Wolf booters snap La Conner hot streak

Two Murdy boys was two too many for La Conner to deal with.

With brothers Xavier and Alex combining to rain down three goals Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad knocked out La Conner 3-1 for a huge home turf victory.

Starting a stretch of three-straight games at Mickey Clark Field, the Wolves avenged an earlier-season overtime loss to the Braves, and emphatically ended La Conner’s five-game winning streak.

The victory, Coupeville’s second-straight, lifts it to 3-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, while dropping La Conner to 5-3.

“The team was great tonight, they really played for each other,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“This felt good after our last game with them, losing in the first overtime we’ve played,” he added.

“They’ve grown and learned and become friends and great teammates and understood tonight what happens when you play for yourself vs. the beauty that comes when you play for your team.”

Alex Murdy tallied two goals for the Wolves Tuesday, giving him three on the season, while Xavier Murdy beat the goalkeeper for the second time this campaign.

It was the fifth career score for X-Man.

“They were quality team goals, with great buildup play and aggressive finishing,” Wood said.

Coupeville put together a complete game, with “great leadership from the back line,” which consists of Jesse Wooten, Tony Garcia, Cameron Epp, and Andrew Williams.

Wolf goaltender Aidan Wilson was lights out as well.

“Awesome job. Challenged nicely three-four times, but held his ground and reacted well with solid game play and game management,” Wood said.

“Aidan was singled out by the ref, the La Conner coach, and some players for being fantastic.”

Coupeville defends its home pitch twice more this week, hosting Mount Vernon Christian Thursday and Providence Classical Christian Saturday.

Those games kickoff at 6:00 and 3:00 PM, respectively.

New month, new standings

Time for some home cooking.

After a week where more events were on the road than not, Coupeville High School’s fall sports teams will get the reverse this coming week.

Boys soccer has the sweetest deal, playing at home Tuesday (La Conner), Thursday (Mount Vernon Christian), and Saturday (Providence Classical Christian).

Wolf football is at home as well, hosting Meridian Saturday in a non-conference game, while both volleyball and girls soccer have mixed schedules.

The spikers play three days in a row, starting with a home contest Tuesday against Concrete.

After that comes back-to-back road trips Wednesday and Thursday, with La Conner and MVC the respective destinations.

Girls soccer starts with a trip to Mount Vernon Tuesday, to play the C-Team of a 4A school.

After that, the Wolf booters arrive back at Mickey Clark Field Thursday for a matchup with Northwest 2B/1B League big shot Mount Vernon Christian.

The lone team to not compete at home this coming week is cross country, which takes a bus to Lakewood Saturday for the annual Hole in the Wall Invite.

Booters lose road battle

This was one they wanted, and needed.

With just four of seven Northwest 2B/1B League schools playing girls soccer, every conference tilt is a big one for Coupeville.

So, Tuesday night’s 4-1 loss at Friday Harbor hurts, at least in the moment.

It drops Coupeville to 1-2 in league play, 2-3 overall, and slots them in third-place in the NWL, with six more conference rumbles to play.

Mount Vernon Christian (3-0, 6-1-1) is the dominant team, and La Conner (0-3, 0-3) — who the Wolves play Thursday — are the cellar dwellers.

That leaves CHS and Friday Harbor (2-1, 2-5) to vie for the #2 position.

Coupeville plays three games against each league foe, which means it still has plenty of time to make up ground as the season winds through October.

Overall, the Wolves have nine games still on the schedule, with non-conference bouts against 4A Mount Vernon’s C-Team, as well as Sultan and East Jefferson’s varsity squads, still ahead.

But it’s the remaining six league games, home-and-away affairs with MVC, Friday Harbor, and La Conner, which will matter the most.

Tuesday, Coupeville got its goal from senior Eryn Wood, who smacked home her second tally of the season, and fifth of her prep career.

Wolf spikers bounce back quickly

Right back in stride.

Less than 24 hours after stumbling against South Whidbey in a non-conference tilt, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team returned to its winning ways.

Getting big contributions from multiple players, the Wolves bounced host Friday Harbor 25-16, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18 to get to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville, which is 5-2 overall, sits alone atop the NWL standings, though that should change quickly.

Two-time defending state champ La Conner returned from a Covid-related shutdown Monday, and has raised its record to 3-0 in league, 4-0 overall.

The Braves are scheduled to play three more matches before hosting Coupeville Oct. 6.

The Wolves have six days off now, then welcome Concrete, a team it has already beat, to Whidbey Oct. 5.

Barring any colossal upsets, that means La Conner and Coupeville should both be 6-0 in NWL play heading into the first of their two match-ups this season.

But all of that was on the back burner Tuesday, as Coupeville was focused on finding a quick fix for its struggles against South Whidbey.

Mission accomplished.

“Good to get back on the court and bring home a win,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “We made some adjustments that seemed to do well for us.”

Getting her most substantial playing time of the season, hard-working junior Ryanne Knoblich shone brightly, collecting her first seven kills of the campaign, along with a season-high 13 digs.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to step up, as Lucy Tenore notched her first solo block of the season, Lyla Stuurmans unleashed her first ace, and Madison McMillan made her varsity debut.

The fourth freshman to play this year for Coupeville’s top team, she joins fellow 9th graders Stuurmans, Savina Wells, and Katie Marti in making an immediate impact.

“Ryanne stepped up and did really well for us playing six rotations,” Whitmore said.

“Madison, earning a varsity jersey, also collected her first varsity kill,” he added. “We are very proud of her progress, and readiness to be thrown in.”

“Amazing game, amazing effort”

The soccer gods give, and the soccer gods take away.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad benefited from a timely call in their favor during a win against Grace Academy earlier in the season.

Tuesday night, during a rain storm in La Conner, that crunch-time call went against the Wolves, contributing to a nail-biter 3-2 loss in overtime against the Braves.

But while Coupeville lost the Northwest 2B/1B League battle, falling to 1-4 on the season, coach Robert Wood came away pleased with the continued growth of his young team.

“Amazing game, amazing effort. I thought we had that one,” he said.

“Kids are doing well – really played well in a strong and physical match on both sides,” Wood added.

CHS sophomore Nick Guay was the man with the golden leg this time out, earning a “brace” by bashing home both of the Wolf goals.

That moves him to the top of the season scoring chart, and gives him three tallies thus far in his prep career.

“Just a relentless press on the keeper and (Nick) got the loose balls … bing … back of the net,” Wood said.

“But it’s the buildup that really counts,” he added.

“Great control passing, trust, movement, effort, and desire. Then Nick for the no-questions cleanup.”

Wood also praised the effort of goalie Aidan Wilson — “a pro keeper tonight, save after save” — as well as Andrew Williams, who “played his best soccer ever.”

Also earning kudos were midfielders Preston Epp and Xavier Murdy, who “each ran a marathon,” and forward Alex Murdy, who “was the bodyguard for our team.”

“Really, really good team effort tonight,” Wood said.

Coupeville returns to action this Friday, Oct. 1, when it travels to Marysville to face Grace Academy, a team it beat 2-1 the first time around.
