“They are in it to win it!”

Savina Wells celebrated her 15th birthday in appropriate fashion — as a winner.

The Coupeville High School freshman was one of 10 players to score Tuesday, as the Wolf varsity girls basketball team obliterated host Concrete 59-25.

The victory lifts CHS to 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-1 overall, heading into a big showdown at Mount Vernon Christian Friday night.

As the Wolves prep for the weekend — they also have a non-conference clash at South Whidbey Saturday — they sit a half-game off the lead in the NWL.

Defending champs La Conner are 4-0 in league action, 7-0 overall.

Tuesday’s road trip to the wilds of Concrete went off about as well as possible, with the Wolves popping the net from the word go.

Maddie Georges sank two shots from behind the three-point arc in the first quarter, part of an eight-point opening for the junior guard, while Ja’Kenya Hoskins controlled the paint.

Up 17-2 at the first break, Coupeville stretched the margin out to 31-7 by the half, then 50-16 heading into the final frame.

It was the sort of well-balanced, everybody-contributes effort CHS coach Megan Smith is thrilled to see.

“We have a solid team! They are in it to win it,” she said.

“And I am beyond impressed with all the strides I have seen them make so far,” Smith added. “It’s only up from here.”

Shaw and Lyla Stuurmans have had plenty to celebrate.

Georges paced the Wolves with a game-high 13, including a trio of three-balls, while Audrianna Shaw knocked down 12 in support.

Izzy Wells (8), Hoskins (6), Carolyn Lhamon (5), Nezi Keiper (4), Savina Wells (4), Gwen Gustafson (4), Abby Mulholland (2), and Lyla Stuurmans (1) also scored, with freshman Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

 

JV sidelined:

Concrete only has one team, so Coupeville’s younger stars had the night off.

Wolf boys runnin’, gunnin’, and winnin’

The victory express keeps rolling right along.

Throwing down 35 points during a game-busting second quarter Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys basketball squad continued its undefeated season.

Shredding host Concrete 73-22, the Wolves improve to 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-0 overall. That’s the best start for the program in 24 years.

The victory also put Coupeville alone atop the NWL standings, at least for a night.

The Wolves are a half game up on defending league champs Mount Vernon Christian, who put a 2-0 conference mark on the line Wednesday against Friday Harbor.

Coupeville travels to MVC Friday for the season’s biggest showdown to date.

The undefeated Wolves, coming to a town near you soon.

Tuesday, the Wolves seized control from the start, even with a little slower offensive start than has been the norm this season.

Up 18-5 at the first break, Coupeville poured it on in the second frame, outscoring the Lions 35-10 across an eight-minute stretch of excellence.

Fron there, the Wolves cruised in for the lopsided victory, triggering a running clock early in the third quarter, and getting their bench plenty of playing time.

That included giving sophomores Nick Guay and Zane Oldenstadt their varsity debuts, with Oldenstadt rolling hard to the hoop for his first bucket, set up by a zippy entry pass from Cole White.

Everyone on the floor contributed, from Alex Murdy bounding high to snag rebounds and slap home second-chance buckets, to Logan Martin makin’ the net bounce on his jumper.

Along with its win streak, Coupeville also has a stellar scoring streak going, having topped the 70-point barrier in all five games this season.

A quarter of the way through the regular season, the Wolves are averaging 72.4 a night, and Brad Sherman’s team is doing it with very-balanced scoring.

Tuesday was a perfect example, as Caleb Meyer, Hawthorne Wolfe, and Logan Downes topped the stat sheet with 10 points apiece, while Xavier Murdy and White both tossed in nine.

Martin (8), Grady Rickner (8), Alex Murdy (7), and Oldenstadt (2) rounded out the offensive assault, with Guay, Dominic Coffman, and Jonathan Valenzuela also seeing floor time.

It was a night for milestones all around, as well.

With his 10 points, Wolfe has 731 for his career, and passes hardwood legends Dan Nieder (729) and Steve Whitney (730) to move into 17th place on the all-time CHS boys scoring chart.

Meanwhile, Downes (102) and Alex Murdy (101) both cracked the 100-point club, and Oldenstadt became the 405th Coupeville boy to score in a varsity game.

 

No JV rumble:

Concrete only goes one team deep, so the Wolf young guns were idle on this night.

First place suits them

Livin’ large in the ritzy part of town.

That’s where the Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams are right now, with both the Wolf girls and boys sitting in first place in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

The teams are a combined 4-0 in conference action, and 7-1 overall heading into the final week of action in 2021.

Coupeville travels to Concrete Tuesday, Dec. 14, then meanders to Mount Vernon Christian Dec. 17.

Wrapping up the first part of the hoops season with non-conference showdowns against South Whidbey Dec. 18, the Wolf squads have a rare split.

Coupeville’s boys will be at home, while the girls make the epic journey to Langley.

After that, both teams will practice, but not play for a bit, as the holidays toss in a break.

Games don’t return until Jan. 4, with the majority of the season’s contests playing out in 2022.

Shaw scorches, Wolves roar

Top of the league.

That’s where the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team finds itself after pounding host Orcas Island 36-19 Saturday afternoon.

The team’s second Northwest 2B/1B League victory in less than 24 hours, it lifts the Wolves to 2-0 in conference play, 3-1 overall.

It also puts Coupeville in a tie with defending NWL champs La Conner (2-0, 5-0).

And last, but not least, it leaves first-year varsity head coach Megan Smith smiling from ear to ear.

“We played really well today,” she said. “Our defense was phenomenal!

“They worked so hard on it in practice this week, and it really showed today,” Smith added. “They are really coming together as a team, and that has been so fun to watch!”

Fresh off a home win against Darrington Friday, Coupeville came out on fire during its first road trip of the season.

Senior Audrianna Shaw, who went off for 20 points — best performance by a Wolf player, girl or boy, varsity or JV, this season — had the range early, and never relented.

Banging home the first of four three balls on the day, she poured in seven points in the game’s first eight minutes, sparking CHS to a 14-5 lead at the opening break.

From there, the Wolves steadily pulled away, pushing the margin to 23-7 at the half, and 34-15 by the end of the third quarter.

Shaw, who outscored Orcas by herself, played like her coach did back when she wore a CHS uniform — bringing the offensive heat on every play.

“Audri couldn’t miss today!,” Smith said. “She had a great game all around.”

Audrianna Shaw outscored Orcas 20-19 Saturday.

Shaw had plenty of help, as six of her nine teammates also lit up the scoreboard.

Abby Mulholland and Izzy Wells knocked down four points apiece to lead the support crew, while Savina Wells notched three.

Maddie Georges (2), Gwen Gustafson (2), and Carolyn Lhamon (1) rounded out the scoring, with Lyla Stuurmans, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

Coupeville has a busy week ahead, with three road games in a five-day stretch.

The Wolves have league tilts at Concrete (0-2, 1-2) Dec. 14 and Mount Vernon Christian (1-1, 3-1) Dec. 17, as well as a non-conference rumble at South Whidbey Dec. 18.

Then they’re off until Jan. 4, when La Conner travels to Whidbey.

Coupeville boys off to sizzlin’ start

Best start in 11 years.

You have to go back to the 2009-2010 season to find the last time a Coupeville High School varsity boys basketball team started 3-0.

That was the next to last of Randy King’s 20 years at the helm of the Wolf program, and it marked the third-straight season his teams accomplished the feat.

Jump forward to 2021, and the current CHS team, coached by one of King’s former stars — Brad Sherman — has matched the quick start of a 2009-2010 team which finished 16-5.

Win #3 this time around was a blowout, as Coupeville dismantled visiting Darrington 75-26 Friday in its Northwest 2B/1B League opener.

The Wolves will turn around and put that spiffy record (1-0 in conference play, 3-0 overall) on the line Saturday afternoon when they travel to Orcas Island.

The first road game for Coupeville this season, it will feature a Wolf squad which is just a single point away from having five players averaging double digit scoring.

Utilizing a smothering defense and an opportunistic offense, CHS has beaten Oak Harbor, Forks, and Darrington by embracing an attack by committee.

Anyone on the roster can kill you on a given night, or a given play.

That was reinforced Friday, as eight different Wolves scored in the opening quarter, en route to Coupeville claiming a 30-8 advantage.

The hometown squad buried five of its eight three-balls in the first eight minutes, with Hawthorne Wolfe and Caleb Meyer torching the nets twice apiece.

Darrington couldn’t win.

Sit back and the Wolves peppered the net from behind the arc.

Come out, though, and Coupeville’s speedier players slashed past the Loggers, leaving them spinning, clutching nothing but air as layups rained down.

Alex Murdy swooped under the hoop, then popped out to shred the defense, while Logan Downes carved Darrington up on a mad end-to-end rush which resulted in a three-point play the hard way.

It was a pattern which quickly repeated itself in the second frame, as this time seven Wolves shared the scoring load.

Pushing the lead all the way out to 53-14 by halftime, the only thing preventing CHS from making a run at 100 points was the presence of a running clock in the second half.

Grady Rickner put a punctuation mark on things with a resounding stuff on a Darrington shot, while both of Coupeville’s Logan’s — Downes and Martin — added late three-balls.

Grady Rickner played strongly on both ends of the floor for the Wolves.

Nine of 10 Wolves scored in the game, and Dominic Coffman — the one who didn’t — played strongly on defense, hauling in rebounds and flustering Darrington’s shooters.

Downes paced Coupeville with a game-high 14 points, and officially became the highest-scoring of Angie and Ralph’s sons.

Three games into his sophomore season, the sharp-shooting Logan has 90 career varsity points.

That pushes him ahead of graduated big brothers Hunter (89) and Sage (64), who made much of their fame on the defensive side of the ball.

Alex Murdy and Wolfe both popped for 12 points Friday, with Wolfe (708) now the 20th player in the 105-year history of CHS boys basketball to record 700 career points.

Meyer (8), Martin (7), Rickner (7), Jonathan Valenzuela (6), Xavier Murdy (5), and Cole White (4) also scored, with X-Man notching his 250th career point.

 

No JV action:

Darrington has no second team, so the Wolf JV remained in street clothes Friday night.
