The gridiron is alive with the sounds of fall.

Helmets hitting, water bottles squirting and paparazzi clicking.

As the Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League opened regular season play Saturday, John Fisken was in place, snapping away and capturing all the action.

The pics above, which come courtesy him, showcase a few of the Coupeville kids playing youth football while disguised in purple and gold.

“I know purple and gold are not really my colors. It is what it is.”

Coupeville’s football future is hard at work up in the big city.

With no youth football program of its own, the home of the Wolves sends its young gridiron warriors to Oak Harbor.

Nine Coupeville kids are currently suiting up in the Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League, spread across three divisions.

Future Wolves include:

Daylon Chapel  (Pee Wee Gold)
Joseph Cuaresma  (Pee Wee Gold)
Hunter Bronec  (Midget Purple)
Hurlee Bronec  (Midget Purple)

The league kicked off its season with a jamboree in Burlington-Edison Saturday, with regular play set to start this coming weekend.

Travelin’ photo whiz kid John Fisken hit the road to send back pics from the jamboree, including the two seen above.

Three teams went into Saturday with championship dreams and one survived.

Powered by Coupeville’s Logan Downes, the Oak Harbor Pee Wees football squad thumped Anacortes 21-0, while two other Wildcat teams featuring Wolves on their roster fell just short.

The Juniors, which get a healthy dose of offense from Matthew Kelley and timely blocking from Gavin St Onge, were knocked off by Stanwood, while the Seniors (led by Ty and Gabe Eck) also were bounced in the semifinals.

The Pee Wees will get a championship game rematch Saturday, Nov. 8, with the only team to beat them, Stanwood Red.

That squad nipped the ‘Cats 20-13 in October to snap Oak Harbor’s five game winning streak.
