Bailey Thule – a master of the camera arts. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The best in the biz is still in the biz.

Bailey Thule, who demonstrated a remarkable photographic eye during her time on the Coupeville High School Yearbook staff, is now wowing ’em at Wazzu.

The Washington State University freshman is a staff photographer with The Daily Evergreen, a student newspaper which has been humming along since 1895.

Bailey, who is a multimedia journalism and communications major, is embracing her new gig, having already produced four stories.

The car may be wrecked, but the cameraman driving it is A-OK. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Protect your camera clickin’ hand!

John Fisken, the hardest working sports photographer on Whidbey Island, is on a summer RV vacation with wife Diane — one which took an unexpected turn Friday.

Tooling through Walcott, Iowa in his car while the RV sat at a truck stop, the Diet Coke-lovin’ paparazzi met some locals in a violent manner.

As Fisken was driving into town, a car in the opposite lane was stopped to turn left after he passed.

Instead, the parked vehicle got belted from behind from another car, sending car #1 into the other lane, where it smashed into the owner of John’s Photos.

Hey, at least the little honeycomb survived!

All drivers came out of the accident seemingly OK, though the one who didn’t take note of a vehicle stopped in the road is likely looking at a well-deserved ticket.

Or a public caning. Not sure what the law is in Iowa.

Fisken’s car took the brunt of the damage.

“I fear it has suffered fatal injuries and will be going to car heaven,” he said.

But being able to walk away from the accident (and immediately shoot pics) is a blessing, and the couple plan to continue their trip across the backroads of America.

“I am fine, no neck, back or head pain of any kind,” John Fisken said. “We have another month to go on our trip and will soldier on.

“The car did its job and protected me well.”

Lauren Bayne (John Fisken photos)

Lauren Bayne, a young woman of many talents. (John Fisken photos)

Lauren Bayne is a bit of a Renaissance woman.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who celebrates a birthday today, is a whirlwind, always up to something, and always doing a pretty spectacular job at whatever she does.

On the soccer pitch she’s one of the hardest-working Wolves, a lock-down defender who helped anchor Coupeville’s often-stingy defense.

Put her on the track oval and there is little she can’t accomplish.

During her freshman season, Bayne Train, Jr. competed in eight different events, going all the way to districts in both the 3200 and high jump.

Once there she PR’d in the running event and just missed tying her best mark — which she had set while winning the event at sub-districts — while jumping.

When she’s not busy blazing a trail of athletic success, much like older brother Josh, Lauren can be seen snapping pics of fellow Wolf athletes.

Or working tirelessly behind the scenes at Booster Club events like the annual Crab Feed.

Or hanging out with her 10,000 friends.

Bayne is a bright, blazing ray of sunshine in Coupeville, and she comes off as smart, well-spoken, deeply caring to those she holds close and a young woman whose potential is limitless.

I always figure we should get in good with people like Lauren when they’re just starting, so that when she’s ruling the world, she might remember us benevolently.

So happy birthday, Miss Bayne.

I hope your cake day is a sweet one, but, then again, I hope all of your days are that way.

You make us better as a town for your presence, and I hope you always know how highly we all think of you.

Sylvia Hurlburt: Queen of the Universe

Sylvia Hurlburt: Queen of the Universe

Sylvia Hurlburt is better than you and me, but she probably won’t admit it.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates a birthday today, can pretty much do just about everything there is to do in this world, and do it all extremely well.

Dancer, tap and ballet and everything in between.

Speed demon track star.

Energizer Rabbit cheerleader with more pep than is humanly possible.

Intrepid photographer with an uncanny eye for detail.

The list goes on and on, and we’d be here all week (and maybe beyond) if we listed all her talents and accomplishments.

Not that she herself would take that time, because her greatest talent is this — Sylvia remains as easy-going, approachable, super-friendly and modest-about-her-own-awesomeness as any young woman you are likely to encounter.

If there’s an out of control ego raging away in there, she hides it really, really well.

So, it is up to us to frequently remind the world of how amazing Miss Hurlburt is on a daily basis.

To honor her for the way she dotes on her older brother, Larry, her parents, Kristin and Troy, and the trillions of friends she holds dear.

The way she brightens the world every time she steps out into it, a walkin’, talkin’ burst of happy radiance.

There is no artifice to Sylvia.

She is the real deal, a genuinely sweet, caring, smart as all get out superstar blazing a bright, burning trail across the universe on a daily basis.

She is going places, on her way to doing great things.

That we get to share a slice of her life, to witness her growth, is a treat.

May this day, and every day, be full of joy for her. Perfect karmic payback for a life lived well.
