Unleash the spiker within.

The Central Whidbey Volleyball Club is hosting an open gym this coming Tuesday, Dec. 5 to give girls ages 10-14 an idea of what they can expect if they play.

Parents are also invited to bring laptops with them if they would like help with getting their daughters registered.

Additional waivers for participation will also be available.

For any questions, reach out to the club at centralwhidbeyvc@gmail.com.

Masks in place, volleyball players have returned to the gym.

While there won’t be any games, in any sports, for at least a couple more months as the COVID-19 pandemic rolls on, Coupeville athletes are being allowed to participate in open gym-style practices.

Looking to get out of the house, wanderin’ photo man John Fisken swung by CHS to snap the pics seen above.

Basketball is lurking just around the corner.

Sure, there’s still a chunk of the fall sports season left to play, but, for some players, it’s never too early to plan ahead for hoops season.

Traveling photo man John Fisken was wandering around area gyms Tuesday (as he is known to do), and snapped these pics of CHS players taking advantage of an open gym to work on their games.

Basketball is always in season.

Coupeville High School players have four more chances to take part in open gyms this month, and, as Wolf girls’ coach David King points out, this is a great time for incoming freshman to start to make a name for themselves.

Turnouts on the girls’ side have been strong enough that they’ve been able to fully scrimmage five-on-five.

The remaining dates and times for July, as listed on the school district calendar:

GIRLS:

Mon-21 (4:30)
Wed-23 (4:30)
Tue-29 (4:30)
Thu-31 (4:30)

BOYS:

Tue-22 (4:00)
Thu-24 (4:00)

The spikes are already flying.

The start of a new high school volleyball season is more than two months away (Aug. 25 is the first official day of practice for Coupeville), but, if turnout at open gyms is an indication, volleyball fever is spreading throughout the town.

Wolf JV coach Amy King, who is running things while the school decides on a replacement for departed varsity coach Kirsty Croghan, welcomed 19 girls to the gym Tuesday night.

“It was an awesome turn out!!,” King said. “Almost as many we had for the season last year.”

It was a nice mix of players as well, with three recent alumni — Katie Kiel, Haley Sherman and Bessie Walstad — dropping by to help school the newbies.

And the newbies were there, as five incoming freshman were on scene, which is “almost unheard of.”

Led by Kyla Briscoe, who has been a vocal leader, Abby Parker, Hope Lodell, Kayla Rose and Lauren Rose got a chance to play with returning stars.

Among the returnees on hand were Hailey Hammer, Kacie Kiel, McKenzie Bailey, Miranda Engle, Sydney Autio, Monica Vidoni, Lauren Grove, Ally Roberts, Jae LeVine, Valen Trujillo and Tiffany Briscoe.

“It was a fun time,” King said. “And with how they were just playing around at open gym – once they start training and get serious about it, you’re going to have a lot of fun with write-ups next year!”
