They’re getting there.

Looking sharper and more aggressive with each match, a very young Coupeville High School volleyball squad is gunning for its first win of the season.

And, while it didn’t come Tuesday, with the Wolves falling in four sets at Mount Vernon Christian, they did make their best stand yet.

“They battled! I’m really proud of the progress that they’re making on the court,” said CHS coach Breanne Smedley. “The girls are playing together, taking care of their jobs, and doing a better job of siding-out without letting strings of points go by.

“What I was most impressed with was our aggressiveness,” she added. “We were swinging on game point rather than tipping or setting the ball over. We are working on this in practice and it is showing on the court.”

Coupeville fell 25-10, 26-28, 25-20, 25-18, with the non-conference loss dropping it to 0-3 on the still-young season.

The Wolves now have a long gap between matches, not returning to action until Friday, Sept. 25, when they host Orcas Island.

They have picked up two more home matches later in the season, however, which will expand their schedule to 14 matches, while giving them seven on their home floor.

In a move that may confuse some (me for sure), the new matches (Oct. 1 vs Chimacum and Oct. 8 vs. Port Townsend) are against 1A Olympic League rivals, but will be considered non-league matches.

When it comes time to decide playoff teams, seeding and tiebreakers, only the final six matches of the season — when Coupeville plays Klahowya, Port Townsend and Chimacum home-and-away — will count in the conference race.

And yes, there will be a test on that later.

Tuesday, playing a true non-league match against a true non-league team, the Wolves got major contributions across the board.

Sophomore Payton Aparicio delivered a breakout performance, tallying five kills, four digs, a block and a strong 2.09 passing average, while also going a crisp 10/10 at the service line.

Valen Trujillo added 10 digs, a 2.19 passing average and three service aces, while Tiffany Briscoe (five kills), Emma Smith (four kills, one solo block, one block assist) and Katrina McGranahan (four kills, four service aces, one block) all chipped in.

Lauren Rose paced Coupeville on serve, going a flawless 13/13.

Wolf coach Ken Stange jumps into the celebration.

They were the best all season, and nothing changed in the postseason.

Riding a one-two finish from singles players Jacki Ginnings and Valen Trujillo, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad swept to a team title Tuesday at the 1A Olympic League tourney.

The Wolf duo now advance to districts, which will be held at Charles Wright Academy May 20.

Only the winner from what will be a super-tough districts draw chock full of private school players advances to state this year.

“We will travel and we will fight,” said CHS coach Ken Stange.

Powered by Ginnings and Trujillo, Coupeville outpaced Klahowya 10-5 to capture the league team title. Chimacum (3) and Port Townsend (2) rounded out the field.

Klahowya and Chimacum each sent a doubles team on to districts, with the Wolves narrowly missing out on a spot.

Freshmen Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger took third, while Micky LeVine and Sydney Autio placed fourth.

Complete results:

Singles:

Round One (single elimination)

Jacki Ginnings beat Makenzie Richey (Chim) 8-0
Valen Trujillo beat Sydney Jackson (Kla) 8-3
McKenzie Bailey lost to Laura De Michelli (PT) 8-3

Semifinals:

Ginnings beat Montano (Kla) 8-2
Trujillo beat De Michelli (PT) 8-4

Championship:

Ginnings beat Trujillo 8-4

“While we played well in doubles, we shined in singles, as we have all season long,” Stange said. “McKenzie nearly upended De Michelli. Jacki and Valen were on point.

Valen had a bit of trouble in the opening round, playing against a soft hitter, but once she figured out how to generate her own pace, she was good to go,” he added. “Jacki rolled over everyone, until she met Valen in the final. She certainly had to earn her title.”

Doubles:

Round One (Single Elimination):

Payton Aparicio/Sage Renninger beat Amelia Breithaupt/Casi Rowland (PT) 8-2
Sydney Autio/Micky LeVine beat Sophia Kovaleskie/Hailey Sargent (Kla) 9-7
Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera lost to Sarah Allen/Ray Maki (Chim) 8-0

Semifinals:

Aparicio/Renninger lost to Shania Rose/Danielle Frederick (Kla) 8-1
Autio/LeVine lost to Allen/Maki (Chim) 8-2

Semifinal Loser Bracket:

Aparicio/Renninger beat Autio/LeVine 8-4

2nd/3rd Place:

Aparicio/Renninger lost to Allen/Maki (Chim) 8-2

“Chimacum and Klahowya each had a strong doubles team. They were pretty dominant, especially Shania Rose,” Stange said. “She was certainly the day’s hardest hitter.

“All three of our teams stood their ground but were unable to overcome the pair of duos from our rival schools. Next year…”

The tourney brought an end to the careers of LeVine and the Luvera twins.

“The three seniors gave a combined eleven years to CHS tennis,” Stange said. “I’m grateful for all they’ve done.

“Over the last four years, those three have accounted for many wins and even more great memories,” he added. “They’ve left a positive mark on CHS and its team.”

The best team in all the land.

After thrashing a depleted Friday Harbor squad Friday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team has a 5 1/2 match winning streak, the longest streak for any Wolf program this spring.

The 4-2 non-conference victory over the Wolverines lifted Coupeville to 6-3 overall, 2-0 in Olympic League play.

Technically, the streak is as five, though Coupeville was far ahead of Klahowya in a match postponed by rain.

The tail end of that match will be wrapped up next week, before the third and final show-down between the two schools.

The Wolves are scheduled to play three and a half matches next week, hosting Chimacum Tuesday, going to Friday Harbor Wednesday, then playing a match and a half at Klahowya Thursday.

They then wrap up the regular season, and, hopefully, a league title, with matches at Sequim (May 5) and Chimacum (May 7).

Friday, it was all about putting the Wolverines away early.

All four wins were quick affairs, while the only two losses came in matches that stretched out over three sets.

Freshmen phenoms Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger netted Player of the Match honors for a double-bagel win at first doubles.

“It’s difficult enough to win at that spot,” said CHS coach Ken Stange. “A blowout win always feels good.”

Coming off a spectacular showing at a weekend tourney, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad kicked off a four-match week Monday with a resounding 6-1 drilling of former league rival Lakewood.

The non-conference victory, coming against a bigger 2A school, was the third straight win for the Wolves and came even with one of the squad’s most successful players, Valen Trujillo, MIA.

Now 4-3 overall, Coupeville puts its 2-0 Olympic League record on the line this afternoon when it hosts Klahowya at 4 PM.

With Trujillo (a crisp 7-2 on the season) out for the day, Wolf coach Ken Stange juggled the lineup a bit, employing his usual magic touch to produce a winning outcome in which almost all the matches (save the usual suspect) ended quickly and decisively.

“It turned out that the other team was also short handed, and that put us back in the driver’s seat,” he said. “Today’s tennis was straight and to the point.

“Most of the matches ended quickly, which was a good thing. Most of the girls are still recovering from Saturday’s marathon of tennis!”
