Do I like ABBA?

I am a human being with working grey matter (at least a little bit…) so, of course, I do.

Plus, I also enjoy access to free photos, so keeping alive my tradition of sponging off of John Fisken for glossy pics, here’s a look at Oak Harbor High School’s ongoing production of Mamma Mia!

The school’s first musical in five years, it runs Feb. 16-18 and 23-25.

Former Wolves light up OHHS court

Former Coupeville High School hoops coach Scott Fox sports a new purple and gold ensemble while gracing the Oak Harbor bench.

Once were Wolves, now are Wildcats.

Oak Harbor High School kicked off a new basketball season Saturday with “A Night with the Cats,” featuring various OHHS teams squaring off on the hardwood.

On the girl’s side of things, two participants have a Coupeville connection.

Sweet-shooting Lauren Marrs, coming off a stellar season on the soccer pitch, torched the nets in Cow Town back in her middle school days.

A proficient scorer for the Wolves, she’s back to lofting jumpers and remains a fan favorite.

Also reappearing on the sidelines is former Coupeville coach Scott Fox, now sporting purple and gold clothes.

The longtime hoops swami worked with both male and female players during his time at CHS.

Fox started with the Wolf boys’ program, then led the school’s varsity girls through two seasons of play before stepping down to focus on health issues.

And thus concludes our brief detour into Wildcat territory, home to the school which issued me a high school diploma.

There will be no rivalry games between Oak Harbor and Coupeville during the 2022-2023 season.

Having been KO’d by the 2B Wolves last season in a boy’s game, the 3A Wildcats constructed a schedule without a rematch this season.

Island rivalry plays out on the pitch

It was a bit lopsided.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team scrapped and fought from the opening tap to the final whistle Tuesday but were eventually overwhelmed by their neighbors from the North.

By the time things were done, visiting Oak Harbor, a 3A school, had polished off the 2B Wolves to the tune of 9-0.

The non-conference loss, coming in its home opener, drops Coupeville to 0-2 on the season.

The Wolves get a chance to bounce right back however, with two more games this week.

CHS travels to University Prep Thursday, before hosting Ocosta Saturday.

The latter of those games is a 2 PM start at Mickey Clark Field.

Tuesday’s Island rivalry tilt was a scoreless affair for a good chunk of time, before Oak Harbor began to find and exploit the cracks in Coupeville’s defense, which spent much of the first half playing on its heels.

The Wildcats punched in the game’s first goal in the 10th minute, added two more in a seven-minute span, then blew things open with three scores in the final four minutes of the first half.

Coupeville was extremely limited in its scoring opportunities, making things easy-peasy for Oak Harbor goaltender (and former Wolf middle school star) Lauren Marrs.

The Wildcats tacked on three more goals in the second half, though Coupeville’s defenders, led by Nezi Keiper, continued to scrap for every loose ball.

While it’s tough for any 2B program to punch up three levels and face a 3A school, Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson was philosophical afterwards.

“It gave us a chance to go out and play, and get some solid playing time for our players, a lot of whom are fairly new,” he said.

“It helps us build.”

Wildcats (and friends) tee it up

Some tee shots, a few divots, and a whole lot of purple.

Whidbey Golf Club was hoppin’ Saturday, as Oak Harbor High School’s athletic department held its big fundraiser for the year.

The event drew a lot of Wildcats, a handful of Coupeville duffers, and wanderin’ photographer John Fisken, who kept his camera clickin’ all day.

CHS sluggers claim Island supremacy

The Wolves run Whidbey.

Pounding out 17 hits Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity softball team drilled host Oak Harbor 13-7, completing a three-game sweep of their Island rivals this season.

Take two wins over 1A South Whidbey, toss in the destruction of the 3A Wildcats, and the 2B Wolves are sitting sweet at 12-1 on the season.

Coupeville, which is 6-1 against schools from bigger classifications, carries an 11-game winning streak into a home game Saturday against 2A Lakewood.

First pitch is 1 PM, with JV following varsity.

Friday’s tilt in the big city gave the Wolves a chance to show resiliency, as they had to battle back late to claim the victory.

After leading all afternoon, Coupeville gave up four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and suddenly found itself down 5-4 with two frames left to play.

To which the Wolves said, “No worries,” and dropped the hammer.

CHS smacked five hits and eked out four walks in the top of the sixth, plating seven runs to turn a taut thriller into a runaway.

The base-knocks came from everywhere, with Gwen Gustafson leading off the inning with a double, then coming back around to smack a single later in the frame.

Gwen Gustafson, sliding in to second here, had a hot bat Friday.

Madison McMillan, Allie Lucero, and Teagan Calkins also collected hits in the inning, with Mia Farris, Melanie Navarro, Audrianna Shaw, and Calkins garnering free passes.

It was a big moment for Calkins, an 8th grader who collected her first varsity hit, and did it at a crucial moment.

While Oak Harbor got a single run back in both the sixth and seventh innings, Wolf hurler Izzy Wells closed out the game with a few snaps of her fastball-chucking wrist and the celebration was on.

The senior righty whiffed 11 ‘Cats across seven innings of work.

Coupeville opened the game by slapping a quick two runs on the board in the top of the first, before going three innings without a score.

Other than the third inning, the Wolves had runners aboard in every frame, but couldn’t break through again until the fifth, when they tapped home twice to stretch their lead to 4-1.
