neah Bay 37-33 at the Spokane Arena, the Hurricanes captured the 1B state title.

It’s the third crown for teams from the Northwest 2B/1B League during the 2021-2022 school year.

In the fall, La Conner won the 2B volleyball title, while Orcas Island ruled 2B/1B boys soccer.

MVC, which handed Coupeville 55-24 and 43-23 losses in league play, finishes 23-3.

The Hurricanes knocked off Pomeroy, Naselle, Garfield-Palouse, and Neah Bay in the 16-team state tourney to claim the crown.

Getting the final victory was a bit of struggle, however, as MVC trailed by 11 points in the second half.

Still down four with less than four to go, the ‘Canes closed the season on an 8-0 run, with five different players scoring.

Kylee Russell, Allie Heino, Caitlin Vander Kooy, Emma Droog, and Hannah Van Hofwegen all chipped in to fuel the frantic final run.

The championship caps a postseason in which five NWL hoops teams made it to the state tourney.

On the boys side, Coupeville pushed Kalama and Lake Roosevelt hard in 2B tourney games in their first trip to the big dance in 34 years, while MVC and Orcas Island made the 1B draw.

The Hurricane boys beat Riverside Christian, before being eliminated by Lummi Nation.

Orcas lost to Wellpinit in its one state game.

The NWL team which was heavily favored to win a state title, the top-ranked La Conner girls, finished fourth after being upended by eventual champ Warden in the quarterfinals.

The Braves, who opened with a win over Chief Leschi, rebounded from their loss to beat Lake Roosevelt and Raymond.

Liberty (Spangle) won the 2B boys crown, joining Warden as champs, while the Cusick boys matched the MVC girls in bringing home the biggest hardware.

Keep pilin’ up the wins

Playoff fever grips the land.

The four 1B schools from the Northwest 2B/1B League are already deep into postseason play, while the 2B squads kick off games this coming week.

On the 1B side of things, both boys and girls teams from Concrete and Darrington have been eliminated, while their counterparts from Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island are still alive.

The 2B playoffs feature both boys and girls teams from Coupeville and La Conner, while Friday Harbor had their postseason dreams ended twice Saturday.

The Wolf girls kick things off Tuesday, Feb. 15 at home against Auburn Adventist.

A win there, and CHS advances to play La Conner two nights later.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville boys, sitting at 15-0, don’t play until the district title game Thursday, Feb. 17.
